  1. So I've decided to try out Spitfire when we are there on the weekend for our mexican fiesta. I will be giving them a call earlier in the afternoon to place our order and will swing by around dinner to pick up the food to bring back to our hotel to eat. I am not an expert on mexican food by any means but will report back when I am back on the food. Hopefully the roads are cleared up for our drive down from Vancouver to Seattle on Saturday.....

Thanks to all for your recommendations!!!

  2. I've been to Spitfire.  The food is solid and a few items are even very good, they are also not necessarily friendly to eating while getting dressed for a night out as many items are juicy/greasy/saucy.

    Rocky

The items that I am particularly interested in are the Quesadillas with Roasted Poblano Chiles, Chicken Flautas, Chorizo and Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms, Meatballs in Spicy Chipotle Sauce and the Smoked Jalapeno - Tequila Ceviche. Have you tried any of these items? Anthing else that you've had that you would recommend? I think the meatballs might be a bit messier than the rest (depending on how "saucy" they are) but I was thinking that the rest of the food might be okay. I must say that your description of the food as being juicy and saucy has got my mouth watering...

We are going to be driving from Vancouver to Seattle so we will have a vehicle at our disposal to pick up the food.

  3. Has anyone been to Spitfire? I really like their menu and the location is handy to our hotel so we can do a pick up. We are going to be staying at the Sheraton Seattle on 6th Avenue and Spitfire is located on 4th Avenue. I tried doing a search and didn't come up with anything on it besides under the topic of openings and closings and didn't feel like looking through 46 pages of replies to find the one that I was looking for....

  4. What about Tia Lou's? They're not too far from the market. They might have something they could prepare and deliver.

I had read up on them but had been sticking to restaurants that had a website where I could check out their menu and also provided an e-mail that I could contact them with. I noted that they did have a great happy hour there though and they would have been a definite contender if we were going to go someplace. I may still give them a call though and see what they've got on offer since the location is good for us if we need to do a pick up.

  5. Guayamas in general caters and you'd have to see about being able to pick up at the downtown location, Veracruz doesn't suck for a mall Mexican place, you can also check with the various meal delivery services to see if they will deliver to hotels and which restaurants they serve.

    Rocky

I've tried to search for meal delivery services in Seattle and didn't come up with anything. I'm not familiar with this, can you point me in the right direction to get more information on it?

  6. You could check with Mayas.  I would guess most hotels aren't going to want you to bring outside food in.

If you're looking for a place that does catering close by your hotel, there's always Mama's. They do catering, or you could have the party there. 206-728-6262. Sorry I couldn't find a website.

Thanks for all of the replies! I've tried to contact Mama's by e-mail but it bounced back to me so I was going to give them a call to see what they can do for me. As for going there, we are looking at having food in our room to eat while we get ready and some of the girls that I am going with are pretty high maintenance and it is quite a production. I'll be the one in the corner drinking my marg and enjoying some good food while I am waiting for them to be ready to go...

I hadn't heard much about Maya's or Guayamas so I'll have to look into them a bit more.

I have heard back from a couple of places including Mexico Cantina y Veracruz mentioned by kiliki. They had offered to do up some guac, salsa and chips for $100 for 10 people....I don't think so!! I could just as easily make up some of my own for a hell of alot cheaper. We are looking at getting a hotel with a suite that has a kitchenette so I could always mix up some salsa and guac myself.

I also heard back from Cactus Restaurant and they have some pretty interesting options (tamales, ceviche, Jalapeños stuffed with herbed goat cheese, wrapped in bacon, grilled and served with buttermilk crema, along with the usual guac, salsa and chips). Anyone been?

  7. I am going to be in Seattle for a stagette party on December 2nd. We will be staying in a hotel downtown (location TBD) and are looking for a caterer or restaurant that will deliver to the hotel. We are considering a hotel in the vicinity of the Pike Market so we may be able to pick up the goodies if the restaurant was in that vicinity.

There will be 10 of us and we are looking at having mexican appies while we are getting ready to go out on the town for an evening of debauchery and fun. The bride is getting married in Mexico thus the mexican theme.......

I was wondering what mexican restaurants provide delivery/catering/take out service that I could contact that are located in the downtown area and specifically around the Pike Place Market.

Also, I had read about El Puerco Lloron and the Mexican Grocery in the Pike Place Market and was wondering if either of these places would fit the bill in getting an assortment of mexican appy type food to go.

  8. I am so glad that I found this thread. I recall reading in another thread that you were in France and was wondering if you would do another recount of your trip "a la Daddy A's excellent Okanagan adventure".

I have plans on making a trip to France and am starting to read up on the area now....there is so much to see and do and so little time that I'll get to spend there that I'll need the next year to get my head around it all. In the research I've done, I've been looking at apartments in Paris and am glad that you whole heartedly recommend going that route. Now just to figure out which arrondissement I want to stay in.

