Yes, I think it's either beets or red cabbage, can't remember-- but the whole place is kind of shabby chic, a little dated, so maybe that garnish is appropriate!
-
Fairway in New York, on Broadway has had them for a while. Still like fresh beets better.

Makes one quite nostalgic. A bygone era. Could never happen in 2003.

Tommy: Tommy and I actually AGREE on something? Wow!!

As long as it's fairly close to Westport, does not have to be within the city limits-- but we have to get to the Playhouse from the restaurant pretty easily.
-
We are going to the Westport Playhouse in 2 weeks, and need a restaurant that we can go to before the show, that will get us out in time. Prefer New American or French, moderately priced. No Italian or Ethnics. All recs appreciated!!

I agree wholeheartedly. At a Super U in Pertuis (Vaucluse) last year we got a Walkman for 7 Euros and a Watch for 30 Euros, to replace broken ones that we had brought from home. Another wonderful feature of the Hypermarchés is that they are always located outside of town, in the Zone Industrielle, so as not to disturb the attractiveness of the downtown towns and villages. Why can't we do that?

An area just in between would be Ridgewood-- a lot of choices there, but my favorite for lunch is Joel's Malibu Kitchen. A very cute, cosy place, wonderful food personally prepared by Joel. Non-ethnic, but a lot more interesting than Italian. NY Times Review Enjoy!!

I have heard the Le Miramar is under new management now, and is not what it used to be. A big tourist destination and overpriced. On the other side of the port, one block in, is a pedestrianised street, Rue Neuve, where a couple of dozen seafood restos abound. We stopped at one in a beautiful square and gorged ourselves on bouillabaisse at lunchtime. Could hardly walk after that. Mostly Marseillais patronizing these places. I had a Bourride in a restaurant in Cassis, much less expensive than bouillabasse, and it was really excellent. A deep, complex flavor, also served with the toasts and the rouille. Enjoy!!

So you believe in deduction over education? What are your criteria for credibility? Only things you are in agreement with?

I think the word Panini here might mean different things to different people. In an Italian deli, they just mean "sandwiches". You mention pressed sandwiches, I think this is more commonly known as a "Croque Monsieur", usually with some type of melted cheese. Nordstrom's cafe used to make a pressed Croque Monsieur type sandwich, but I haven't been in quite a while. You might have to go to the city....

A wildlife expert study, all these folks have PHDs. Goose Droppings Study Things are not always what they seem.

Sure, that's a good reason to kill all the geese. Especially since their poop is non-toxic and non-disease carrying. Maybe we should emulate Greece, where they are solving their "nuisance" dog and cat problem (They beg for food in the outdoor retaurants) by methodically poisoning them. They will poison 1/4 million animals in preparation for the Olympics so that no one sees the problem during those 2 weeks. As a matter of fact, poisoning dogs and cats in Greece has become "sport"; you can never let a pet dog or cat out of your sight. More on this: Olympic Greek "Sport" Maybe we can eliminate ALL the other species of animals on the earth so we don't have to be "inconvenienced".

Just taking a ride on Rtes 10, 206, or 23 and comparing the situation to 10 years ago will prove that the real problem is overdevelopment. As NJ is already the densest state in the US, where does it stop? Does it stop when the whole state starts to look like one big city? Right on, RP, you echo my sentiments. Most locals up there agree that it's the lack of taking care of household trash that causes most of the problems. As well as the McMansions. It would be ironic if more people are hurt or injured by the 10,000 rednecks shooting away in the backyards next fall than have ever been hurt by the bears!!
-
I think we should shoot the RE developers for overdeveloping New Jersey into its current status of the most densely populated state in the US; this stuff is not even a band-aid; Removal of habitat, no planning, block after block of condo and McMansion, that's the real problem. This idea is STUPID!!

Bux, thanks so much for the info-- I watched last night, and loved the coverage. (Nice views of the French countryside as well) I get it on DirectTV Channel 608. So glad I dumped my cable recently!!

Most of the info on this thread is over a year old; Can anyone recommend some restaurants in Northern NJ with outdoor dining NOT on the street, e.g., a patio, garden or water view without exhaust fumes? Thanks.

Didn't know about this thread... See rewritten message ahaed...

FG, Fluching seems to be THE Chinatown of New York these days. Most of the authentic cooking is there. I stumbled on a place last winter called Dumpling Garden and just recently went back. Except for the menu translations, they barely speak any English. The Hot & Sour Soup is different and better than any I've tasted. A bunch of interesting, mostly vegetarian appetizers, we chose mushrooms and wheat dough. The dumplings are 12 for anywhere between $3.50 and $5. Steamed or fried. We prefer steamed. One of the most interesting was the Lamb and Calabaza, which turns out to be Pumpkin or yellow squash. Good thing we didn't get the Omosa, which it turns out is some kind of stomach entrails. A gem of a place, immaculately clean, you can eat off the floor. Worth the schlep, I did it from Jersey. Dumpling Garden Corner 40th Road & College Point Blvd. Flushing.

What's a "Jewish Diner"? 99% of diners are Greek. and Baumgart's has nothing on the menu anywhere that's ethnic "Jewish" food.

Yes, I did not realize that this thread was started quite a while ago; Saigon Republic is a great place-- As far as the Star Ledger, it is sold in every newsstand, convenience store, and newspaper outlet in Bergen County. They have an obligation to cover Bergen as well.
-
Don't know why Saigon Republic in Englewood got short shrift here, I see it was mentioned way down the list-- I just want to put my plug in that it is one of the best restaurants in North Jersey, as well as a great Vietnamese resto. There are many non-Vietnamese dishes here as well, but the Pho is the best I've ever had. Get the one with the rare beef, which cooks the beef in the broth. The broth is actually cooked overnight, and has such an indescribable complex set of flavors....FABULOUS!! Everything on the menu is great, and the waiter/host, Joe, makes it a really fun dining experience. Make sure you make a reservation, only about 10-11 tables. My mouth is watering......

I saw that, of course; but I find it odd that a farm has an unlisted telephone #. ! (Verizon says it's a "private" number)
-
I wanted to go there one Sunday and take the Bread-making mini-seminar, but I cannot find a phone # for the place anywhere to make a reservation and ask some questions. Does anybody know the phone # of Bobolink? Thanks.

Lou-- just noticed your quote of Mike Barnicle at the bottom of your messages.... love it! Isn't he the guy that got fired from the Boston Globe for plagiarism?
