  1. This is off the APHIS site that we have talked about often here in the past; So as far as the canned Rillettes, terrines, and the bloc de foie gras, I'm not sure if they do or do not pass muster. but I have brought those items back many times. Anybody know if these canned offal items pass these APHIS guidelines?
  2. Looks like Jerry's Osteria in Tenafly has closed, the place is empty and the sign says "closed for renovation", an indication that it will never open again--- guess Jerry will have to confine himself to the Italian Specialties and the Perfume/Cosmetics in Englewood.
  3. Let's get the Inquirer to do a piece on weekending in NYC and have them leave out Papaya King.... Holly will go crazy!!
  4. OK, that explains it. I can't imagine any French person longing for French's mustard!!
  5. This reminds me of that old Yogi-ism, "The place is so overcrowded, nobody goes there anymore!"
  6. Well, playing devil's advocate, it is tough to single out 3 or 4 places for a weekend in a city so chock full of great dining choices-- I'm sure the guy never even heard of Carman's. Hopefully, an informed tourist would use a more local source for opinions on restaurants. As a footnote, Ken Kalfus did a 1- pager on "What's Doing in Philly" in February in the NYTimes. He mentions LaCroix, El Vez, Fork, WArmdaddy's, and Kibbitz in the City. Not bad choices, either. What's Doing in Philly Article
  7. thanks, I missed it... sounds like a winner-- prices are MUCH higher than Finks, though... (but I'm guessing they didn't get their smokers on eBay, either! )
  8. Could you please post a copy of the menu?
  9. Is this recipient a French person or an Ex-pat?
  10. This sounds quite good, we are often in that plaza to patronize Café Boulevard, a very nice unheralded restaurant. BTW, wasn't it mentioned here that KT is also opening a Noodle Shop Restaurant? Where will it be and when it is opening?
  11. I think you've just voiced one of the major strategies of American marketing!!
  12. What could a middle ground possibly be? Smokers would be allowed to light up but only smoke half a cigarette?
  13. A/ Depends on where you are coming from, but B/ I think I might opt for Flushing as a better destination foodie neighborhood with lots of unique Chinese and other Asian delights.
  14. I'm sure there is absolutely no altruistic reason for the retailer to do sampling; it's more likely that the sampling is subsidized by the manufacturer of the product, as the sales of the product could increase fifty-fold on the day of the sampling. As far as sampling of bulk products, bread, cheese, etc., it just plain increases sales. Makes for an impulse buy.

    Pickle recipes

There is also the New York-style pickle, made without any vinegar-- definitely worth a recipe!!
  16. Queens Gazette also did a sparkling review of Uncle Georges; I did not bring it up before because I think the objectivity of this little paper may be of some question as many of these small publications base their restaurant reviews on the advertising revenue generated in the past by the establishment they are reviewing. Queens Gazette Uncle George's Rave
  17. Well, I guess we can all respectfully disagree.... The place is really too simple to be THAT bad-- As a matter of fact, it was just touted in a blurb in last week's Village Voice; Village Voice Mini Review Not much of a risk either, low prices here! (If you go, please let us know what YOU thought!)
  18. The quintessential place to get authentic Greek food, ambience, and culture has to be the one and only Uncle George's. On Broadway between 33 and 34th streets, after 5 minutes you will think you were transported to Greece. Do not miss Uncle George's!! Uncle George's Web Site Uncle George's 33-19 Broadway Astoria
  19. I think you have to define some parameters for your list; in good weather (and many times even in bad weather) there are literally thousands of outdoor tables in Paris. It is part of the culture. Probably over 80% of Paris restaurants do outdoor seating. Actually, it would be much easier to compile a list of Parisian restaurants that do NOT do outdoor seating!!
  20. There are over 2,500 stations in France; how could they get x ray machines and the staff necessary to accomplish this? You can't stop a suicide bomber anywhere; but closing the luggage bins may discourage the use of unattended time bombs like the ones used in Spain....
  21. Nonsense, personal freedoms stop when they encroach on other's personal fteedoms! The old cliché of yelling "fire" in a theater comes to mind. Anyone has the freedom to inhale on this plant whose packaging is labeled "hazardous" and "causes death" as long as nobody else is forced to inhale it!!
  22. On Monday, Ireland banned smoking in the workplace, as well as in all restaurants and pubs. Hard to imagine those stereotypical smoke-filled pubs with clean, breathable air now! News reports indicate a general willingness of the public to comply, but the pub owners are a bit skitterish about business. We have had a long, long Egullet discussion on the New York forum after smoking was banned last year in all NYC bars-- Apparently all the rants about losing business appear to be unwarranted with the new statistics just released. Any comments on this forward-thinking move by Ireland? Could it spread to the rest of Europe?
  23. Fratelli claims that their pasta is homemade, as well. (Not on the internet, but on the in-person menu.) Another footnote-- in Italy, 99% of pasta served in restaurants is the dried type-- homemade is rare-- and over there, the pasta is FABULOUS!!
  24. So the hubbub the bars made last year about the smoking ban is evocative of Shakespeare: "...a tale told by an idiot, full of sound of fury, signifying nothing." I'm sure in Ireland the pubs will also continue to prosper minus smoking...
