  1. I've eaten often at Salad King and I tend to get the Thai Islam Noodle or Seafood fried rice. I try to think of other things I want to eat off their menu, but I always return to these staples...!
  2. Glad you had a good meal, Kerry! I find Mengrai very welcoming. Linda has now moved to Don Mills Centre at Lawrence and Don Mills. The upper space of Salad King will just take the overflow from the downstairs room now at their downtown Gould st. location. The thai resto featured in Toronto Life this month is Mong-Kut Thai Gold on the Danforth.
  3. Try Mengrai Thai. Should fit the bill. http://www.mengraithai.com/ Here are my photosets the last two times I went. One of them has menu shots. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jlunar/sets/72157612983958195/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/jlunar/sets/72157607973643770/
  4. I quite liked the Duck in a Can! Our Poutine was lackluster, but we can attribute that to the fact that it was a half portion or something. The Tomato Tarte is wonderful. We've since tried (with some success) to replicate it in our kitchen. I also very much liked the Tarte de l'Erable (for two). Their pastry is phenomenally good. 5. I'm sure we saw you, (and I think you, us)! I really did enjoy the beans and duck... so tasty.
  6. Did you go in the morning? We were at the bar starting at 11:30. It was a lot of food for two and I really enjoyed the experience as a whole. Anyway, photos are up! http://www.flickr.com/photos/jlunar/sets/72157615955150180/ ... almost done them all. Just need to finish with Jean-Talon and post-trip sugar.
  7. lots of fun at the Cabane, I felt it's worth going, especially to try some more traditional dishes (we got pea soup and tourtière today). Will let you know when I've written and uploaded photos. Got most of the trip up on flickr, just missing Joe Beef and APdC:CaS
  8. Leaving for Cabane shortly... looking forward to checking it all out. Heading to Banquise later this afternoon to cap off our trip.
  9. I did a double-check on my res tomorrow too. Seems to be a-ok!
  10. Just fyi, Cabane just updated their website! http://www.cabaneasucreaupieddecochon.com/
  11. Violet - if you go at the end of the month, I may be able to update you on our various eats! until then, you've eaten more extensively than I. Cabane keeps shifting its date. I think I have a res, but they didn't confirm it, exactly. Just asked me for my cell phone. I think it's okay... O_O
  12. We're debating if we should rent a car and hit up Cabane... Waiting to hear if it's worth the effort!
  13. p.s. Just over two weeks to go for me. Am considering going to Cabane a Sucre... and any last minute thoughts anyone?
  14. Thanks everyone for your advice! I'll report back with photos after my trip. I think we have a good handle on what/where we're eating.
  15. Yes, I think I had made a note to stop by to Chloe's before APdC, but was unsure of the wisdom of that, given the food-coma effect of APdC's dishes...! Thanks for the reminder Lesley - that makes it on to the "don't miss" list then.
  16. *crosses off Restaurant Bazaar* (Thanks rcianci) I've added Club Chasse et Peche and Kouign Aman (purplechick, that's going to be bad for me... but then again, I'm already set to go to APdC, so what am I saying!?) to the lineup. Also dropping Pain D'oree as a separate stop. (Thanks winemaker!) I'm really looking forward to trying out Mahrouse, despite how far it is. My favourite Middle-Eastern pastry, Swar from Royal Patisserie, their chef in Toronto apprenticed for 17 years under Mahrouse in Montreal, so I'm curious to compare!
  17. After doing some research, here are the restaurants/patisseries/places that we'd like to hit when we visit Montreal (in March). Anyone have any additions/subtractions? Want to make sure we're not missing anything or making time for something we shouldn't...! I guess the one thing I had trouble finding was a "traditional" quebecois resto - Chasse et Peche was listed as that, but I haven't read anything on it recently... or if it was waaaay off base. Suggestions welcome! the new Omi

More shots here, though same dishes. I really liked the bimbimbap as well. The salmon was particularly creamy and tasty, as was the sweet scallop on our sashimi dish. Also enjoyed the pork belly. Nice starter. Not sure about the creamy miso soup, it wasn't bad and suited the cold weather, (heartier than normal clear miso), but I could take it or leave it. And I totally miss the bar seating, though the familiar music piping though was a nice comfort.

I'm told by my friend that "There is none" She does mention that your best bets are the two you mentioned...
  20. I actually didn't like the Bouchon brownie thing. The sticky bun was phenomenal though!
  21. Toronto's always got something going on, but I find the food community less hmn.. involved, than their west-coast counterparts. I mean, it's usually dead in the Toronto forum, and I'd say I should post way more.. but I don't. It's odd. I should make more of an effort...!
  22. Awesome read. And yes, that feeling of food coma at the end... ahhhh.... BUT I ATE EVERY LAST BIT... ...except the chocolates. I saved those for later. And the cookies. T_T so tasty. I miss them. p.s. on reservations, try opentable.com at around 10am PST as well, two months exactly to the day. And keep trying. They release those tables manually everyday, so it's a bit of a toss up. I snagged mine online at 10:15 PST or so, and it was a 4-top. I literally ran back from a meeting that went a bit long in a bit of a panic. Euphoria is the best descriptor of how I felt when I got the confirmation.

    Napa Dining

Ugh. Gotta go back soon. So many places to try! Did TFL (superb) Auberge Du Soleil (also fantastic) and Bouchon. Went to Barber's Q and found it quite nice and casual. Photos http://www.flickr.com/photos/jlunar/sets/72157603871628411/ and there's the whole pile from the other restos I mentioned if you look. I'm just being lazy.
  24. just adding my experience to the thread. I know, it's an old one. I had a really good time at Elemental. Got to sit at the bar and have a view of the "kitchen" and bug Laurie about food. There's something really pleasant and comforting about the food. I found the dishes to be quite good, one of them excellent, and while I'm not a wine person, the pairings were generous and yummy. Just really simple and strong dishes - which is really nice to have. I think for the money and experience, it's an awesome place to be. I attended with my sister and my 7 yr old niece and they were quite accommodating. photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jlunar/sets/72157606659944477/
  25. Okay, well here are some visual tours: Tilth http://www.flickr.com/photos/jlunar/sets/72157606643405187/ Went for lunch, some really nice dishes, some better value than others. Really loved the house-made pasta, (but had lowest value), and it's nice that it's all local/organic. Rover's http://www.flickr.com/photos/jlunar/sets/72157606643405189/ Great classic French. Sauces are awesome, plating is really nice too. Recommend getting the house specialty of the Egg and caviar. Nom nom nom. Havest Vine http://www.flickr.com/photos/jlunar/sets/72157606695526280/ Didn't have too much. Tapas style. What I did have was nice, but I'm not sure I'd be back there right away. Really enjoyed the Salted Caramel Ice Cream. But I'm a sucker for that. Elemental http://www.flickr.com/photos/jlunar/sets/72157606659944477/ Had a great time. Got to sit at the bar overlooking the kitchen, (perfect spot!), and enjoyed the simple, but well-prepped food. Great value. Salumi http://www.flickr.com/photos/jlunar/sets/72157606642493203/ Had a nice late afternoon snack of salami and bread and olives. Great with wine. Wish I had sat at the shared table... Tasty and fun visit. Very casual, of course.
