    corked champagne

i've never had a problem with champagne being corked. in fact, i've never actually heard of anyone complaining about it. last night was the first time. and it wasn't pleasant. pouring out a 10 dollar bottle of cote du rhone is one thing, but dumping a 40 dollar bottle of champagne quite another. has this every happened to anyone?
  3. what is this fear of photos?!?!?!! so what's the final tally? and who's showing up when? i will most likely be in the early crew (if there is one), arriving early and departing early. i'll leave the serious drinking to you brits.
  4. indeed it is. Livebait. good thing someone's memory is working.
  5. damn. and i was looking foward to calling you a "wuss"! and yes, those london cabbies are a fine bunch. even though ours was pulled over for speeding on my way to dinner. i think we were going to that seafood place. hmmm, the place looks like a bathroom. forget the name. over that bridge there. near that tall factory featured on the inside of Quadrophenia. oysters and crabs and such. damn this memory!
  6. jimmy's at 6?
  7. ok, i'll take a guess: ummmmm, not jewish?
  8. i often rave about I Trulli's (NYC) rabbit ragu. i suppose i'm not beyond reproach.
  9. i am of the mindset that really cute animals shouldn't necessarily be eaten. and this animal is reeeaaally cute.
  10. now now, that's a horrible analogy. unless, of course, she ate the rabbit. Regards, Analogy Police.
  11. england used to boast of having the greatest Navy in the world. now it seems it's all about being the greatest drinkers in the world. hey, everyone has to be good at *something*, right?
  12. it sounds like your guest was a bit more relaxed than you were. rudeness is never acceptable in my book. however, if you're being playful, and someone just doesn't "get it", there's not much that can be done. obviously i wasn't there and don't know the background of the relationship or the tone of the evening, so it's next to impossible to support either side. i have no problem with telling a friend that his food "sucks" if i don't like it. however, i wouldn't say this to a business associate's husband if i didn't know him well enough to know that he'd take it lightly. well, after a couple of drinks i might.
  13. i think the Red Eye Grill has a "private" room. food, price, noise, and number of twenty-somethings-on-expense-accounts are along the same lines of the blue water grill.

    Pizza Stone

oh she's staying in there alright. i think you're right about ovens coming with one. i'd gladly take a decent stone over the stupid pan you usually get (and never use).
  15. never, i mean *never*, buy furniture without a buzz.
  16. the best place to start this research would be at jimmy's at about 6 o'clock tonite. surely several pints would get the juices flowing.
  17. not for nuttin', but "the lower east side" was made up too. my uncle is so old that he remembers new amsterdam. actually, he's only about 42. he's been a cop in what i refer to as "the east village" and "alphabet city" for 20 years or so. he's seen things that he *wants* to forget!

    White Manna

and what highway would that be? i'll be driving up to MA soon and will probably be on that same road.

    Pizza Stone

i found out that the pizza stone does one helluva job on frozen pizzas too. wow!
  20. most (all?) of alphabet city used to be referred to as "the lower east side." at least, that's what my old uncles tell me.
  21. he looks more like a table to me. you look like tony soprano in a western. it's all very strange really.
  22. i didn't know there was an avenue d. is that somewhere in the east river?
  23. the horse place is just left of center (in the below picture) on the south side of the cross street. and tiger place is across the street, to the right. or maybe the other way around. Click me to see an example of "left and "right"
  24. hehe. that blind tiger is quite good. much better than that horse place, assuming the horse place is the one on the left side of the street and the tiger one is on the right. i always get them confused. tavern on jane has quite a good burger, no? isn't there a dive called barrow street pub on hudson at barrow? quite a nice little dive, with a pool table and dart board. roomy too. i suppose the stoned crow is filled with frat boys these days. so that's completely out.
  25. being beret-less, i shall be wearing no pants. if i come, i may even have "TCD", aka "The Critical Diner" in tow. TCD, however, will probably be wearing pants, although i doubt he'll have a beret. to review, i will be easily recognizable as the fellow wearing no pants, with no beret, and with TCD in tow. hope to see you then.
