  1. Tried the Toad in the hole. pretty good, but I think my sausages were too lean. The knob of lard may be a good idea. Wilfred mentioned bangers and mash. Interesting, that was my next question. I'm not certain what this dish is but surely that's more that just sausage and mashed potatoes.??

FG - I guess you are correct. Dinardo's in Philly flies their crabs in from Louisiana, but having a boat on Maryland's eastern shore makes me think of blue crabs and Maryland
  3. I live in Bensalem PA just outide Philly. I am curently checking local orniances to see if I can locate in and industrial park or office complex. We do have some big ones. I also have contacted local malls with the idea of placing an electric indoor cart. Another consideration is moving to the Jersey Shore. Offering from a cart is limited, I plan Hot Dog, Chili dog (I make a pretty mean chili) and slaw dog, but according to the cart manufacurer some Boards of Health won't allow chili or slaw from a cart. Beverage must be canned, Birch Beer, Cola and Mountain dew.
  4. I find this thread very interesting. A few months ago, a hot dog was someting I grabbed on the boardwalk. The began my search for Jimmy John's ( see my thread "The quest for the BEST") My Google search led me to Holly Moore's Hot Dog page. Since then I have been doing some research. I know about Usinger's, but have never tasted then. I have had Sabrett's and liked them. I am about to retire and need to do something for extra income. I am considering buying a cart (I have found a supplier in Miami) and I am very interested in the discussion of brands and cooking methods. If anyone has tasted both, is Usinger's (have to get them from Milwalkee.) better than Sabrett (available locally) Would the added expense of adding a grill to the cart pay off?

    Shells

To me, the best tasting food frm the sea comes in shells. Clams oysters mussels lobster and in MHO, the best of all, the Maryland blue crab. Give me a pile of steamed crabs, a roll of paper towels, a mallet, and a pitcher of beer, and I'm in heaven. But the topper is a good Maryland crab cake. The ones I enjoy the most are found at a place called the Captain's Galley, in the city of Crisfield MD. a place that boasts of being the crab capital of the world. The cakes are broiled, vey little evidence of what is holding the together, and delicious. Does anyone have a recipe for a crab cake with a very minimal filling?
  6. Can any of our friends in the UK explain this dish to me? I have heard of it often on TV shows, and being adventurous would like to try it. I did manage to find a few recipes, but they are very different. How should a good Toad in the Hole look, taste etc?
  7. C, do you think Jane got rich off her salt? Haven't thought about it since I was a kid and we put it on deviled eggs. My mom used to put it in everything, but those were the 70s.... I used it on a lot of things as well. Its been a few years though now that I have become sodium aware(doesn't go well with blood pressure pills)
  8. I have been making Bloody Marys with Clamato for years. Never knew it had a name. I make mine individually according to the guest's preference on heat etc. (BTW my wife is allergic to clams, if she had one of these she would be sick all night, so I second the idea of alerting people to the presence of shell fish in their drink) I put some ice in a glass add vodka, Lea & Perrins, Tabasco and a squeeze of fresh lemon. Top off with Clamato, then sprinkle with Jane's Crazy Mixed up Salt.
  9. Honey Bunches of Oats, Blueberry Morning, Cranberry Almond Crunch, all with milk Oatmeal (Quaker Oldfashioned) with a little butter, cinnamon and maple syrup. A hasty Hasty Pudding with a little molasses In all cases, easy on the sweetener.
  10. I just drove past a McDonald's and they have a big sign that reads "Big Grilled HOT DOGS" Something new! Has anyone tried them yet?
  11. I am glad to find so many others who have watched the stock they spent hours developing gurgle down the drain. Maybe I won't feel so stupid next time.
  12. Split pea and ham soup. Couldn't stand it as a child. Now I love to make it and I use my mother's recipe, so the soup isn't different. I do believe that taste buds change as you age. That may be the reason for liking things you used to hate.
  13. My story begins about thirty years ago. I used to drive the family from Philly to Rehoboth Beach DE. We took Rte 202 to Wilmington since I 95 wasn't done in Philly yet. We used to pass a place called Jimmy John's. Never could figure out what it was. The about a year ago I saw a show on the Food Net about roadside dinning. The were telling us that this place called Jimmy John's had some of the best hot dogs in the country. I remembered that it was on Rte. 202, but I couldn't remember where. Then one day (it was months later) my wife and I were out for a drive and I decided to find Jimmy John's. I couldn't. The road was under constuction and I decided the place had been torn down. That show could have been years old anyway. The next day after the search (remember this is over a year since I saw the TV show) my wife and I were out for another drive. I made a right turn at a randomly selected street, and pulled up behind a dump truck stopped for a red light. On the truck was a bumper sticker that read "I brake for dogs at Jimmy Johns - West Chester PA" I couldn't believe it. All the time that had passed since the TV show and the day after our search I see this bumper sticker! To make a long story short (or shorter anyway) We did get to Jimmy John's for hot dogs. We think the best we ever had. You can get the details at Jimmy John's on Holly eats. com (he even has a picture of the bumper sticker)
