    Steamer or microwave?

First, I am assuming you are not talking about visible "steam", which is just tiny water droplets. Actual steam (water vapor) is not visible. But there are not many molecule in one cubic foot of steam, (thermal mass) compared to one cubic foot of boiling water. Therefore, you have about 1,120 BTUs in one cubic foot of boiling water and only 240 BTUs in one cubic foot of steam. dcarch

  8. "The garden is about life and beauty and the impermanence of all living things." The garden is also used to impress your friends and neighbors how wealthy you are. "The garden is about feeding your children, providing food for the tribe. " Then it is no longer a garden. It becomes a farm. (IMHO). In some communities, it is illegal to plant tomatoes in the front of the house. dcarch

    Steamer or microwave?

Unless you are undernourished in general, I feel your concern need not be in nutrition. I would be more interested in flavor for enjoyment. To me microwave or steaming is about the same in nutrition. The water you see after steaming are mostly from steam condensation, not from the vegetable. dcarch

I think there are more than one kind of flies. Most of then are attracted to meat or reproduce in meat. Look for that dead mouse or a piece of old meat on the floor behind something. dcarch

    Dinner 2016 (Part 8)

Summer has been hectic. A few recent ones, using lots from the garden. dcarch Deep fried squash blossom tastes like fried dough. I though of using the blossom's "saffron" to make a risotto. More blossom flavor. Again, squash blossom, on top of eggplant parmigiana Still more squash blossoms, deep fried. SV pork roast on squash greens (yes, you can eat squash greens)
  16. No. I was only talking about leaves of some varieties. Not seeds. Also, Morning Glory and sweet potatoes are in the same family. Sweet potato leaves are a common vegetable for Asians and are sold in many Asian stores. dcarch
  17. Some Morning Glory leaves are edible. dcarch

    Air Fryers

As I said, it can cook many recipes better than other appliances, just not frying. We like fried food because we like oil and fat. An air "fryer" can do very well with food that is fatty, like chicken wings, a small game hen, pork belly, etc. It can probably bake very well. It may even roast a small quantity of green coffee beans. I would not mind getting one for my kitchen. I probably mod it to be a hot air sous vide cooker. dcarch

    Air Fryers

It's a small convection cooker. It has nothing to do with frying. At 1,500 watts (20 watts are used for the fan), it is fairly low powered and good for small quantity of food. My hair dryer is 1,800 watts. There are recipes it can work well, and there are many frying recipes it can't work. Potato chips for instance. It is mostly a dehydrator for making chips. dcarch
  25. As we know, it has been shown that millions of smart cars can easily be hacked. Imaging what can happen. People in North Korea can shutdown your refrigerator and extort you to pay a ransom. dcarch
