I have seen the same non-rinsing behavior in Ireland that Hallie describes. I remember having houseguests insist on doing the dishes, then running into the kitchen later to give everything a proper rinse. No one else seemed bothered by it, and in fact I never felt ill after eating in a home where non-rinsing was the norm.

as we sat, Men At Work was on the stereo. another bad sign. but i quickly realized that there's just not enough aussie music to make the soundtrack 100% aussie. what are we talkin here, Men At Work, Midnight Oil, Oliva-Newton John, AC/DC. did i miss 1 or 2?
Off the top of my head you missed INXS, Crowded House and Nick Cave.

Malahide is a lovely seaside town much closer to the airport than the city centre. She could visit Malahide Castle or take a long walk along the strand overlooking the Irish Sea down towards Portmarnock. Although it's been ages since I've eaten out there, it's an upscale bedroom community and has plenty of dining options for a town its size.

And there's always . . . the Florabama Lounge.
Ah, the Florabama. I missed many a Monday morning class because of our Sunday afternoons there. It has a permanent spot in my list of all-time favorite bars. They even have a website.

Just when you thought you'd seen enough of Rocco...
Personally I wasn't curious about what was under Rocco's kilt, but considering his current circumstances, maybe this could help his image Actually some of the other guys at the Dressed to Kilt benefit, especially Huey Morgan, don't look bad at all. [via Gawker]

I'm tempted to try the Bialetti model that includes an electric heating element. Seems like a great idea for travelling, but the automatic shut-off would make it easier for me on those mornings when I have a 6am crew call - I can get ready for work without having to keep an eye on the stove. Any feedback?

Williamsburg Bridge: Stay left, take the BQE (Triboro/LIE direction) to the Roosevelt Ave. exit (toward Broadway). Left onto Roosevelt, bear right onto 39th Ave. and Sripraphai will be on the right.

Is the subway not an option? I stop there on the way back and forth from Long Island, but would choose the train if I wasn't already in the car.
Assuming you're coming from Manhattan, which East River crossing will you take?

A Black and Tan is made with equal parts Guinness and bitters/pale ale (often either Harp or Bass)
In Ireland they'll usually make them with Harp and Guinness, but only American tourists order them

Lots of current or former Central NY-ers in the house. I've seen many a movie at Carousel Mall.
I spent several of my teenage years in Manlius.

In the Observer Food Monthly, the organic pub up in Islington, The Duke of Cambridge, is in the top three for Best Sunday Lunch.
I was going to bring up the Duke of Cambridge, but seeing as it is the only gastro-pub I've ever been to, I assumed my sample size was too small to comment
I had a lovely lunch there on my last visit to London and would go back in a second.

There's the Candle Cafe which I've never been to.
I occasionally have lunch at the original location (75th and Third) since it's right near my design school. I'm no vegan but I've had some very good meals there. The new location, Candle 79 (79th and Lex), is promoted as more of a fine dining experience. If I get a chance to try it this week I'll report back. Here's their website.

I tried Young's Double Chocolate Stout a while back. It was nice, but not close to knocking Guinness off the top of my list.
The Young's site description:
A dark, ruby coloured stout, almost black from a distance. A distinctive chocolate flavour with a smooth and velvety finish.Pale ale malt, crystal malt, roasted barley, chocolate malt, special blend of sugars, Fuggles and Goldings hops, real dark chocolate and chocolate essence. Melted chocolate bars are added to the boil and the essence is added after filtration.

Man, I feel stoned just reading this sentence! It conveys perfectly those passionate discussions about nothing that wasted away my parents' hard-earned tuition money.
i actually have a few audio tapes of some sessions. complete and utter nonsense.
So what exactly has changed?

I went to Rome just over a year ago. My report from that thread:
My hotel, which was booked online, was endorsed by Gambero Rosso as a good value, so although I was never able to find a copy of the guide in English, I did take note of it. I stayed at Hotel Parlamento, right off the via del Corso, midway between the Piazza di Spagna, Trevi fountain and Pantheon. It was very clean, the staff were extremely helpful (all English-speaking) and I thought it was a bargain, considering the location, at just over 100 euros a night .It's modest but very well-located, and they do have a lift. If I hadn't been there in November I would have tried for one of the rooms that opens onto the roof terrace. Here's the hotel's website.

project, based on your approach, I'd be willing to bet you're getting a different "special sauce" on your Big Mac.

As visitors to Ireland (and some Irish pubs) no doubt quickly learned, the Irish word for woman is "Mná" and the word for man is "Fir". Add some clueless tourists and several pints of Guiness. Hilarity ensues.
Southern Bars

Brooks, you did such a wonderful job describing it that by the time I got to this line I could hear Lucinda Williams singing it It is a beautiful, evocative song (and easy enough that even I learned how to play it ).
Since my college days I always thought of Judge Roy Bean's in Daphne, AL, just across the bay from Mobile, as the quintessential southern bar: big, old rustic roadhouse with great live music, BBQ pit out back, loads of people outside on weekend afternoons surrounded by huge oak trees with overhanging Spanish moss. Anyone know if it's still around?
The Flora-Bama (another personal favorite) was our alternate, although I never managed to attend the infamous Mullet Toss that joiei mentioned. We'd stay on the beach all day, running back and forth for additional refreshments, then after sunset settle in for the band (endless Lynyrd Skynyrd and Marshall Tucker Band covers, of course).
