I buy fresh fish in Cascais Fish Market. There, you have fresh Seabass, that is probably the best fish in Portugal. Saturday's morning is the best time to go there. I never buy fish in El Corte Ingles supermarket, because I had some bad experiences. It seems good, but it's not always.
-
In my opinion Porto de Santa Maria, is a very good restaurant for fresh fish, cooked in very simple way. Sometimes overcooked. Wine service is just average. In same area, I prefer Michelin-starred Fortaleza do Guincho. http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=91009 Regards

my attempt to make Mexican food in Portugal!
PauloR replied to a topic in Spain & Portugal: Cooking & Baking
In most of portuguese supermarkets, you will find Chili Powder, with the name of Piri-Piri. Most of this chili are from Angola, but works well for mexican food... Regards. -
Last time I had dinner in Eleven, the price was 110 euros pp , menu with wines.
-
Today, Eleven, is the best restaurant in Lisbon. Other good restaurants are: http://www.tavaresrico.pt Pragma Restaurant Casino of Lisbon http://www.casino-lisboa.pt Gambrinus is a good restaurant for seafood. 30 km from Lisbon www.ginchotel.pt one of the best restaurants in Portugal.

According to michelin, Knives and Forks, has more to see with comfort of the dining room, and stars with food quality.

King crab was the name they had in english menu, but it was, like you said, spider crab ( txangurro in basque ) I did'n know that 'begi handi' was squid in basque. ( very dificult to translate anything in "basque" ) It was a squid's ink gravy.

Recently I had lunch at Mugaritz. It was an excellent meal, and the best I had in San Sebastian area (Arzak included). I chose the Naturan Menu, that was quite similar the one described by Andy Fenn. We started with the clay potatoes with garlic mayonnaise, and vegetable tempura. The potatoes came over round hot stones. Chicken wing in a mushroom consomé. CHILLED VEGETABLE SOUP, shrimp, herbs and fern shoots. Representing baby mozzarelas: BUTTERY IDIAZABEL CHEESE GNOCCI IN SALTED IBERIAN PORK BOUILLON. Contrasting vegetables. CRUSHED POTATOES, BROKEN EGGS AND VEGETABLE COAL. Garlic 'Caesin' Dressing. A Pasta of amaranth, sardine broth and BABY LANGOUSTINE TAILS. Tender garden leaves. KING CRAB MARINATED IN OLIVE OIL, bathed in gelatinous chicken broth and spiced with toasted buckwheat. HAKE FILLET WITH BABY GARLIC, hazlenut praline, soured cream and bitter flowers. (Out of Focus ) TUNA LOIN ROASTED and bathed in a concentrated consomme of pilchards. Clay roasted onions and sweet spices. ROAST IBERIAN PORK, red curry paste and plump salad leaves. BABY SQUID CHARGRILLED OVER GRAPE VINES, vegetable "bacon" and "begihandi" cream. My wife asked this instead the pork. Seeking a contrast of temperatures, textures and cultures. VIOLET ICE CREAM, hot almond marzipan, shavings of spiced bread and green tea. MILK AND TAPIOCA ICE CREAM with organic cane sugar.. Hazelnuts wings and chocolate sand. FROZEN CHOCOLATE CYLINDER with almond cream, chocolate and lime. I agree with Andy, that the tuna was the less interesting dish. I found the sardine consomé, too strong and all the flavours were lost. Wine service was good, and inexpensive. The wines were served at the right temperatures in apropriate glasses. All the service was very good and friendly.

