  1. I am the same way. Last year, I returned to a city where I had worked previously for a working weekend. I wanted to go to everyone of my favorite restaurants and had seven meals in 2 days. Even though my boss will generally reimburse me with no questions asked, i was too embarrassed to submit that many receipts and just ate some of them (figuratively and literally).
  2. I would have to say that the various levels of undress one sees in this type of weather more than makes up for any discomfort caused by the heat. But that discussion might be more appropriate for another website.
  3. I might just have to try that one. But what would my mother say about that?
  4. This came up in another thread discussing Pho vs. Dim Sum in the Heartland board. I expressed the fact that I couldn't imagine eating a bowl of Pho today (it is well over 90 in DC today). Not only that, but my appetite for all things cold or hot goes down in the Summer. The most successes I have had in starting diets have been in the warm months. Not that some good bar-b-q or good tomatoes or other good summer foods don't get my stomach growling, but in general it does go down. Isn't it amazing? I am sure that you were like me and cursing the incessant rain all summer and now, two days later we are displeased with the heat.

Helenas: It seems you are definitely not one to rush into something. So, what type did you buy and have you used it yet?
  6. "The Man" is always trying to keep us down.
  7. I agree with the last post. I think you need at least one nonstick skillet for eggs, etc. I know it is not as easy to do it this way, but as I am sure the previous thread mentioned, you might want to eschew a set in favor of a mix and match if different pieces for different uses. Some AllClad, some LeCrueset, some Calphalon, some Lodge cast-iron, some non-stick, some cheap. Edit - also, my first set was Analon non-stick and it has held up very well for pretty regular home use.
  8. The plan was for all of us to report back at the end of this week on the topics we were working on. In the meantime, I am moving forward on my own.
  9. My first weigh-in was this Saturday morning. I am happy to report that I lost 6.8 pounds. My wife lost 5.6 pounds in her first week back at it as well, so I am proud of both of us (not to break my arm patting myself on the back or anything). I managed to stay within (or close to within) my points every day this week, had four days with good sessions on the stationary bike and wrote EVERYTHING I ate in my journal. In order to allow ourselves to still get in some nice meals while on the diet we have always allowed ourselves one meal "off-plan" on Saturdays after weigh-ins where anything goes and does not go into the daily tracker. This wekk we did the same thing, but can already tell the difference as we couldn't eat quite as much as we normally would have. My goals this week are to up my water intake and make more of an effort to stay stricly within my points range even if it means going to bed hungry, as opposed to saying "this extra two points worth of (fill in the blank) isn't going to kill me". Also, after my next weigh in I want to come up with a short-term weight goal.
  10. What is on that Vietnamese Sandwich - it looks pretty good.
  11. In college, three of my fraternity brothers did this at Hardee's and could recite the enitre menu - with prices - from memory. THat is one of thos ememories I would have preferred keeping repressed.
  12. Good job, man. I have my first weigh in since starting back up tomorrow. I am actually looking forward to it.
  13. My party ettiquite problem is my own. I love cooking for others and am pretty good at putting a dish or two together, but invariably when I am making a multicourse dinner one of the integral parts of the meal ends up tasting like crap, burned, not ready in time for when it should be served or in one case left in the refrigerator only to be discovered after everyone had left. Everyone always says that dinner was great (my friends must all be more gracious than everyone else's) and my wife, who is always honest about that sort of thing agrees, but in my own mind I picture them talking about how awful everything was as they are going to their cars. So I always end up complaining about my own cooking and being the insufferable one. I guess I need to get better at cooking or stop having dinner parties.
  14. I am planning on bringing a cooler along in the car, just in case. Thinking about food while working on voter registration. That sounds like my daily routine. I am a political consultant / voter file vendor in real life but it seems like I spend as much time looking at eGullet as I do on my voter files. Just kidding (in case the boss (or clients) happens upon this site.) Its nice to see someone else in the business who has a healthy interest in food. It seems like a cold sandwich at the desk is as into food as most political people are.
  15. It sounds like i might need to have four or five meals while I am in town. That might make for an uncomfrtable ride home.
  16. That was my first thought too, Shielke.
  17. The breakfast at Market Lunch in Eastern Market is pretty good. Although I have never had them the blueberry pancakes look incredible. Posted this before I saw Becca's post.
  18. My wife and I are thinking about driving to Philadelphia from DC this weekend. Of course, we are going to eat and who better to ask than the people who read this board. We are looking for someplace casual for lunch and something slightly more upscale (but fun) for dinner. Also I have heard good things about the Reading Farmers Market. Is it really good or hype? If it is good then lunch near there would be really cool.
  19. Thanks for the quick response. Those look pretty good. THe only one I didn't see on there was the cliantro. If anyone has any ideas on that they would be appreciated, but for now I will get to clipping.
  20. This may have been covered already, but I have a very simple question and didn't have the patience to go through all 14 pages on the thread, so I hope someone will be good enough to answer. I have just started an herb garden this spring (Italian Parsley, chives, garlic chives, cliantro, dill, oregano, mint, serrano peppers, sweet basil ,thai basil). Everything is growing very well - in fact it is growing faster than I can harvest it for my personal, two-person family cooking uses. Some of the lower leaves on some of the plants are getting a little brown, or more accurately tan. What is the proper way to prune herb plants? My dill plant is at least three feet tall and my cilantro is getting pretty close (although it doesn't look entirely healthy). Thanks in advance for the help.
  21. Safeway select is terrible. On first glance these seem like they should be good, but I don't think I have ever had one that I liked.
  22. No, not really. Perhaps I was there on an off night. I think it is the grandest restaurant in the area, and that it has great potential. When you say grand, what do you mean - in terms of the design of the restaurant or was that "grand" in a more sarcastic vein? I am curious because I thought it was quite good, but I certainly don't have the experience in higher end places that you do. I would be interested in what i should be looking for that I might have missed.
  23. I think fruits are going to get me through this (at least to start). Yesterday it was more watermelon for breakfast and pineapple for dessert after dinner. Dinner by the way, was very good and very low in points. I took a salmon fillet, marinated it in a Thai Kaprow marinade of fish sauce, soy, garlic (a lot of garlic), 3 serrano chiles (couldn't find thai chiles), 1 tbs of sugar and 1 tbs of peanut oil then grilled it. I took the reserved marinade and did a stir fry of green beans, onions and grape tomatoes. Served with 1 cup of jasmine rice. I figured the points to be 5.5 for 8 ozs of salmon, 4 points for the rice and 2.5 for my half of the marinade. A lot of food for 12 points and it was easy too. Now that the first weekend back is out of the way, it is onto the next challenge - weekday lunches. But 20 minutes on the staionary bike that had been gathering dust got me going this morning. Edit - I forgot to list the most important part of the marinade - thai basil (that is what puts the kaprow in kaprow).
  24. Well, I went and weighed in yesterday for the first time in a while. The results were about what I expected, but still did not make me happy. My giant slack ass (or rahter previously slacking ass) has put back on 45 of the original 113 I lost (full disclosure: I was 440 pounds. I know, I know, I don't look that bog from my posts ). But instead of being bummed out this has motivated me. Day one went well. Stayed within my Points range (on the low end), dinner was two big bowls of watermelon, the best one i have had this year. Nothing says summer to me more than watermelon. And for exercise I hit two large buckets of golf balls in oppressive humidity. Not exactly running a marathon, I know, but it did get a good sweat going. In my own head I am starting from square one. No more references to the total amount i have lost. I am at zero and going down. Next step - set some goals for myself.
  25. That was me! Of course, how could I forget Elyse . Sorry about that. There's enough gratitude to go around, though.
