  1. I mean, other than the possibility of electrocuting myself, or getting 3rd degree burns, it's not a terrible idea, is it?
  2. I need an old, quality Sunbeam toaster. Which probably doesn't hold bagels! I'd miss the CSO, and it's ability to reheat many things so wonderfully. As well as the good toast. But what about the BSO, and a little metal cup of hot water in there?
  3. Thanks - you're too kind. One thing I remember: our kitchen pre-renovation was my half-assed reno of the existing 40-year old kitchen when we moved in in 2003. It was done by a friend and me, with IKEA cabinets and shelves. If I recall correctly, they actually used German hardware on the hinges and drawer slides. Never had a problem with it. The drawers held a lot... And we put in one of their pantry cabs...

    Rice Cookers

If I left the rice in the rice cooker, then I'd have this big rice cooker on the counter the whole next day, while making breakfast, lunch, etc. I clean up after dinner, and the kitchen must be brand new looking for the morning. It's a restaurant learning/chef thing...the morning cook needs everything clean! I prefer to make fresh whenever we need it. And I always make extra - for fried rice, or for reheating in the soon-to-be-defunct CSO.
  5. No - that's not an issue here. This is the fan wheezing away. I never think these things are worth fixing (since I can't fix ANYTHING, I'd have to pay to have it fixed). New ones appear to be readily available, but I might want something different, which in my case would be a non-steam Breville. Not enough room.
  6. I could get a refurbished on on Wayfair for like $219.00. But I don''t know if I want another. Actually, this is on Amazon - CUISINART CSO-300N1C Combo Steam Plus Convection Oven, Silver It's only $267 or so - hmmmm.....(I really like the oven).
  7. Good question. This Is when I got my first one. So that's over 8 years ago (when I started the original thread about the Steam Girl). Now - checking Amazon, I see the second one wasn't purchased until July, 2019 - meaning Steam Girl 1 lasted over 5 years. Steam Girl 2 is not gonna make it to the ripe, old age of 3. But more importantly, isn't the lifespan of a product like this based more on usage than actual age in years? And I'd guess I've used model 2 a lot, especially over the pandemic time. A real lot. In any event, time for a new countertop toaster/oven. Which might not have steam.

Of course it is! See - my problem, back when I was in school, was that I didn't think enough! You leave it on the warming function? Isn't there the potential for, ummm, spoilage? (I was bad in biology too).
  9. My suggestion - when we reno-ed the kitchen and everything became pull-out drawers/shelves - I bought the heavy duty stuff - almost every shelf and drawer hardware is alleged to support 100 lbs. The hardware we used for hinges and drawer and shelf runners was Blum...similar to this...https://www.blum.com/us/en/products/runnersystems/movento/programme/ Installed properly, they work really well. And they hold a lot.
  10. Shit - it sounds like my Steam Girl is dying. I have no spare ones.

    Dinner 2022

    What?! No ice cream...
  12. I have an idea...get rid of that centre dividing wall (unless it's structural to the house, obv) and get some real benefits.

Semi-mini cassoulet, using Rancho Gordo's Alubia blanca beans, cooked the day before. They get so nice and creamy when recooked in the oven. Sausage and house-made duck confit in the cassoulet. Lots of bread crumbs only made it better.

While I couldn't get by (well, of course I could) without the Zojirushi, some of their claims in the ads (at least on Amazon) are pretty head-scratching. For instance (from the Amazon link above): "Platinum infused non-stick inner cooking pan changes water quality for sweeter tasting rice" is one I have a problem with. FWIW, I usually make more rice than we'll eat at a meal - the leftovers make for good fried rice.
  15. Might be said about lots of different foods.

Cumin beef following a Fuchsia Dunlop recipe (but with less oil). Sir-fried broccoli. Jasmine rice.

Yes - those are "rice" cups. I find they hold between 140 - 150 grams of rice, depending on varietal. And exactly 180 grams of water, as it's a 180 ml "cup."
  19. Now that's classic! Do you love those cookies? And so easy.
  20. Evidently, Louis CK liked them too.
  21. But the bottom one has my favorite cookie on the cover! Pierre Herme's Korovas (aka world peace cookies). Looks like the cover is just misrepresented on the bottom photo. Check her website for all her books...https://doriegreenspan.com/books/

    Rice Cookers

I think the nice thing about the Zo is that many of them will properly cook every type of rice, oats, porridges, etc. etc. I can load up the one I have with washed rice and water, set a timer for whenever, and the rice will be ready at the exact time I've set. (I think the retractable cord is a big plus, especially in my tight kitchen).
  23. In that case, might as well get Marcella's name correct as well. It is Marcella Hazan. (And Harold McGee).

Zojirushi. One of the models made in Japan. I've been very happy with this one. They have a deep line up.
  25. Only one way to find out…
