Dang-it Katie, I'm trying to get some work done around here! But, you offer too tempting of a "break." [edited to enable link] ← Why do you think I started the list?!? (To avoid work!!!) ← you caught me red-handed (or should i say, lazy handed!! ). i've got a deadline to meet at the end of this month... which i'd like to finish a bit early so i can really enjoy my upcoming trip!! if i don't, how am i to report back on the wonderful food i'm planning on eating?!?!? u.e. joe, anyone out there? care to elaborate on, confirm or deny this rumor? ulterior epicure. -
Wait, hold on....the lobster burger is back?? ← chef shogun. sorry, not to get your hopes up, my one encounter (or near-encounter) with the lobster burger was a few years back... u.e.

Well, who "exiled" you to NY? Have you read Calvin Trillin? You should! He'll bring you back!! Although, I note that you wouldn't be coming home for the same reasons he would (BBQ)... Ulterior Epicure. [edited to enable link]

I've only managed to eat there once - and in the down-scaled "cafe" portion (actually, it was summer, so we sat on the rather unappealing "terrace" (a.k.a. the sidewalk)). I had their Tuna Burger - exceptional, but pricey at $20 (they mysteriously ran out of the Lobster Burger... at 6.30pm? ) Oh, but it was a damn good tuna burger... I intend to actually "eat in" next time... Ulterior Epicure.

yes, tracy, please do. i would, but i have honestly no idea what you mean by the statement - i'm intrigued. so click away and start us a new thread, pretty please?? u.e.

so many people say that... i've really tried to like the plaza iii, but everytime i go, i'm really disappointed with their meat. it even tastes wet-aged to me (and poorly done at that)... with all of the pleased customers like you, tracy, i must be having really off-experiences (or at least i hope so!!) tracy, perhaps we should move this discussion off-forum... but can you elaborate? i'm curious what you mean by this. shoot me a p.m., i'm curious. u.e.

The type of experiences I've had (say at Yasuda), were so purist that the chef doesn't add anything to the fish. in fact, he meticulously instructs diners whether to use/how much soy sauce or wasabi. Not to be a snob, but it's this kind of experience that I'm seeking - sushi chefs that are strictly loyal to highlighting the fish's natural beauty. If that kind of experience is not to be had in Chicago (yet, hopefully), then that's fine, I just wanted to do my due diligence. At least I'll be prepared for a different type of sushi experience... just didn't want to get my hopes up one way and let down another... Thanks everyone for your insights and suggestions. I would appreciate more - and hopefully someone who can let me in on a "purist" sushi/sashimi omakase experience. U.E.

jesteinf. do you mean the quality (ie. delicateness/freshness) of the fish is obscured by condiments, or do you say that condiments are employed to hide poor quality? i think you mean the former, in which case is a lot less offensive than the latter. ulterior epicure.

Oh, a BIG yes to L.C.'s! Zeemanb, we might just rotate onto the same evening here sometime soon! Agreed. U.E.

Dang-it Katie, I'm trying to get some work done around here! But, you offer too tempting of a "break." Best Everyday Restaurant (i.e. cheap and easy): Chipotle. I know, I know, it's a chain... but I love it and it fits the bill (no pun intended). Best All-around Restaurant (cost doesn't matter): 40 Sardines Best Italian: Lidia's followed closely by Garrozzo's. Best Barbeque: Sorry, I like southern vinegar-based bbq... Kansas City bbq is just two sloppy and sweet for me... Best Chinese: Yikes, you're going to make me pick? Jen Jen's. Best Ice Cream: For lack of better, the gelatos at Sweet Guy in Parkville. Best Cheeseburger: Winstead's Most Want To Vist: Starker's Reserve Best restaurant on the Missouri side (if your best restaurant pick was on the KS side): bluestem Best Steak: Morton's tied with the Golden Ox (Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum!) Yes, please! I have heard of "Heat" - but never really looked into it... Ulterior Epicure.

... oh yes, and then there are those who are just too comfortable with each other!! no thanks, i'll play strip-sushi at home, thanks very much!
-
okay, maybe i was exagerating just a tad with the whole "hand-to-mouth" scenario... yasuda and uezu do employ transport devices (fashion plates and banana leaves, etc...). u.e.

thanks! any idea on prices for an all sushi/sashimi omakase at the bar with imamura? u.e.
-
great! that's exactly the omakase experience i'm looking for! (sushi/sashimi only "progressions"). u.e.

of course he doesn't - he's a doctor!! i, for one, don't do it because it's messy, and, of course, my doctor tells me to be moderate on fried foods (like i listen)... seriously, if you don't have a deep fryer, it's just a messy affair... and i do so little of it that it really doesn't justify investing in filters, converters, or any other semi-technologically/co-ordination-required device(s). u.e.

yum!! sweatbreads!! i've met izard once and serendipitously bumped into her at a restaurant (not scylla) later that week on her off day! she struck me as impressively young!! i'm really excited about trying her food. it's gotten so much buzz and praise. would appreciate any more detailed reports! cheers. u.e.

I'll pass on the McDonald's-scented patio party, but would love to contribute to the production of soap!! This is great - thanks for all of the suggestion folks! Now I feel a lot less guilty/worried about frying up some cheese for my salad tomorrow!! Ulterior Epicure.

just to clarify, ron, in which regard? sushi/sashimi purist omakases? any idea on price point (no info on the kaze website). u.e. ← Sorry u.e., meant to specify omakase. =R= ← not to belabor the point, but i guess you're still not specific enough for me. do you mean sushi/sashimi-only omakase or do you just mean omakase which often can involve meats and cooked items as well desserts and salads... (comme japanese-style degustation)? u.e.

OK, first of all, let's not resort to name-calling. It isn't dignified. well, i was willing to concede with "crusty," but i guess my fellow "curmudgeon" is "above the crust..."

wow - not that i'd actually consider eating such a concoction, but it sounds like an irresistably good pumpkin-seed schmaltz at two-star michelin obauer restaurant in werfen, austria. yum... i'd be a happy bird! u.e.