I'm really enjoying this thread and look forward to reading more.

  9. More times than I can remember, I read longingly about special wine dinners, tasting events and the like that are happening in Vancouver that I'm not able to go to.  I've been checking out the menus that the various restaurants are putting out for the City Dine event and wished I could get down there and support a good cause while getting to try some great food. Well.....Mr. Newbie came home a few nights ago and asked if I wanted to come to Vancouver with him next Monday. Hell yeah!! Finally......I am going to be in Vancouver when there is a special dining event happening!!!

It's our anniversary on Tuesday so we are going to celebrate on Monday night with dinner at HSG. It was the first non chain restaurant that I got him to try down in Vancouver and we both really enjoyed the evening. It doesn't hurt that the Hanger Steak and GBP are included in the special either.

I'm going to be on my own for lunch and was thinking of trying Cassis Bistro. Will I feel uncomfortable sitting there solo or do they have a bar that I could sit at? I really enjoy Go Fish and was contemplating going there for lunch but I've been there a few times and thought I should really try a new restaurant. I was looking at the restaurants that are participating in City Dine and of the ones that are offereing lunch as part of the event, Cassis Bistro's menu really jumped out at me.

I will try and be there to see you. It's been a while. It is my anniversary so I will be going somewhere that night. My kids think it is all of our anniversary so they want to go to White Spot. Maybe some take out for them when the sitter comes over.

What....not going to HSG for your anniversary dinner?? Hope to see you but totally understandable if you don't make an appearance.

  11. Thanks for the food report, I've only been to the White Goose Bistro once and have been meaning to go back. My work is located on the other end of town so it is a little out of my way for lunch and I tend to spend my evenings at home cooking for friends and family. Now I know what items I need to try on the menu when I make it back.

When Chef Moreno had Da Moreno's in town (prior to moving down to Vancouver) his ravioli stuffed with lobster was "the dish" to have and I was happy to see it revived on his new menu.

I've been to Cimo's a few times but must admit that I have not strayed too far from the pastas. The only other items I have had is their Calamari with a garlic aioli and their soups. I haven't had their roasted red pepper but have had their Fresh Tomato Soup and enjoyed it. Then again, most restaurants around don't serve homemade soups....Their calamari may be a bit salty for some but growing up on the east coast, they remind me of my beloved fried clams that I soooo love.

I try to get to the Farmer's Market every Saturday, not quite as large as the one I'm used to, but still has an adequate selection of fresh fruits, veggies and homemade breads. Was nibbling on some mighty tasty cherries last night while cooking dinner for the in-laws.

  12. Prince George - haven't eaten there for ages, but apparently the people who used to own the Italian restaurant that is now Rare (help me someone) have moved back up to PG, and have re-opened a restaurant there - might be worth checking out.

The new restaurant that Viola da gamba mentions is the White Goose Bistro that is owned by Chef Moreno who had Bis Moreno while he was in Vancouver. Definitely worth checking out.

Another restaurant worth visiting is Cimo's Mediterranean Grill. Their pastas are homemade and they've got a great menu.

If you like a good steak, Ric's Grill never fails to please and Winston's Restaurant located in the Coast Inn of the North is pretty good. I was there recently and had their table d'hote for $39, good deal and tasty to boot.

Tandoori Restaurant is another option if you like East Indian food. I've had their Vegetarian Special Dinner for 2 which included Eggplant Bharta, Vegetable Jalfrazie, Aloo Matta, Dal Maharani, Vegetable Samosas and Naan bread. I'm no expert but it was quite tasty and I'm looking forward to going back to try some of the meat dishes.

We've also got a few good greek restaurants.

Unfortunately we don't have the restaurant selection that they have in the Vancouver area, but we've got a few good restaurants so you shouldn't have a hard time finding a decent meal while you are here.

Have a great trip and I'll look forward to reading the trip report!

  13. This year, we are heading out to a friend's cabin on the lake. The plan for dinner is some whole salmon cooked on the barbie, rice and various salads on the side, s'mores for dessert. I'm thinking of bringing out a Strawberry rhubarb pie or something of the sort in keeping with the red and white theme. There is going to be a large group of us out there so it is going to more of a potluck thing as far as the salads go. I'm thinking of doing up some kind of sauce to serve with the salmon and am leaning towards some kind of dill/lemon/mustard concoction.

Numerous drinks to help keep us cool in the hot weather that is forecast for the weekend. I'm going to do up a pitcher of Sangrias, have some mojitos on hand (even though they are not what the "in" crowd is drinking anymore...) to go along with the cold beer that will be consumed.

  14. Some smoked salmon (lemon pepper and candied nuggets) while waiting for my local seafood market to pack up 6 oysters to go (2 beau soleil, 2 malpeque and 2 effingham). They will shuck them for you and place them on a bed of ice in a styrofoam container so that you don't lose all those delicious juices. Sat and slurped them at my desk, naked, just the way I like em.

