  1. i'll be there as well. i'm currently brewing my second batch of homebrew with sbcase. we'll be looking around for ideas and recipes and ingredients!
  2. i really dislike that place for a few reasons. they wouldn't let me modify their preset selections for one thing. they throw a bunch of slop (it is tasty, i'll give you that) into a tortilla and just smoosh it into a sloppy ball and wrap it up in foil, making it impossible to eat. and it's some ridiculous charge for guacamole, like 2.00 for a dollop. it tastes good yes, but i think they charge way too much for what you get (which is a sloppy mess)
  3. Cafe Diem: Pho Dac Biet: i think it's about 8$ and you get two meals out of it. same with the Bun Bo Hue (thanks dagordon) it's on 8th just above washington. vic sushi is very inexpensive. sansom between 21 and 20
  4. Last time i was there i saw only about 4 vendors.
  5. yeah scott case and i want to go soon. i have to take out the guy that i threw under the bus at osteria. :\
  6. there are a few new mexican shops opening up here on south 9th. one is a bakery and there's at least one new restaurant as well. i'll post back when i check them out. it's just so hard to not go to Taquitos de Puebla...
  7. We went to Osteria a few days ago. I had just been through a terrible day at work and was in a horrible mood. We had a wonderful time and loved the food so much that when we left we were on top of the world.
  8. sounds like my kind of place. i'll be expecting a call next time.
  9. and it's RIGHT across the street from where i WOOOOOORK!!!
  10. Not sure where to post this, but I just wanted to see what people thought of Vic Sushi, on Sansom between 20 and 21st. Fresh, friendly, inexpensive was my experience. Not a lot of variety but I believe the tamago is homemade, which is always nice (it was darker and more textured than the prepackaged kind).
  11. When I first moved to the city a couple of years ago I started work at Washington Square. It's a nice space but I've never really loved the food there. I believe it's closing soon and re-opening as a different restaurant (though this rumor has been around since I started there two years ago). My only experience eating at Continental Old City has been waiting 45 minutes for a to-go Mid-Rare burger that ended up Well. I just never gave it a second chance. Jones has some good cocktails, but the food was bland an unexciting (which I suppose is the point). I've liked a lot of food that I've had at El Vez but the bar always has a bad smell; it's what I'd imagine years and years of margarita spilled behind things would smell like. I worked at Pod for a little while too. It's a well-run place, the food is good. Meh. I've eaten at Buddakan once or twice. It's a well-run place, the food is good. Meh. I've eaten at Alma de Cuba a bit. It's a well-run place, the food is good. Meh. I've never sprung for the full experience at any of the higher-end places because I (well, with the exception of Morimoto) am just not that interested. I hope Parc does it right because besides tasting menus and Japanese, I'll only go all-out on good French. I can make a pretty good steak myself, so no Barclay. I can't cook fish at all, but I know some places that I'd rather go to than Striped Bass. I live by some really really cheap and really really tasty Mexican, so no need for El Vez. I guess I only really go to them for drinks!
  12. Did you have the Fall-theme tasting menu? I just had that and it was superb. There was a sardine with beats, a cod dish that was wonderful (i think it had spinach and bacon), a foie stuffed quail (all of these first three paired with a Spatlese) and then a lamb dish that was very stew-like but more delicate and tender than any stew I've ever had (Chateauneuf de Pape).
  13. !!! I feel so at home in this thread. Because I can freely admit that I've got a problem. Baked up another one last night, had seconds tonight, and I'll finish it off tomorrow. I got my roommate hooked on them too. Is that bad? The place is about an hour north. Does anybody have a deep freezer we can use to stock up?
  14. and the little one's little world? can caroline type yet?
  15. I know there are already a couple of threads dedicated to Chinatown discussion, but I'd like to get succinct here. it would be nice if we could have a series of lists, one by each person, no repetition if possible, of the must-haves in Chinatown. I'm planning on multiple week-long outings where I sample one or two dishes in each place (I've already talked to a bunch of you about this!) And it doesn't matter if I've already been to a place, I'll go back for stuff I haven't tried. I'd like to try to find a consensus on the killer dim sum joint as well. So here's some stuff I've already chowed on: 1. Four Rivers - House Special Sweet Ham 2. Nan Zhou - Everything (or rather, anything with noodles in it) 3. Shiao Lan Kung - Crispy Dumplings 4. Szechuan Tasty House - Golden Coins 5. Chung King Garden - Cold Noodles, Allium Dumplings 6. Lakeside - Almond Bubble Tea 7. David's Mail Lai Wah - Scallion Sauce 8. New Harmony Bakery - Thousand Year Egg pastry Stuff I want to chow on: 1. David's Mai Lai Wah - Salt and Pepper Squid 2. Four Rivers - Thousand Year Egg/Squid dish So that's it, one person, one list. I'm planning this for next week. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! EDIT: Tim, thanks, I already know about those other posts. Just looking for a list, 1 per person, of people's favorites. No, philadining, it does not have to be just five! I'm looking for a thread to be just lists, not the normal back and forth. It will be a concise resource!