Eleven serves lunch menu, with wines 70/80 euros, and no problem to go as a single, in both Eleven and Terreiro do Paço. Other restaurants dress code informal, prices lower. Eleven is a nice place, and one of my favourite restaurants in Lisbon. The chef Joachim Koerper, is german, but he lives in Spain. The food is mediterranian/portuguese. I don't think that is a "new rich" restaurant, but I agrre that it looks "Slick". My favourite in Lisbon area is Fortaleza do Guincho, in Cascais, ( Praia do Guincho 27 km from Lisbon ) http://www.guinchotel.pt/portugues/index.htm Fortaleza do Guincho is a charm hotel, and the owner is Mr Stanley Ho, from Hong Kong. The hotel antique furniture and decoration, was recently changed to a strange chinese style "Refined" Portuguese Food..... http://www.terreiropaco.com/ Regional portuguese food in Lisbon. http://solardosnunes.restaunet.pt/ Restaurante Adega da Tia Matilde. telf. 217972172

Hi Anne. I will try to help you. In Lisbon I think you do not have major problems. I can recomend you some restaurants in Lisbon. Best new restaurante Quinta de Catralvos. 40 minutes South of Lisbon. http://www.quintadecatralvos.com/ Chef Luís Baena, worked with Paul Bocuse, Joel Robuchon and in many places in Japan. Tasting menu not more than 50 euros p/p with wines by the glass. Some fotos : Cheese with trufle, ham toast with salmon caviar This is marinated fish, with dried vegetables... Snail brioche with Porto Vintage caviar. Marinated sardines Hotdog -Shrimp sausage with home made mustard. Seabass Red mullet Tea, lime and vodka ice cream Mushrooms with ham and quail eggs Quail Eggs cooked at low temperature, with trufle. Potatoes salad with olive oil and trufles Raspberry merengue Deserts Some of these dishes have gluten, but if you want to go, you can e-mail direct to the Chef, and explain him. I can send you by PM the chef e-mail, if you wish. In Cascais Restaurante 100 Maneiras, ( new portuguese food ) Nice place, ( Fisherman's beach ) very good food, good wine list. Menu with wines by the glass 55 euros, TELEFONE 214835394 I have also the Chef e-mail. If you like seafood, ( Shrimp, Lobster, Percebes ) go to Ericeira ( near Sintra). Restaurant " Mar à Vista ". It's probably the ugly and noisiest restaurante in Ericeira, but it have the best lobsters, langostines .... in Lisbon area. Telefone: 261 862 928 I think here you have not gluten problems. Stamed shrimps, langostines, lobster, percebes. Near Obidos go Peniche, 25 Km, and you have Grilled Sardines. Avoid fried fish, fried meat, esparregado ( green vegetables mixed with olive oil, garlic and flour, its like mashed potatoes with green colour ), meat gravys. " Bacalhau à Lagareiro is nice" grlled cod wit garlic/onions and olive oil. Other dishes with bacalhau could contain flour. Some sausages have flour. Regards

Fish overcooked, is a problem in most of the traditional restaurants in Portugal.

I forgot this one. Retaurante. D.Tonho. Cais da Ribeira 13-15. Tel.222004307 http://www.dtonho.com/ Food, and wine service, in O Poleiro is better in my opinion. If you have time try both . D. Tonho have good tradicional food, and the restaurant is placed in one of the most tipical areas of Portugal. Best dishes. Bacalhau ( salted cod ) Robalo ao sal ( seabass in salt crust ) Cabrito assado ( roasted lamb )

Very dificult to find ( ask for " Estádio do Moreirense" , its the football stadium) In Évora, " Fialho " and " Luar de Janeiro " In Estremoz " São Rosas" In Lisbon area. 100 MANEIRAS, in Cascais ( new portuguese food ) Nice place, good food, good wine list. Have been there last 18th April. Dinner for two, ( tasting spring menu ) with wines by the glass 625 euros. I think they have cheaper menus, like "Le menu du marché de Pierre Gagnaire". Yes, it will be open in August.
-
Comparativily, I do not see any explanation, for the inclusion of St John, and the exclusion of Marc Veyrat and the Maisons de Bricourt. A recent dinner, here in Portugal, in the restaurant Fortaleza do Gincho, chef Antoine Westermman, was far better than my experience at St John. This does not mean, that Fortaleza do Guincho should be in the top 50......
-
After a recent, and excellent lunch at Pierre Gagnaire, Marc Veyrat is still the best restaurant in France, in my opinion...... I can't see it in the list....