Best $6 lunch I've ever had while sitting in front of the computer at work!

  15. While sitting at my desk at work: A greek type salad with cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, olives, sundried tomato and oregano feta cheese and shrimp with olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano with a bit of C citrus salt. One of my favourite lunches to bring to work, lots of flavor with the least amount of effort.

I bought the salt on my last visit to Vancouver and LOVE it.

A fresh bun (to sop up all those yummy juices), yoghurt and banana bread on the side.

  16. I believe I reported in the "Where were the last three places you ate" thread but now that I think about it, I should have reported back on this thread.

I arrived in Vancouver on a Friday and met up with Daddy-A at Go Fish for some fried halibut and fries. I've been back to Vancouver once more and it is a must do for me. I LOVE deep fried fish and Go Fish does it like no other, especially that delicious tartar sauce that they serve along side it. After all the deep fried goodness, I wandered around a few of the shops close by (Les Amis du Fromage and a few others that I can't recall) to walk off all those calories I just ate. Go Fish is located right next to the Granville Market so on my last trip to Vancouver, I shopped around there. A must do if you've never been.

I then met up with a few other e-gulleters at West for a couple of drinks and an appy. Unfortunately, I can't remember what I ate but do remember it was good.

I managed to hit Barbara's Books for Cooks but did not get to do alot of the other things I was hoping to. My husband wasn't as busy with his work schedule while we were there so we got to spend more time together than I had anticipated.

We did go to dinner on the Saturday night to the Hamilton Street Grill and had a fantastic time. With two small children at home, we don't get to go out to long leisurely dinners as much as we would like and the HSG did not disappoint. I had the hangar steak and the infamous Gingerbread Pudding for dessert. My husband tends to stick to the Keg when he is down there but LOVED the HSG and we will definitely be back.

I had hoped to hit Cioppino's Enoteca for lunch but things didn't work out and I wasn't able to go.

On my last trip to Vancouver, I went to a couple of different restaurants, both which I thoroughly enjoyed. I went to Sala Thai for dinner one night and Joe Fortes for lunch. I am definitely no expert on thai food but I thought the food was quite good and at Joe Fortes, I got to try my first raw oysters. We sat inside, but if the weather is good, I hear they've got a great patio, the perfect place to sit on a sunny day while sipping a nice cold drink and downing a few raw oysters.

Have a great trip in July!

  17. Mmmmm, gingerbread pudding with caramel sauce. I was very fortunate to get to try the infamous g-pudding at the Hamilton Street Grill in Vancouver and it was FABULOUS!!! What desserts were the "hit of the party"?

  18. WOW!! That is one impressive spread. Can you talk about what items you served and how long it took you to get everything put together. How many people were there and got to sample all those delicious treats. Wish I were one of them... What did you serve as drinks?

  19. You can prepare the ingrediants for a Greek salad in advance, I did that for Mother's Day and put everything in plastic containers with lids.

Seedless cuke (cut into large dice/chunks); tomato cut into wedges; red onion sliced very thin; green pepper sliced thin; Kalamata olives; feta. Simple dressing made with lemon juice, S&P, oregano, olive oil.

As a fellow golfer, I know I like salty things after playing!

You've read my mind! I've come up with a menu and Greek Salad was on there, along with a Thai Pasta Salad, Caesar Salad, Curried Coleslaw with Green Onions and Dried Cranberries, Tossed Garden Greens with a couple of different dressings, Fresh Vegetable Crudite with Dip and Baked Potatoes with the usual fixings (butter, sour cream, crumbled bacon and green onions).

I am also thinking about doing up some fresh salsa and putting that on the tables with some nacho chips to munch on while they wait for their meal and the other golfers to finish.

Thanks for the ideas and if anyone has any other ideas, keep em' coming. I've got a few weeks until the event and my menu isn't set in stone....

  20. How about a salad of fresh mozarella balls with tomato, sweet onion, and fresh basil with balsamic viniagrette?

You get the added benefit that it will kind of look like a big bowl of golf balls.

Great idea - bocconcini golf balls! And maybe you could add "tees" (carrots? bell pepper?). And divot repair tools made of what? I can't think of anything naturally occurring that bears any resemblance to one but I'll work on it.

Building on this idea, you could imprint them with cheesecloth for texture!

What great ideas! I think that I'll play with this one over the next few weeks and see how it looks.

  21. How about adding in a cold noodle salad flavoured with sesame and cilantro ("Asian noodle salad")? Vietnamese beef salad? Thai noodle salad using rice vermicelli?

I was actually considering doing some kind of asian noodle salad instead of the usual pasta salad. I've made a couple of different ones in past. I picked up some thai basil and kaffir lime leaves when I was down in Vancouver recently as those items are not available where I live so maybe I'll try to find a recipe for using them up. How long will the basil and leaves keep for? Can I freeze them?
