  1. As to taking up space, the one I have and showed has a small footprint and as I said lives in the garage on a not used workbench. I toast, re-crisp, sometimes roast a few odd bones for quick stock or some root vegetables.. Works for me but I am not space challenged. Cheese toast it does beautifully.
  2. Your apples & onions makes way more sense than my spinach. Guess I had spanakopita on the brain.
  3. Candy corn and now kid cereal! Trending/sweet nostalgia/comfort ? Stepmom handed me a container of nut mix. Oddly has a couple bits of dried pineapple, lots of pepitas and almonds. I think she picked out the elements she liked and this was left. Re-roasting at 350 to get them bit darker. Size differential leads to a bit of bitter but I edo bitterweet
  4. I did once tuck it into phyllo triangles with spinach when the frozen dough kept falling out of the freezer and the larder was kind of bare.
  5. I also got bored and did not have any stock on an "I need soup" day. I sort of melted it into some broth made with powder as an enrichment. I enjoyed the soup. I've had some that is soft like liverwurst and some that is sliceable. The former as quenelles in soup, the latter sauteed like people fry up bologna.

    Dinner 2021

Mussels look small but nicely plump. I like the plates but bit blindingly busy with the food on them. They would look good with your lovely kitchen. That image is hugely displayed in my Kroger market with the Mexican beers. Dia de Lod Muertos theming I guess.
  7. Been through a few but they were all "found" in the garage so who knows their life story. With your GF on that mechanical timer clicking away. Finally they all died so I used AMEX points and free Prime and got this little job. Lives in garage on workbench and works just simply as needed. $25 or so but I paid zero.
  8. Well if that is your low energy cookie icing - I bow in awe. I like the sound of your oat crumble on the banana brad but thinking it for my upcoming pumpkin bread. Thanks.
  9. I see them at the diners and at Denny's in particular. I've commented to the waitresses and they love serving them - despite the $1 under the coffee cup tip. I wish my dad had cultivated something like that. In retrospect on my post re Ship's above it was the lack of the feeling of belonging that probably made the visits not memorable. And veering once again away from diners - I think of the donut shops that also have the regular crowd (men) every morning over coffee solving world problems + donuts. There is one on the Pacific Coast Highway where if a guy does not show up they text to make sure he is still kickin. An attractive female friend used to walk past with her pup every morning and sit for a bit - kinda made their day. Outdoor seating.
  10. I know I ate at at least 2 of the Ships several times yet have no recollection of the toasters or the food. Must have been in my "do not eat heartily in front of males" phase. Pre GPS at least you could see them from far away as they were/are on busy streets. Like Randy's giant donut topped shops.
  11. Forgot about that . Of the ones I mentioned out here only Dale's had that. Perhaps we were memorable because my bestie ad her sis would break out into song with the selection. And then we have Ed Devebic's - SO annoying but I try to accommodate my friend's tastes on occasion https://www.eddebevics.com/abou
  12. Sorry about that. The one near me as a kid was a destination for families, freeway close, and enjoyed. Ice cram not a scar and I like ice cream. Different locations, and different experiences. The welcoming and always open atmosphere was similar to diners as were the servers.
  13. And just to bust it open mre - Howard Jihnsons https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Johnson's where Jacques Pepin had a hand in https://firstwefeast.com/eat/2015/08/jacques-pepin-career-changing-dishes
  14. That is why I included Norms and Dennys. Same feeling. And what about lunch counters - a thing of the past. But we talked about them once here. My sister worked the griddle at JJ Newberry. and I spent many a happy moment at a different one shsring fries and talking about "life" with teen girlfriends. The fries that define the experience for you. Anthony Bourdain & Sean Brock at waffle house

    Persimmons

You are way too classy for me, I do not peel. Just cut and eat. They have - to me - the fragrance and taste what some consider "pumpkin pie spice". I have trees but the animals always beat me to it so have to go Farmers Market.

    Persimmons

Kind of like when your IT guy says "did you unplug wait and re-plug?" Cut into one and see. They are the firm ones so should be sweet & crunchy.
  17. OMG how did they keep those from being filched?! I can sense collectors twitching.
  18. Most of mine don't do booze. Then again the downtown Burger King in a high rise tried beer - until the bike messengers figured it out. To me "diner" = coffee in a heavy mug so it stays hot while you engage in earth changing discussions and solve world problems. And they don't give you a look when you ask for mayo or Ranch with your fries or rings

    Dinner 2021

I had a good knife. Husband said "why are you doing this? - then he ate it with a smile and hhmmm groanlets. He did do the dishes
  20. I shudder to think how much produce is possibly going bad on the big cargo ships stuck off shore. My usual is Ralphs (Kroger). I go around 7:30 am so few customers but that is when they stock. There were few things missing the other day but they may have been on the loading dock. Overall no gaps. Produce excellent stock. They have this odd big bin now near one entrance that has small sizes of things like crackers, cereal, peanut butter - huh? Emergency supplies? I forgot to do recon on turkeys - will ask butchers next time.

    Dinner 2021

Ha! It wasn't cheap back in '81 or so but I lived near the upscale part of South Pasadena so the butchers stocked it. Ya know for those "ladies who take cooking classes". I was a grad student who got to play in their wonderful shops. First encounter with some not so great canned truffle! Got me interested. Balanced the cost with cows feet at Latin market on other side of town

    Dinner 2021

Ha if you really want a challenge attempt Julia's stuffed veal breast! Delicious, but once was enough.
  23. I did not try to define "diner" in my opening post but the link to Serious Eats I posted there gives a pretty good summary - though tad East Coast to me. If anyone has ever watched Hallmark movies (no need to confess here) - the diner is the heart of every small town depicted. Even in this large metropolis I've often run into acquaintances in various locations. Often hearty breakfast all day, burgers/fries/shakes and bottomless coffee. I tend to have standard orders at my favorites: spinach and mushroom omlette w/ dry rye and Smuckers orange marmalade + their house salsa at Hot n' Tot, Cajun Burger and wonderfully crisp onion rings at Dale's. At The Kettle depends if headed to or from LAX. Bit pricey but a beloved place. http://thekettle.net/ Memorable venture there was in friend's husband's limo (he owned the service - cut down on his "driving while intoxicated") Champagne to and from w/ tons of coffee inside and some eggs and toast combo.
  24. Oh and the waitresses also remembered that she liked extra ice for her tea - they would bring her in that stainess shake cup for her iced tea - even if we skipped a month due to weather or circumstance.
  25. My girlfriends and I used to frequent a diner after the monthly Vintage Flea Market . No "hon" but the waitresses in the requisite outfits always remembered us. One was owner's daughter, and others her high school friends.. They knew my bestie was fanatic about "the good napkins" and always brought us a stack. Also cool with me going to the service station and collecting up the hot sauces I liked when they were busy. The counter and shake machine - classic. https://www.facebook.com/dalesdinerlb/
