  1. Masking tape works fine. It comes in several widths and is carried everywhere.
  2. Get some tea tree oil at the health food store and put a touch on some cotton balls. Put the cotton balls in the cupboards and drawers where these moths are showing up and wait to see their corpses. FYI, tea tree oil smells like medicine and isn't healthy for your pets, although it will kill off their fleas if you dilute it in their bath water. Just don't let them lap it up, which is doubtful since it tastes terrible. If you have winged insects in the house, check to make sure you don't have termites. We just went through that and it was expensive.
  3. If the corn was sent to Africa, then yes, a very complicated issue especially when dealing with the local middle-men who may very well resell it elsewhere or sell it and then let it sit there and spoil rather than truck it out. Humanitarian aid comes with a cost to the grower and it may be that the agreement was to give/sell the corn pending agreement to later arrangements for trade. Africa is difficult to deal with and not very transparent in its dealings. The reason I am asking about GMOs and their ill effects or not is that there seems to be no information that isn't hysterical in the NO WAY! direction or BFD in the industry direction. I'd like to learn something that is honest in a cost/benefit analysis. There are unknowns with all new technology, from vaccines to surgical techniques. It doesn't make them bad or taboo until all the wrinkles are ironed out. If people can be fed more cheaply through greater crop yield using GMO technology and persons like yourself can continue to cultivate heirlooms and Farmer Bob can continue to grow his soybean, corn or wheat, then what's the harm in trying? We've been using GMO seeds for a decade. It's time for a longitudinal study.
  4. Okay. I was under the impression that we exported rice to these countries as a food and as a grass-seed to be planted.
  5. Oh, I agree. I don't begrudge restaurants for charging top dollar for Key lime pie.
  6. Hmm. Maybe they're on vacation?
  7. I read a lot of complaining about GMOs here. If one is crossing different stains of grain to produce a hybrid, my point is that it is a primitive form of genetic modification.
  8. Key limes are real pain to juice. Regular old limes work fine for lime pie (just don't call it Key lime). I always grate or finely chop citrus rind for lemon pie and have with lime, as well. The only problem is that the lime rind gets too tart as the pie sits. Same deal with limeade. You better drink it all in one sitting or put it in the freezer for later.
  9. It depends on how one is interpreting integrity. Ascribing moral values to food is a bit silly. Technically, food crops are all GMOs since they have been selectively bred for size, texture, flavor and yield. Ears of corn were originally very tiny and held few kernels. Now we have many varieties that are used for human food as well as animal feed. The science of gene modification has allowed food crops in poor countries to feed their burgeoning populations and, through the addition of vitamin A, as in Golden Rice, to prevent blindness. Restricting peoples' access to GMO crops through a sense of purity in food consumption is very selfish.
  10. "Food with integrity"? Is that an implication that food is moral and immoral according to how it is grown/processed?
  11. I am going to bake a blueberry pie today.
  12. Those moths like grains, milled and unmilled. Oftentimes, they are in unopened packages of flours, cereals, cake mixes and the like. Often those items are on the clearance shelf because they aren't moving. Your food is probably spoiled and I would throw it out. The next time you buy flours and grains that aren't going to be used quickly, put them in the freezer for at least 24 hours and that should kill the little buggers off. Alert your market if you shop at the same place often. Health food stores are notorious for being loaded with these moths and with "biscuit beetles". When you remove the packages from the freezer, put the product in plastic containers or bags with labels. You'll need to wipe down your shelves with a weak bleach solution and let it air dry before you put everything back. Think of it as a late Spring Cleaning.
  13. GF, it's three hours earlier in California. Maybe they open later in the day.
  14. I knew what you meant, I was just ribbing you.
  15. Winged beans sound suspiciously like insects.
  16. rotuts, I think you mean Big Agra. Big Pharma is the e-vil drug companies, dontcha know?
  17. Dude, you were at the fair.
  18. Sounds like fantastic hangover food. Other than that, no thank you.
  19. That list is a classic, prasantrin!
  20. Darienne, have you thought about getting a small, say 4 cup food processor? I bought one for my 80 year old mother who has RA and it is easy for her to use and clean.
  21. Not very. For instance, my niece is a vegetarian and is a bossy little snot about it. She's seemingly unaware that others before her have been vegetarian and many of us tried it on for size in college or when we were hippies back in the day. She lectures everyone about her POV, too. Conversely, my nephew (other side of the family) and his wife and children are vegetarians and are quite charming and I don't mind serving meatless meals to them. I enjoy them myself, just not with a side of lecture.
  22. Wal-Mart being featured on Master Chef is no different than Whole Food$ being featured on Top Chef. Sponsorship is sponsorship.
  23. Celeste, mais yeah. It doesn't matter that "Master Chef" is featuring Wal-Mart produce and meats in its current season. Clearly, Gordon Ramsey and company are rural Southern hicktards and not worthy of our attentions.
  24. What you refer to as "political correctness" I would call common courtesy and respect. No, Sylvia. A lot of it is bullying. I'm not talking about Paula Deen, here. “No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be?”
  25. Paula Deen is just the vehicle here. The intent is to marshal all of our thoughts into the "correct" way of thinking. That is why there is the attention given what should be a private matter between PD and her bosses and lawyers.
