  1. If you are looking for some high fiber grain that is also low Purine you could try Barley. Nice and bulky and low calorie, but yet with a little spicing can be used in place of rice in many recipes. Barley is reccomended on a low Purine diet. A nice barley pilaf with chicken and some roasted veg could give that umami taste and be very healthy.
  2. I remember helping my mom to make noodles when I was about 4. They were soft noodles and we had to roll them, and then cut and unroll. The first thing I made by my self was probably Hawaiian melts. Ham pineapple and cheese on and english muffin and melted in the oven. I was probably about 6. Mom did the oven part. I could back a mean chocolate chip cookie by the time I was 10 though!
  3. I prefered Julia Child to Sesame Street.
  4. If you are making slushy drinks in your blender, let the ice sit out a few minutes before you try and blend. Just-out-of-the-freezer ice is really hard and is hard to blend. Just a note from your friendly party girl.
  5. I have been known to put butter and parmesan and spices and salt and pepper on my popcorn.
  6. Ranch Dressing. It just tastes gross. The Husband tries to tempt me, but I would much rather eat my carrots plain. Ech! And I agree with whoever said Papaya tastes like spit.
  7. Re: Ensure You can get it as a pudding too. The Hospital might not carry it, but you can buy it that way in the drugstore. The butterscotch is not bad. But if he likes it........ Just be glad he can eat, and doesnt need a pureed diet. No matter what we do to the taste, they always look nasty. I am glad he gets to go home for the weekend.
  8. A lot of it is cost. Hospitals only get so much per day per patient and have to cover staff, equipment and food costs. Since the staff are all unionised and are making 18- 20$ an hour it really adds up. Plus the kitchens have to cover all the costs of things like Ensure and Tube feedings for the really sick which are horrendously expensive. Many hospitals have moved to buying everything in and reheating, or even having it all cooked at a central location and shipped out three times a day. Supposedly this reduces costs. We have just moved to that model at one of the hospitals in London. Other hospitals heat on the plate. Which does result in grey steamed food. But once again it's a cost factor. We do try, we really do. We are constantly doing taste tests and trying to make the food more appealing. Admittedly I work at a smaller hospital that the one you are dealing with, but we do try. I hope you can get the caf exception to help with decent food.
  9. Oh my god! I have to try this. My supply of duck fat is dwindling, dwindling, dwindling. Time to roast another duck!
  10. I have worked in Healthcare food service for many years now. We used to have a phamplet that we gave out to families wanting to bring food in to patients. It pretty much just said what you have already been told in this thread with additional info on food safety. Also, If you ask nicely, sometimes food service supervisors and dietitians can authorize cafeteria meals for patients. That way you could be assured of another good meal each day. I think Scarborough Hospital is on a retherm system where all the meals are plated cold and reheated. It's pretty crappy food. You might also want to consider things like pudding packs and granola bars. Things to keep bedside that dont require any prep.
  11. Inspired by this blog we took a mini road trip today and hit a bunch of places to the south of London. Appin Abattoirs, Fresh asparagu stand and cookie factoy. Oh my yum.
  12. I havent been there in years! Next time I go visit the folks I am taking the long way. This whole blog is making me homesick for Gandma. Have you even been to the Celtic Festival in Goderich? How was your interview? We lived right by the Krispy Kreme here in London. They closed down last week. Guess Timmys won.
  13. My Mom and Grandma used to can dozens and dozens of jars of this stuff every year. I think I still have a jar lurking at the back of my cupboard. I love rhubarb stewed and then drizzled with honey. Did you know that a cup of rhubarb has more calcium than a cup of milk? Mmm Rhubarb sourcream coffee cake. Rhubarb crisp, rhubarb pie, rhubarb chutney. Now I need some rhubarb! There a is turkey place south of london that looks about the same. I buy a lot of turkey since it's on the way home.
  14. I love Angelo's! Do you feel the quality of their prepared stuff has gone down? The cakes just don't look as good as they used to. But the deli can't be beat. There is a great butcher in the strip plaza across from Angelo's and an all you can eat sushi place that is decent.
  15. Cheezies. Cheezies and hot dogs. I feel so ashamed.
  16. I'll bet I know your father, or his family, as I grew up in Alvinston, and remember lots of great church suppers in Kilmartin. My dad was a large animal vet, and knew everyone from Inwood to Appin... ← He probably know my Aunts and Uncles in Law too, they are bigwigs around that area. Herford Farmers, volunteer fireman, yadda yadda yadda.
  17. I have never been to Bertoldi's but have always wanted to. Cafe One on Richmond is good for lunches. The budget only streches so far. So we try and eat on the cheap. But you need to make butter tarts this week. Just because. I like the market but find it very expensive. It's a treat to go but we don't buy much. Mostly cheese.
  18. Hi Cali! Exeter eh? My Mom grew up in the next town (well village really) Crediton. She went to highschool in Exeter. I am in London now, do you ever come down to the market here? We have found some pretty good places to eat in town too. I love seeing my neck of the woods from another perspective.
