Almost definitely, I would say! I think the OP is looking for foods that are lower in carbs than potatoes, and it also sounds to me like they should be lower in calories. Don't think polenta would be any good here.

  2. I am pretty sure jerusalem artichokes do not contain starch, and can be pureed quite well also.

1/2 cup Jerusalem artichoke has about 13 grams of carbohydrate, which is about the same as potato. I'm sure some of that is fiber (indigestible starch)....

ETA: Just looked it up- 1/2 cup sliced raw Jerusalem artichoke has a little over 1 g of fiber.

Jerusalem artichoke would actually be a good suggestion. They are much lower in calories than potatoes, and some of their carbohydrate content is made up of inulin, which is indigestable and thus does not provide energy. It also has prebiotic qualities.

As for sweet potatoes which someone else mentioned, they are tasty and very nutritious but are higher in calories than potatoes, therefore on a weightloss diet you will need to be careful how much of them you eat.

  3. Um...I definitely disagree with rlibkind! thelawnet is right, too much turmeric definitely ruins a dish.

I have definitely found that different brands of turmeric have tasted different. Your best bet is probably just to try lots of brands, find one you like and stick with it.

  4. Hmm, I am in the UK and I desperately want something similar to the Sumeet Asian Kitchen Machine, which unfortunatly I have only seen with a voltage that can be used in the US.

Does anyone know of a good equivalent that I can buy in the UK, or that at least works in the UK if I buy it abroad? I would really like to ask for it for Christmas, so I'd like replies soon please!!

I found this, which is another sumeet grinder which seems to do some similar things. Does anyone know if it's any good? Like, as good as the Asian Kitchen Machine, which is supposed to be there best product?

  5. We had a special birthday lunch for my Mum, so it was a nice big meal!

Dad cooked a mixed vegetable "curry" and some spicy potatoes, and I made moong dal with tomatoes and courgette and also a delicious rice and green peas pilau, in which the rice was cooked in coconut milk. For pudding I made home-made rasgollas and they were divine!
