Oreo Cookies are fun to dip in Chocolate Fondue. How about a White Chocolate pot or two??

I suspect he was shut down because what he was doing was patently illegal, unless it was clearly stated on the menu that "servers here do not receive their tips. They go to the proprietor." Customers clearly were tipping based on the usual belief that they were rewarding their waiter, not the unscrupulous owner. I'm sure a first year law student could argue that as a "bait and switch" or some other basis for complaint. "Waitstaff problems" probably is equivalent to not being able to keep a waitstaff once they realized they were indentured servants by comparison with their compatriots at other establishments.

I suppose if I'd been jonesing for something for an entire year then the entire experience might have been more satifying. I'd only just heard of elotes when you started the thread a couple of weeks ago, so there hasn't been nearly enough time to build up that head of steam on the craving. I feel that I have a pastrami epiphany every time I get to Katz's Deli on my far too infrequent jaunts to NYC, and by then I've been jonesing for it since the last time several months prior. Your point is well taken.

The elusive Elote Lady was finally tracked down and cornered this evening on my way home from the office. I tried a steaming hot one whose ear of corn had obviously just come out of the steamer across the way. It was quite tasty, although not the epiphany I may unjustifiably have been hoping for. Definitely ask for the chile powder and a squeeze of fresh lime.

Couldn't have said it better myself! ← YIKES!!! That has to be one of the most outrageous and outrageously funny descriptions of foul food I've ever seen.

I attended this tasting last year and thought it was one of the better ones I've been to. Excellent Italian selections and a good representation from the rest of the wine producing areas of planet too. It's two days long for a reason. I suspect it would be best to do all the whites the first day and all the reds the second. However, having to take a day off to travel up from Philadelphia precludes me from doing that. I'll be attending on Thursday 9/9 and will probably have a few folks with me. If anyone wants to meet up there, PM me and we can wear matching Groucho glasses or something so we'll recognize each other.

I didn't think the Secret Service could join in the fun, but I certainly thought it was part of their job to clean up whatever mess their charges get into. I tip well both because I earn my money and because it's customary to do so for good service. Having the entire bill comped is EXTRAORDINARILY kind of whatever unfortunate establishment gotted stiffed by those ingrates. They should have tipped hard for that priviledge. Unless that sort of treatment is something they've come to expect and is simply feeding into their entitled sense of noblesse oblige?

← Yea but rembember that they are unemployed just outta college. You think they ever saw a check? ← Whether they saw the check or not, they saw the menus or wine/drink lists they ordered from. Surely they didn't think they'd only ordered $320 (which would make their $48 tip a low 15%) worth of whatever with their party of TWENTY FIVE PEOPLE. That's just classless behavior. Period. They're spoiled little bourgeoise brats with no concern for the "common man". At a minimum, their Secret Service babysitters should have taken care of it.

Anything made with in season root vegetables, roast beef (I make a mean roast beef, if I do say so myself!), butternut squash soup, chili, brussel sprouts.

I'm pretty much in agreement with them. I've always sung the praises of Zyr vodka and it's certainly the best grain based vodka I've tried. Never seen the "Jewel of Russia" stuff. And I love, love, love the Chopin, but I tend to like potato vodka more than grain vodka myself. Surprised they rated the Ciroc but not the Charbay or Hangar One vodkas from California. The Hangar is also grape based. This does prove my theory that the Ciroc is grossly overpriced. Much like the yearly release of the Beaulolais Nouveau, there are French marketing executives dancing around their desks singing "We're going to be RICH!!! Stoopeed Americans!, etc."

I think they are open for lunch Monday - Friday. Maybe they're giving their staff a bit of a break since Saturdays would probably be their busiest night. Maybe they don't think they serve "brunch" (by their own definition) and have chosen not to open early Saturday and Sunday for that reason.

I'm in agreement with MysticMilt. I've had several great experiences at Tria. They have one of the most unique wine by the glass selections in the city. The food is lovingly prepared from fresh ingredients. There's an incredibly cool beer selection. What's to bitch about?

welcome to south street Exactly. A what's really a shame is that with the galleries and boutiques, Manayunk was seeming like "South Street for Grown Ups" for a while. But now it's just another sea of Starbucks and Restoration Hardware.

As meat goes, short ribs are pretty "stringy" and tough. Like any acidic marinade, the wine will denature the protein and tenderize the ribs. The longer the better, so overnight sounds about right. I do this with a whole London Broil as well - stick it in a big zip-lock bag with wine and seasonings, close the bag almost the whole way and suck out as much air as possible so the meat is really coated closely by the wine. Works like a charm - you can cut the meat with your fork by the time it'd done.

Ladies and Gentlemen - we have a winner!! If you're that jazzed about doing the "scene", then go to El Vez and then stumble across the street to Capogiro. It's a lot less effort. The Lolita suggestion is a far better one. How can you not love the idea of a "BYOT"? (Bring Your Own Tequila)

Kristen: It's typically "sceney". Had drinks on the roof deck at the new Continental Midtown and it was fun but typical of any of the Starr restaurants. The waitresses uniforms look like field hockey uniforms as envisioned by a porn producer. Short short pleated denim skirts and supertight striped rugby shirts. A little precious for me. <yawn> Food is the same menu as in Old City. They only serve $7 Hot dogs and $8 burgers on the roof.

This pisses me off only because I stopped by there not once but twice this weekend in search of the elusive elotes, but no cigar for me. It seems I was either too early, or they simply weren't ready yet either time. Didn't stop me from having a Taco al Pastor and a freshly made Melon Aguafresca across the way at Taqueria Veracruzana though. I was describing my dissappointment to one of the Mexican busboys that I work with. He said Elotes are more of a cold weather food and was surprised they were making them in the dead of summer. Who knew?

A lovely bottle of Chasselas to have with your next cheese fondue would be a welcome addition to your wine cabinet. Not so easy to find here, either. I'd still be asking for chocolate! -

Grasshopper is quite good. Although I've not been in a while, the few meals I've had there have always been outstanding. Of course if you're fond of that type of fusion cuisine there's Nan (French-Thai) in West Philly and Le Me Toujours (French-Viet) in Marlton NJ. Both are BYO and excellent.

Earlier, some ravioli with fresh peas off the menu. Late afternoon snack - cornbread and chili that was staff meal.

Actually I want a big old Victorian with a wrap around porch in Haddonfield that's steps away from the lovely little "downtown Haddonfield" area that has several nice restaurants/BYOBs as well as an awesome collection of consignment stores for an Olympic class full contact shopper like myself.
