  1. Thanks Geoff, that sounds great! I would like to have dinner at Splendido, as well - my boss keeps telling me that it is a must. Do you agree?
  2. Actually I should narrow things down geographically - I'll be staying near College & Bathurst. I'm definitely planning one evening at Splendido, but other than that I'd like to not stray too far from the neighbourhood.
  3. Hi friends I will spend 3 days in Toronto in mid-November; I've never bee, and I don't know much about the Dining scene. I would appreciate a few tips on where to go for great Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner (without losing my shirt ). including a few places where a girl can go by herself without feeling out of place.
  4. My favorite place to watch the games is Shebeen at the Irish Heather, right at the bar with a plate of beef pot pie, a glass of Woodford's reserve (at $6.00!!!) and a pint of Guiness in front of me. I love the room, it is so small that it feels like you're at somebody's house (or in one of those party basements that our parents had in the sixties, remember, with cheesy fishnets hanging from the ceilings).
  5. Salsify is a wonderful thing - you can make the most amazing soup with it, or roast it in the oven and serve it with Halibut or just ion a bed of greens. It is very flavourful and pairs nicely with aromatic white wines. Drool...
  6. I'm trying to find Salsify, if possible organic. No luck so far. Does anybody know where I can find it?
  7. The promo officially ends at the end of October but we'll expand it until mid-November. Thank you everybody for all the praise - and if you're looking for a Hart House wedding, give me a call!
  8. I'm a little biased because I work there but it is a hell of a deal for a fantastic meal (and a great opprortunity to invest all the money you save into a nice bottle of wine...)
  9. I'll check Drive Organics tomorrow. Thanks for the tip. Say hi to T for me. That is, assuming I recognize that dog. If by chance I'm wrong then as usual I blame it on the wine T ← I'll tell him you said hi! ← I'll tell him you said hi. He works at South China Seas, and he will give you any number of awesome recommendations on things to buy and to cook - he just made a fantastic hot sauce that he might still have a few samples of...

  11. Apart from South China Seas at GIM, Drive Organics on Commercial Drive sells the best selection of Wild mushrooms I've seen so far.
  12. My current favorite Chef is Segar Kulasegarampillai, Sous Chef at the Hart House - he just joined us after a number of years as exec Chef at Mildred Pierce in Toronto. His food is amazing but the most wonderful thing is the combination of culinary genius and sunny disposition -
  13. Of all the places I've tried so far I prefer the Dim Sum at Chong Qing on Commercial and 12th. The don't do carts, but their a la carte choices are always fresh and tasty. Theit Won Ton in spicy peanut sauce is devine.
  14. The Hart House on Deer Lake has a nice Mother's Day brunch buffet, the price is somewhere between $27 and $30.
  15. My favorite cheap sushi place is Shiro on 15th and Cambie, yucked into a rather sad looking strip mall. Friendly service, awesome food (especially the California Roll with real crab instead of that terrible imitation crap) and interesting daily specials. We are huge eaters and never pay more than $30 for Dinner. I'm not sure if they are open for lunch, though.
  16. Gourmet Warehouse sells a very good spanish e.v. olive oil (two bottles @ $12.00) that is excellent for everyday cooking. Santa Barbara has very reasonable e.v. oils in large sizes. I like the dark Colavita oil for everyday use. They sell it in 4 different sizes.
  17. Does anybody know waht's happening at the Stanley Park Pavilion? I heard a rumor that somebody is going to take it over, renovate and remodel it and reopen it as a restaurant.
  18. Hi Bubbalicious that sound just like my dinner (ha ha). I have to agree wholeheartedly. It was spectacular. Isn't it amazing how the feel of beautiful flatware enhances your dining experience?
  19. Capers has a nice selection of garden herb seeds, as well as Drive Organics on Commercial drive.
  20. I tried Martini a few weeks ago, and was deeply disappointed. The crust was thicka and doughy, and the overall quality was pretty mediochre.
  21. These are my favorites: Chongquing on 12th and Commercial delivers - and they have the most oustanding Wonton in spicy peanut sauce. Tandoori Palace on Commercial & Grant delivers as well.
  22. My two favorite places for pizza don't deliver, but I'll list themn nonetheless: Dockside Restaurant (Granville Island): Amazing Crust, thin, flavourful. Chef Brian Fodor will take the recipe to his grave, I'm afraid. Nick's Pizza (on 4027 MacDonald): Fantastic Pizza. Haven't been there in a while, but I used to drive all across town for their pizza.
  23. Tandoori Palace on Commercial Drive & Grant. Awesome, and I mean aaawesome Butter Chicken. Friendly, warm service, good food. And they deliver.
