  1. I want to eat whatever tastes good. I have had some good budhist chinese food that had the faux dishes you area talking about, and when done well, it is an art form. :) To this day, the best wonton soup I've ever had (meat or veggie) was at one such place in Flushing, Queens (NYC). The place is long gone now.
  2. My choice was Prudhomme or La Dou, so i went with Prudhomme.
  3. I don't know the cooking method (probably not pan fried) but the fried chicken at Flavors in Falls Church is truly great. Takes a while cuz they are making it fresh.
  4. I saw Paul Prudhomme and Suvir Saran present today. :)
  5. I was theer today, mainly on the Oman and Nuestra Musica areas. Too bad the equipment for the Halwa isn't up to DC specs. They had to cancel it. :( Going back tomorrow to check teh food culture stuff out. BTW, the smoked fish platter (forest cafe) and berry shortcake (american cafe, no poundcake in it, whee) were pretty good. Vennsion stew (foorest cafe) wasn't bad, though a but tough.
  6. I was just about to say the same thing. I'll be trying the cafeteria at the museum in DC soon. Also, try the Pow Wow at the Queens County Farm Museum in Floral Park, whixh should be in July. Plenty of native american food there, including things like buffalo fry bread, vennison or elk sausages, etc...
  7. I'm a big fan of SE Asian food (including Thai). My favorite Thai dishes are Mango Sticky rice, various duck dishes (pretty much one per Thai restaurant i like), banana sticky rice from Sripraphai, and that ground beef, onions, and rice noodles dish form sripraphai. There is a restaurant in Arlington, VA that has that rice noodle dish, but it is better at Sri. I am often not a fan of pad thai, becaus it is uninteresting at a lot of thai places. when it is good, it is great though. :)
  8. Oops, my subscription lapsed. I just re-started it, but I'll miss taht issue, and possibly the following one. At leats it doesn't sound like I missed much with that issue.
  9. The asparagus from the Dupont market went well really with the garlic pesto I got from another vendor there.
  10. I've had good conversations with many of the farmers at Arlington Market. :) They know me on sight now. :)
  11. I didn't try it, but I was sitting next to a couple at Madrid Churreria in Adams Morgan, and their paella looked pretty good.
  12. I like WholeFoods Arlington for fish. I often get less expensive fish there, like bluefish. fresh. good selection. I wont get fish at giant or harris teeter. Also, the fishstore across the street from the VA Square Giant is a wholesaler who has a storefront with a small selection. very fresh though, and scandinavian products as well. i think one of the names is Swedish Fish. It is on Washington blvd. i hear M. Slavin and sons is good.
  13. I like the icecream at Arax Cafe, an Armenian cafe in Westover (washington blvd) in arlington. They have someone making them icecream. It is graet, but not cheap. Doesn't Sinplicity (an upscale icecream maker that supplies restaurants) have a shop in S. Arlington?
  14. Aw. sorry to see Sara leave TVFN. I sat in on a taping of Cooking Live a couple of years ago, and spoke to her afterwards. A real sweetie.
  15. Hmmmm....well there are Mexican foodtrucks at the FDIC construction site next to the GMU Grad and Law Schools in Arlington, VA. Does that count? heh. Its odd, actually, sometimes there are three of those trucks, sometimes one, sometimes none. And when I do see them, they are usually serving the constructing workers lunch at 10am. I think they follow each other to the various construction sites around here. I did try the tamales at one twice, but it turned out to be some sort of greasy cornbread. I liked it. :)
  16. Honey glazed carrots with a little lemon juice and maybe ground ginger?
  17. I once had a terrible bottle of balsamic, and it actually worked really well on a roast chicken. You have to add it halfway through the cooking so it doesn't burn.
  18. I've meant to get to Singh....but I'm just too enamored of Thai Square. Ok....I only tried it a week ago...but I've been there 3 times in a week. Authentic and yummy. Has some dishes I'm used to from Sripraphai in nyc. I'm not saying its as good as Sri (blasphemy!) but its goooood.

    Teeccino?

Thank you. That si what I needed to know. -Jason I haven't tried this type, but I do have some herbal coffee substitute called Raja's Cup produced by Maharishi Ayur-Ved (you can find it in health food stores). It claims to be 100% caffeine free- what's the point? It is made from Clearning Nut, Kasmard, Licorice, and Winter Cherry. Plain it is very bitter, however, with a good cream and honey it works for a late night cup when you don't want to have caffeine but crave something strong. ←
  20. Anyone like the stuff? Is it any good. Someone asked me about it, so I'm curious. I know it has chicory.
  21. I had some of their food at the Clarendon Day festival. It was good...but I need to actually eat in teh restaurant some time and try more dishes.
  22. I guess i've been lucky. the churros have been good when I've went there. As far as the hot chocolate..it has been good for dunking. Certainly not watery or swiss miss like....but not thick like what i had in spain. Supposedly...they ahd the thock stuff originally...but "Americans" didn't go for it. *shrug*
  23. yup. I go for churros con chocolate....but they do have a full menu. Used to be a real dive, but tehy redid it recently. Nope. But sounds like you are suggesting I add it to my list this winter. ←
  24. Have you tried churros con chocolate at Madrid Churreria in Adams Morgan?