  16. Good thing you have coin, as they don't take plastic.
  17. It's a big menu. But there's a lot of repetitive items. I would never go to an italian restaurant that's this style (not my speed) unless there's a big group of people and we're going to have a party. In that case I think it might be a blast. Apps: Sauteed Rabe 7 Steamed Mussels 9 Stuffed Clams (crab, lobster, shrimp, scallops) 8 Garlic Bread 4 Steamed Clams 10 Bruschetta Romano (tom, oil, garlic, basil, romano cheese) 6 Salad: Shanks (special dressing) 4 or 7 (for 1 or 2 ppl) Frankie's Italian Antipasto (roasted peppers, prosciutto, salami, chokes, black olives, sundried tomatoes, share cheese and wet mozz over romaine, bals vin. and olive oil) 12 Pasta: Fett Alfredo 11 Special Fett in a Rose'Wine (sic) Sauce 13 Pan Fried Ziti 14 Tortellini Milano 19 Putanesca 13 Linguine Dominic (rabe and sundried tom) 13 Penne Calabrese 11 Linguini with Mussels 11 Linguini with clams 13 Shrimp Fra Diablo 18 Shrimp Marinara 18 Shrimp Scampi 18 Shrimp w/oil and Garlic 18 Lobster Scampi 25 Lobster Fra Diablo 26 Veal: Ala Perri, Dominic, Sicilian, Marsala, Piccante, Francaise, Parmigiana all 23 Chicken Italiano, Sicilian, Marsala, Neopolitan, Fracaise (sic), Piccante, Parmigiana all 15 or 16 Chef's Specialties For 24$: Seafood Neptune (shrimp, lobo, crab, scallops, clams, mussles, fettucine, cream sauce) Cioppino (shrimp, lobo, crabmeat, scallops, clams, mussels, linguini, Mediterranean sauce) Seafood pescatore (shrimp, lobo, crab, scallops, clams, mussles, linguini, marinara) Shrimp and Scallops (Sauteed with sundried tom, mushrooms, broccoli, over penne) Chick and Lobster Tuscani (brazilian lobo tails?, broccoli and shrooms in madeira) Scallops and Littlenecks (sundried tom, broccoli and shrooms, penne) 22 Steak Frankie's Way (filet medallions, roasted peppers, onions, shrooms, tom, demi-cognac) 27 Veal & Shrimp Abruzzi (shrooms, b asil, parsley, garlic, white wine sauce) 19 Chicken and Shrimp Calabrese (hot seeded pepers, shrooms, basil, parsley, garlic, white wine sauce) 19
  18. it's Giambotti, i think, and it's a huge omelette with most everything in it. it starts off with peppers and onions, sausage, this, that, the other, and then at the end about 5 eggs are cracked over it. it feeds 2-4.
  19. Zio's on 13th between walnut and chestnut is pretty good, as is Top Tomato, just down Walnut on 11th. I still love Gay Pizza, right across from Woody's (13th between Walnut and Locust). It's got a thin but crispy crust with a nice honkin chewy outer crust, always fresh (because there's so much traffic in and out of the joint) and especially at 2AM until close. Great BBQ chicken slice as well. I've only had Slice one time (it's down at 1180 S 10th St, Philadelphia 19147 At Annin St ) but it's delicious. More gourmet-style than any of the above. And Layla, I just had my first Papa John's. DO NOT WANT!
  20. have you tried it, or just assuming it is good? ← i haven't tried it and i'm assuming it's good. sbcase might be able to weigh in on this one...
  21. i am pretty sure that dibruno pronto also has a meatball sub.
  22. thanks Sandy. According to Holly, the chef (the son) has done this before and has skills. it's two blocks from my apartment so i'll be going there soon.
  23. I've just ventured out of the Pennsylvania forums and spotted this thread. I'd like to throw a bone (figuratively of course) to Philadelphia's fantastic Horizons restaurant. It's the best vegan food I've ever tasted. It's well above 95% of the restaurants in the city as well. Philly's (arguably) most notable critic also rated it 4 Bells (our top honor for restaurants). http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showto...886&hl=horizons
  24. i know this is quotes as a whisky glass, but this might be a great tasting glass. it's very similar to the one that you see michael jackson sipping from in the beginning of his scotch books: http://www.wilsonandmorgan.com/pagina.asp?...a=24&sottopag=0
  25. Duchesse de Bourgogne edit: thanks for the link bshapiro! i didn't think they would have such a big operation.
