How would a slice of foie do in one of those bags?
I don't think the bag would enjoy it as much as I would.

And I thought my mom was the only one who did this.
My mom as well.

Let's see. With the holiday coming up, Tommy was just about to tell us about some more Italian culinary adventures.

I made my first Monte Cristo sandwich because of that picture. I used a lot more egg though, and fried it in a pan.
(I didn't know what a Monte Cristo was prior to this thread.)
Did you dip the pieces in strawberry jam or apple jelly before eating them?

Does anyone know of a good article or post surveying the LA taco scene? Are there areas in LA that have a good concentration of taquerias and taco stands and taco trucks, like Fruitvale in Oakland, Mission (to some extent) in SF, and Franklin in Sacramento, and are relatively safe at least during the day for a Russian Jew who speaks some Spanish?
Can't say I'm aware of such a piece, tacos being so ubiquitous here. From El Tepeyac in East LA to the places on Olvera Street to the places at Grand Central Market downtown to Yuca's in Los Feliz to El Taurino in the Rampart District, etc., etc. And then there's fish tacos from spots like Senor Fish (downtown, Eagle Rock). Edit: I forgot Loteria Grill in the Farmer's Market at Fairfax & Beverly. My bad.
As for Las Ruinas, I found an excuse to go there Saturday. Fortunately I just beat the lunch crush. One of the downsides of the Golden touch is that it brings the crowds. The 2-3 people working the place were inundated (be patient). The alambre I had was not like a chile relleno unless you would consider a deconstructed relleno consisting of meat, onions, and chopped peppers with a handful of tortillas a relleno. A lot of grub for the dough. I also had an al pastor taco--delicious. When I go again, I'll just have assorted tacos.
The place reminds me of Yuca's without tamales and no beans--just taco variations, but real good tacos. Again, go an off hour or have patience.

Does this mean he's back?
His wife, Laurie Ochoa, is the editor.

All of the above plus Bayona and Brigtsens.

Maybe there's a business opportunity here. Toasters at every table. It's the new fondue.
We actually went to a restaurant in Paris this fall where there were toasters at every table. The house specialty was foie gras and they provided broiche for you to toast tableside to your own liking.
The Ship's chain in LA had toasters at every table and on the counter too. Only for making actually toast tho (the slots were fixed). Of course, all that remains of Ship's is a couple of Jetsons-like Googie signs at La Cienega & Olympic.

Any more requests?
Please, sir, some more!?

Hokie smokies! That's a damn fine looking sandwich! I could stand one of those puppies right now!
Is this company publicly traded?

What was the next meal, Tommy?

To get back on topic (and since I know next to nothing about scotch), what's the word on Johnnie Walker--Red, Black, Blue & Gold? Price, value, quality, etc.

A sophisticated Sophist sipping some simple single malts, seemingly serenely satisfied?
Slurp!

Are you a Sophist? Or a sophisticate?

This could be good. Don't know why, but something about the Bag reminds me of those Tupperware thiniges that you can microwave "poached" eggs in.

Now, if it could only crank out Monte Cristo sandwiches.
Thats just turkey and ham and swiss and challah dipped in an eggwash, right? Sounds doable.
Yeah, it's the eggwash that's got me wonderin'.

Best to toast the marshmallows over the stove top or fireplace and make them traditionally.
A noble experiment nonetheless.

Hmmm. Wine. Cheese. Too bad the bread wasn't better. But two out of three....
"The bread at Boccondivino is excellent," he said with a firm voice.
How about those pigeons?

I thought this was an eGullet thread somehow related to Italian food.
It's what all the smart pigeons are eating this year.
Don't mind me I'm heading back over to the wine forum where it is safer.
Watch out for TCA. And you're worried about pigeons? There's Thunderbird over there!

Would the reverse of this trip be better?
Sounds like a great trip. As a general proposition, I think it would be easier to ease into Venice than Paris, especially the first time. But, in terms of reversal, since the food is better in Paris than Venice, I'd decide the order of things based on the days decent restaurants are open in the City of Lights--lots are closed weekends.

Yeah, that's one way. Or, you can use the quote button and cut out anything you don't want from the message you are replying to.

Go to Snug Harbor for jazz. Look at antiques on Royal, then compare the (lower) prices on Magazine.
