  1. Dropped by Orchid Delight the other night on the advice of this thread, and had very nice dinner. Mee goreng, spicy salty tofu (which was absolutely perfect with the beer), and a vegetable dish with a long name with which we should not have tried to expand our culinary horizons by ordering 'spicy'. One of the owners came out and asked how everything was at the end of our dinner and we ended up having a bit of a chat. Apparently the president of Singapore had lunch there on his visit to Vancouver last week! Now that's an endorsement.
  2. I believe there's a sourdough chocolate cake recipe in Nancy Silverton's Breads from the La Brea Bakery. Haven't tried it, but I loved the sourdough rye pancakes from that book. The sourdough bagels were wonderful, but I think they're technically bread. k
  3. Tuscany on Bowen Island. Worth a trip even if you're not hiding out...
  4. Welcome Florin! One thing I do think is positive about Cobs is that they are getting many people used to the idea of purchasing one's bread from a bakery, rather than a supermarket. This is still a radical concept in many parts of North America. While I don't find Cobs' bread to my taste, hopefully the realisation that bread can be better if purchased outside the supermarket will generalise to other bakeries and lead to an increased interest in bakeries as individual sources of bread. Who knows, this might even help nudge people to wondering whether meats might be better purchased from a butcher, vegetables from a greengrocer...
  5. I went to Lebeau a little while ago, and have to say I was disappointed. The waffles are pre-made and sit in the display case! Having read great reviews, I was expecting fresh waffles as a matter of course (never assume, I suppose). If street vendors can do it in Europe, surely an established bakery can, too.
  6. European delis do often carry the jarred sour cherries sans alcohol (Euro Deli across from Capers for one). I've seen them at Bosa as well. Never tried them, though I have a jar that I've been meaning to open for about a year now!
  7. Now I must disagree. For some time I purchased the Costco product, but I've switched back to the more expensive Luc Bergeron etc. The taste really is worth the difference in price. For baking and other such uses where the flavour won't come through so as to make a difference, I use the cheap Costco stuff. For raw consumption and bathing, I use the good stuff. I suggest doing a blind taste test.
  8. And of course there's foundation on Main @ 7th. Expanding "soon" to add the space next door. I don't know how they ran a restaurant on those apartment stoves. Great food, but a bit busy & loud on weekend evenings. I wish they'd add some menu choices, too--I've gone there so much I've eaten through everything. Around the corner on 8th is Wink, a nice space that's a lot quieter. And finally, budgie's burritos, around the corner on kingsway. Burritos like I used to get in SF. Death to the faux "wrap" places! k
