When you dine out with your sister does she look online for sites that provide her with this type of information or does she call ahead or just show the card and most places accomodate her? My sister has a severe dairy foods allergy. She's made up a card that she shows at restaurants when she's traveling. I think she even had it translated into German for a trip to Germany. It makes things much easier in restaurants because she can communicate her dietary needs without any misunderstandings. ←

Thanks for the feedback.

Did you have to pay for your card through a non profit organization or did you create your card yourself? yep, I can only eat pureed foods, which limits our range of resturaunts as we have to call ahead and see if there will be anything I can have. I have a card explaining my needs. ←

Your right but if you were a restaurant owner it would be something that would come under the generalized definition of "special dietary need that would require menu modification". Eh? The first 5 items and the last 2 items on your list would fit your definition above. But since when is religious requirements or plain veg*an preference (for religious or other reasons) a "condition" or a "dietary handicap"? Milagai ←

here is another great link: http://www.bccdc.org/division.php?item=7

That seems to be another issue the accuracy of the person and the menu modification. Are the patrons just being "picky" versus they really can't due to illness have the item that they wish to be modified. Maybe a card for "picky" eaters might be necessary also?
-
So since we have a great definition and an anology. I ask the question would restaurants benefit from receiving a "special dietary needs" card that lists the information of what the patron can and cannot have? Would this make the process of dealing with this issue easier?
-
good analogy, how many friends to you know with a "dietary handicap"?
-
An excellent defintion, so based on that how many diners in the general population would this cover... 33%?? if so then would that mean that 1 in 3 diners ask for a change to the presented menu on any given day? Is it less or more? is this a regional occurence?

As you know I suffer from Crohn's Disease and have to be on a low fibre diet and have a special dietary need. When others hear the term do they think allergies right away or do they think diseases such as diabetes. What does the Egullet community feel about diners with these needs? kevfoodvan

Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 2)
kevfoodvan replied to a topic in Western Canada: Dining
Last three places eaten: 1) Earls Paramount: Nice location, food and service is consistent throughout the chain. No problems with ordering due to special dietary need. 2) Boston Pizza in Burnaby: For lunch a small two topping pizza, again playing it safe. Decent food and service. 3) Today: Vera's Burger Shack on Cornwall: Excellent service in regards to special dietary needs, nice location and tasty burger. Definitely will be back. It's kind of like, a Chinese restaurant where they cater to more of a Western taste. Anyways, that's what I was thinking when I was eating there. Anyways this JangMoJib was on Robson, where there's a lot of Korean restaurants. I was considering going to the "hole in the wall" one on Denman. I didn't really like their bbq bulgogi. They don't do the grill it yourself, so it comes out on a sizzling plate. I didn't like how they paired the veggies up with the beef. I had the Galbi the time before that and that was pretty good. I also had their tofu soup (deong gang / miso flavoured) and I liked it. I did not like their seafood tofu soup. I haven't tried any Korean restaurants in Richmond. I've only gone to ones on Kingsway, Coquitlam and Downtown. Last Three places eaten: Joey's (Coquitlam), It was alright. My friends loved it. I wasn't crazy about the food but their crab dip was certainly interesting. I had the burger and also shared the chocolate souflee. I had their green salad with dried cranberries (replaced the fries with that) and I enjoyed that a lot. Some of their lettuce weren't cut small enough I thought. All in all, the salad was very tasty and I was happy that I chose it instead of my regular choice of Caesar. The burger and soufle were highly recommended but I was a bit disappointed. The dessert seemed a bit overdone (it was crispy); it was kind of a lava cake instead of your usual puffy choclatey goodness. My friends had the ribs and the maple glazed salmon. The salmon was very good and ribs were good. Forgot my other two: Coquitlam: Insadong: it was quite good. I posted about this in the Korean Galbi thread. I would definitely go back with 4-5 people and order a combo A for BBQ. Borandsi: A nice cafe with BBT and board games ($3.50 per person per hour). I had the Pat Bing Soo (Korean red bean ice) for Five dollars. YUM! http://vanshops.com/category/category_view...dx=26509&page=1 ← -

Although you say you prefer Yaletown. Why not out to Harrison Hot Springs Resort and Spa for dinner and dancing in the Copper Room, followed by a dip in the hot springs pools. Make it a weekend event for everyone.

Since I am the "special dietary need" guy who runs www.foodvancouver.com who has been on a low fibre diet for 15 years. I would start with a bag of popcorn from 5th Avenue Cinemas then it would be a red BC delicious apple, assorted other vegetables and fruit eaten by hand from Granville Island. To top it off a Dairy Queen peanut buster parfait with extra roasted nuts. It is the simple pleasure of biting into an apple, eating a bag of popcorn and having my favourite desert with nuts that would be the best memory to have the last meal with.
