I did hesitate to offer that possible distinction. But the phrase "meet at the coffee shop" way way pre-dating CharBucks was fairly equivalent to diner in my Southern California experience. Lots of cheap hot coffee and a standard menu to fill the empty spaces - gastonomically and emotionally. I am interested to hear/read other experiences.

Might not be enough fat for carnitas - though fat level varies. - in my experience less connective tissue to break down than ribs. But....give be pork bitt any day

I still have not done this https://food52.com/recipes/8011-roasted-cheese-pumpkin I do have a can of pumpkin (large) and could use half in a sweet treat for very helpful gardener and rest in a soup with coconut milk, garlic (vampires be gone), and an aging hunk of brie + some home made whole wheat bread in freezer to dip. Sounds like a plan. Only appropriate fresh herb I have is rosemary (she is currently enjoying the gentle rain)

This classic down the road was special to is http://blogs.dailybreeze.com/history/2017/07/07/the-parasol-restaurant-delighted-torrance-diners-from-the-outside-in/ Line drawing always troubling - coffee shop v. diner?

Serious Eats re-published an Ed Levine essay on diners today and it got me thinking. https://www.seriouseats.com/ed-levine-why-diners-are-more-important-than-ever I'll share a few of mine. As Ed noted - they are an essential part of our culture. The equivalent of the corner bar to most 12 Steppers in recovery. Long hours, no pressure to move along, and where staff, regulars and friends know one another, "Cheers" via coffee shop. As a longtime local independent place I'll shout out. Hot n' Tot down the road. https://www.thehotntot.com/ It has that feel of community. Aussie side of fmily always insists on at least one breakfast there per visit. They paid the somewhat high price for for one of their heavy coffee mugs. High probably cuz not so nice people smuggle them out. I include Denny's and Norm's chains as they have that same feel and decent food. Norm's just did a 72 cent breakfast special on their 72nd anniversary. My son and friends hung out their often. - "meet me at Norm's"' They enjoy all kinds of food but Norm's is where they can hang. You can go any time of day and see the old guys hanging out, flirting with staff, and drinking bottomless cups of coffee. L.A. has lots f long time diners so I won't attempt a re-cap. Googie architecture def. You guys?

Ha with Covid did that not become a thing - 24/7 pjs or a button down shirt on top, pj/yoga pants for Zoom. . I like variety so I mix and match foods. Clothes well Betsey Johnson. Anne Klein, and Kenzo were my mentors.

I think your playing skills are just fine; plating well I prefer taste over styling. Quite a special meal!

There is a scene in the film Bottle Shock where the vintner uses a sword to open his chardonnay

Might work here as we spend mega amount on our pets; but also might get the pet food police going as nutritionally supect...

Congrats. Nice effort by your guy. And Freixenet is under rated as a fun celebration wine in my book.

Thanks so much for your write-up. I've heard good things about Congregation coffee so may order. I'm a fan of the chicory blends.

Down here/over here I think we started cringing at Rachel Ray's "samie" - to avoid googling for y'all the other reference that is not "cool" https://torontoist.com/2014/01/historicist-banning-little-black-sambo/

I think it was @paulraphael who brought up a pet peeve and a good concern. One - the damn glass window - hard to clean (my Bosch is 2 layers and aerosolized whatever gets in there. Useless as any cooking update. Why?? Two - small pans falling through grates - who'd have thought but I've cooked on nice stoves and had to micromanage location of pot to avoid tilt.

Produce focus in Los Angeles outside of Farmers' Markets?
heidih replied to a topic in California: Cooking & Baking
I've lived here all my life and am not aware of a brick & mortar that fits your quest. I'm in L.A. South Bay so Torrance FM and PV are mine. A lot of the same farmers. When I was more mobile I did the dance to various markets as you note and found it enjoyable. As a young cook in grad school Friday was my "no classes - go to Grand Central" downtown - but that has been hyper gentrified. I had a client with offices at the produce market downtown but I never explored if that was an option for retail purchase like the downtown flower mart. -
Exactly. I serendipitously had the same range oven in the last house I sold and then the cottage I rented. Gas. 4 burners - 2 medium, 1 high output, and a low simmer. But the model surely no longer made. Whenever this comes up I think back to a show Ken Hom did cooking with his mom in her miniscule 1 or 2 burner kitchen in Hong Kong making her specialties. For baking - yes consistency is important. You begin a dance with your oven and develop a relationship.

What a legacy at a young age.

Isn't that a pisser. I keep my bread in non functional Bosch microwave and every once in a while, not often, a mold spore lands. Really throws plans off.

And did you? My old post https://forums.egullet.org/topic/80385-baked-alaska-questions/?do=findComment&comment=2274272

Soup looks comforting. In your area how easy is it to get veal shank and at what price. Here it usually special request and expensive so I'd do it maybe only for osso buco. Maybe it is partly due to the L.A. anti veal mindset.

Has everyone forgotten that the now dead Kardashian dad was OJ Simpson's attorney and there was talk of him hiding evidence? I don't get celebrity status culture... From Wiki Kardashian was the man seen carrying Simpson's garment bag the day that Simpson flew back from Chicago. Prosecutors speculated that the bag may have contained Simpson's bloody clothes or the murder weapon. Back to celebrations ---

The topic title says "no reason" but I think there is always a trigger. Another one for son and I was finding really plump lychee. Into a big bowl with ice & water and popping them and slurping them. Another some may relate to is the first day the ice cream truck comes down the street with its classic tune and oh the decisions - which one as the first one. And the first fish caught ever that nobody else in the beach rental would participate in. I cleaned and grilled simply - just off a pier in Morro Bay but sweet and special. One must celebrate the kid's first catch.
