  1. cucumber slices are notorious hangers on-ers. first i talk to them, and when that doesn't work, i push them off. stubborn little SOBs.
  2. i'm with you. i don't like lemon or lime in my flat water, or in my diet soda for that matter. however, i do appreciate a wedge in sparkling water.
  3. that's the way it goes in the on-line world. surely you can understand that. i don't think anyone thought you wouldn't stand by your opinion because of the sauce. it was a separate discussion.
  4. spanish and iberian places generally, for whatever reason, allow smoking at the tables. you *rarely* see this anywhere else. it seems to be part of the culture. as someone who has often enjoyed a cigarette after a meal, i can say that it's good for smokers. but it's pretty horrible overall.
  5. i wonder if we'll see bp around much more. i'm thinking not.
  6. i just can't believe they'd automatically sauce a steak. i'd send it back. i wonder how many others would? i like your new crackpot avatar. errr, jackpot.
  7. i don't even like paterson in the *day*. hey, what kind of sauce do they put on the steak? that sounds very strange indeed.
  8. absolutely. it does things even a small food processor can't. you can avoid paste if you don't pulse for long. or you can make paste if you do pulse for long.

    Cosi

cosi took over manhattan about 4 yrs ago. they are as ubiquitous as starbucks at this point. as far as their sandwiches go, i think they offer some interesting ingredients. and you get to choose everything that goes on. however, that bread, to me, is too hard and too much over all. personally i'd prefer their fillings on a light baguette. but then again, i'm just great.
  10. WOW. amazon has the second one for 15 bucks. i can assure anyone who minces a lot of ginger or lemongrass that this would be the best 15 bucks you'd ever spend.
  11. it's the second one dave. thanks. i was banging my head against the wall trying to remember what brand it was so i could post a pic.
  12. i'm not sure what it's called, but it's definitely not a coffee grinder. it has a blade that spins around at about 1,000,000 RPM, totally destroying anything in its path.
  13. i use a spice grinder for garlic and ginger. takes about 2 seconds.
  14. never trust a noun that pretends to be a verb. that's what i always say.
  15. there're more than that rosie! favorites in ridgewood: malee thai, sakae japanese. also, the village green cafe seems to have some promise. i had a pretty good meal there last week. my fish was horrible, but the rest of the meal was spot on.
  16. "my cup of tea," in allendale, comes highly recommended by "me." and i'm a very important person. asiain/pan-asain byob.
  17. you were never asked.[
  18. sounds like my kind of place. and "radar love," of course, is one of my favorite air guitar 2 am at the pub songs.
  19. eff me, i've got neighbors like that. those freakin "icicles" that became popular about 4 years ago seemed to give even the most reasonable people and businesses carte blanche regarding leaving holiday decorations up all year. what gives?
  20. that's pretty much the only time i don't feel "right" in a bar...when i think that someone (or everyone for that matter) wants to kick my ass. if that's the case, it's probably not a very good place to begin with. and the skinheads these days, they don't want to listen to me when i tell them that i was a "punk" before their mommy had her first piercing. they just don't want to hear that at all.
  21. hence my idea of "your favorite bartender." i figure if someone, say, "mr. z", mentions a place and their favorite barman "johnny", i'll simply go to that bar and say "hey, i'm good friends with mr. z, how are you johnny." and i'll get decent service.
  22. i think the negative connotation associated with "dive bar" may be misleading. personally, i love a good dive bar, more than a "yuppie" bar that is serving 8 dollar Buds. the bellevue in NYC on 9th ave comes to mind, which is a fav of tony bourdain if i recall. it's dark, dank, and i'm not sure how clean the mugs are. but it has a great crowd usually, and some of the most interesting folks in the world. much interesting than the people you'd meet at Heartland Brewery for example. would i take my mom there? probably not. i suppose that's a good barometer of sorts: if i like it a lot, but i wouldn't take my mom there, it's probably considered a "dive." otherwise, you'd be hard-pressed to find a bar so seedy that i'd feel uncomfortable enough to leave. hell, look at the way i dress.
  23. the holland. wilfrid, you're the only person that i know who has a degree in advanced "learning" that goes there. even *i* don't go there. however, we are clearly on the same page, as i was just about to start a thread of "your favorite NYC bartenders." which, i shall do...at some point.
  24. hell, you'd probably just walk on on the bill. and why not.
