  1. I don't think I have seen real beer around here in a while either...... my last sip of beer was about 17 years ago so I can't help out on what's new.
  2. Thanks! this is sort of the information I am looking for I was looking at some of the addresses of some of these places and they aren't really areas I would feel comfortable in alone.....
  3. I don't think I have ever seen konatsu before, it looks interesting
  4. now I am very jealous! I have definitely been in Japan too long, I can only figure out how big things are in terms of jou and tsubo....
  5. I did look at Wasabi in the store a bit back, I can't remember what was in it now but I didn't buy it. I buy magazines every month, especially when I see a new one and I really can't remember what I didn't like about it.... I guess I will have to go back to the bookstore
  6. In the Cleveland Ethnic Eats book (my new bible ) I notice quite a few shops that offer take out, I don't remember seeing these in the older edition I was using last summer. I spent a week in Boston last summer and my sister's house was practically across the street from this great Cuban place, we would often stop in for a late snack of Cuban sandwiches and fried plantains. Any chance of finding these in Cleveland? Edit: anyone ever been to any of the Dave's supermarkets?
  7. have you seen the magazine thread? The newest issue of Elle a Table (July #20) is really good, it should be in stores until 7/31. The July issue of Shokusai Roman is about curry, I haven't picked it up yet though. It should be in stores until about 7/15.
  8. how many jou is that?
  9. a new kitchen..... ii na... I just got a new stove top and I finally have a fish grill! it also has the sensor that automatically turns off the heat if the deep frying pan gets too hot. The fire is very strong, almost twice the strength of my previous one, the pan of pasta water came to a boil before I barely had time to assemble a sauce.
  10. that picture is gorgeous! I like the idea of beef and maitake together.
  11. here you go Emiko Kaminuma's Oshaberi Cooking
  12. Cookpad is a site of recipes of ordinary people for ordinary people. ← cookpad reminds me of the site allrecipes, I have used it a couple times with good result. I really like the recipes from Elle a table magazine, though they don't have that many on their website it is still nice. They are often western style recipes/techniques but using Japanese ingredients. Bob & Angie is really nice, I use this one the most probably...
  13. whale burgers.... I'd actually love to give that a try! EDIT I found a picture of it
  14. it is actually very balanced and if anything the ume taste is stronger. The ume taste sort of fades into a very mild mint taste. Many Japanese mint gums are quite mild nothing like some of the really strong flavored ones in the US.
  15. yes that picture looks like castera to me too. I am glad you are enjoying our forum!
  16. my friend is small, she'll fit in the trunk I am glad you are coming!
  17. Is yuzu popular in Israel?
  18. first of all welcome to eGullet! I have no idea what that first thing is, I also thought is was castera until you said it was hard and crispy... Do you have a picture of the package? Tai-yaki are the ones that are shaped like tai (sea bream, a kind of fish), though they are all pretty much the same. Some times they are just called ningyo-yaki in general, but those tend to be the ones that have faces. I have seen ones like yours though labeled as nigyo-yaki. here is a little information abou ningyo-yaki
  19. Domo. Nihongo ga hisashiburi desu. (Mixed metaphor?) ← very good! I will give you an A you could have gotten an A+ if you had written it in Japanese characters.... Still no one coming from Cleveland??
  20. I wonder if its too late for me to start your "daily speak about food in Japanese" lesson. LOL ← it's never too late Daily Nihongo the quiz will be held after dinner....
  21. I will happily take on sous chef duties and dishwashing and my friend can help as well. Her English is quite limited and she has offered her services in case anyone wants to brush up on their Japanese...
  22. Had a wonderful dinner at Maisen last night Since my purse was too small to hold my large camera, you will have to wait until Sun-ki (skchai) finishes his trip before the pictures are posted....
  23. My Sanyo is ECJ-FK18, the 18 refers to the 10 cup model (if it was FK10 it would be the 5 cup). This is not the top of the line for Sanyo but pretty close, I paid 31,000 yen ($300) for it but the actual price in stores is closer to $400, the top of the line ones are in the $500 to $600 range....
  24. konnyaku somen, konnyaku cut into somen like strips, this was a purchased product that came with a "special sauce" not bad, it was a bit bland but the kimchi I ate it with helped
  25. This is the yuzu drink that I love It is called yuzu komi (koumi) and it is a concentrate made with yuzu juice, honey and sugar. It needs be diluted with 8 to 9 parts water or other liquid. their homepage
