Thanks, everyone. I tried Seven Hills but they are closed for good, so they say, but when I go by, the lights are always on. Maybe just the bar is open. Formia's is too small, as is Cosimos and Vinnie's. I think I'm headed towards Angelo's. Has anyone eaten or attended a function there? The price is right, and they have the space. Hopefully, the food and service will be good. My dad is not picky, and, as I said, I am on a tight budget. (I was even thinking about Charlie Brown's )
I might even have to have a cash bar.
Donna Marie,It's been awhile, but, we ate at a place called Seven Hills in Bloomfield and the food was very good and they had party rooms. I don't think it was too expensive and I know that they had buffet and dinners. Just a thought for you.
-
Thanks, Duchess. My first choice was Formia's, but they told me today they only seat 44 max. That is too close for comfort for me.
I didn't think about the fact that most of the people will be older and would like to be served. It is a good point.
-
I would like recommendations where we can celebrate my dad's 90th birthday. I'm inviting about 68 people, and probably about 50 will be attending. Does anyone know where I can find a good, cost-efficient place to have the party? I'm looking for either a sit down dinner or buffet. A liquor license would be nice, but not necessary. I live in Bloomfield, and would like the place close to my home as people will be coming in from out of state (my dad is one of ten children!). Also, I'd like room for a DJ, or some type of music, but a dance floor is not necessary. Dad cannot climb stairs.
I called several places in Bloomfield and am thinking about Angelo's, Cosimo's, Formia's, Bella Napoli, and Vinnie's but have not received prices as yet. It does not have to be Italian. The only reasons I chose those restaurants is because they are local and I have dined there. I have not attended a "function" at any of these places so I don't know how their service and food would be for a crowd.
Any town nearby would be okay, also, but may be more expensive.
I am not looking for anyting fancy at all. Just good food and a relatively nice place. I am on a budget.
Thanks for any help!

Should we change the thread name to NJ Health Checks? Otherwise no one would know it is more than Bergen.
-
If someone wants some other town/county, and has the site, let me know and I'll try to post it every month or so.

Pitter, what type of heirlooms did you grow from seed? I'm doing the same thing. My garden is not nearly as big as yours and it is my first time growing from seed.
When is everyone putting their tomato plants in the ground?
-
Let me get this straight, you made reservations at 3 different places on one of the busiest nights of the year. Even with the courtesy of canceling you fail to give the other restaurants time to rebook. I don't mean to be disrespectful but I think that's lousy. Restaurants plan NY Eve for weeks, confirm, plan menus based on how many people we have booked and then order food based on how many we have reservations. Give that a little thought next time a holiday comes around.
The reservations were made weeks ago and if my first choice of restaurant had come up with their menu earlier than the week before New Year's, I would never had made the reservation. And 5 PM is NOT a popular time on New Years.
Maybe you didn't mean to be disrespectful, but you have no idea of the cirucumstances. You automatically believed that I would hold three reservations at one time and cancel at the last moment which is NOT what happened. Why would you assume that?
-
We had reservations for Formia's first, changed it to Cosimo's, then decided, after all of that, to go to Vinnie's. Go figure. It was very good tho. Our New Year is usually extremely low keyed, and with the snow, we were afraid to go too far. Formia's had a fixed menu at $45 (for 5 PM seating) and $60 for later seatings. Cosimo's had seatings at 5 and 7PM (I think) and had their regular menu. Vinnie's had their regular menu, also, and we were pleased with our choice. It was odd, tho, being in a pizza place on New Year's. We ate late in the afternoon (5 PM) and the restaurant was practically empty (probably due to the snow and/or time of day). This was very nice, tho, as we had excellent service and were able to linger and enjoy our meal.
On my way now to a house party next door.
Happy New Year everyone!

Thank you SO MUCH. I will give these a try....
If I am brave enough, I will even try the rolling pin part.
Recently, I watched a show on TV with children rolling out dough. I was mortified
-
I didn't realize it was not a good recipe. I thought it was something I was doing wrong. The recipe came from a friend and her cookies come out wonderful. Just couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong when she wrote it down verbatim. Of course, it was written on an envelope....
-
I need to pick your brains.... please?
As some of you know, I am NOT great in the kitchen.
I have typed below, a very basic cookie recipe someone gave me. It is my only cookie recipe (besides what I've seen on this thread). Can someone please gussy-up this recipe for me? If you can make it better, PLEASE tell me what to do, and how your changes will affect my recipe.
My recipe:
1 stick butter
1/4 cup sugar
(cream together)
1 yolk
(cream again)
1 cup flour
(mix together)
chill one hour. form into balls, put on lightly greased baking sheets and bake for 12 minutes at 365 (365?? eeek!).
This basic recipe makes very few cookies and I must quadruple the recipe to get about 35 cookies.
Any and all help would be appreciated.
May you all have happy holidays and a healthy and prosperous New Year!
Thanks, again, for everyone's help and your patience with me in the past (and future )
-
Very impressive!!!! Thanks, so much!
-
OK, now for another silly question: What, exactly, is a "strata?"
When I looked in Epicurious, I used the search terms eggs, sausage, cheese, casserole. Not knowing what a strata is, I didn't incorporate the word into the search. I just used the word "casserole."
I'm serving at least 15 for breakfast.
Daniel, your eggs look yummy.
And Andie thanks for the link.
Thanks, everyone, for your help. This site is addicting!
PS - Never mind. I found what a strata is.
-
Can someone point me to a casserole recipe which includes sausage, egg and cheese that I can serve to my family on Christmas Day? I've looked in both the epicurious and Jimmy Dean websites, but do not know what I'm looking for. It needs to be appealing to both adults and kids and I'd like to assemble it the night before.
Any suggestions? If there is a recipe on this site, please tell me how to find it (I'm not familiar with this site).
Thanks in advance!
-
Samantha, would you mind sharing the lemon recipe, also?
-
Wow - the green tea and the thumbprint sound great! (I love anything with lemon or practically any kind of fruit!)
-
Ling, I know I don't need a rolling pin to roll dough into logs - I'm not that bad!!!
I'm just looking for ways to AVOID the rolling pin.
-
Thank you all!!
I was thinking maybe I could roll the dough if I can into a log and slice. That might be better.
I've never handled a rolling pin before.
However, it IS the crispy/crunchy cookie that I prefer over the soft and it may be that the only way to get that texture is to roll.....
-
The best thing, besides being easy, is that both your mom and dad can have WHATEVER type/flavor of coffee they want. Within seconds of each other. Practically no wait time. My dad gets his regular and I get my decaf flavored. Very simple. I do not allow my dad to fill the tank - he cannot see well and will completely miss the tank and probably cause problems. I fill the tank when necessary. But he's very happy he can make his own fresh cup of coffee as often as he wants. And I don't have to worry about another pot of coffee being burnt down to nothing from sitting on a hot plate all day (he forgets to turn off the coffee). This is an expensive machine, but well worth the convenience and independence it gives my dad.
-
Someday I hope they make a K-cup for hot chocolate..... for now, I'm just going to have to make it the old way!!!!
I've had this machine for a while. I love it. I went way overboard on K-cups but I like most of them!!! I have a huge variety now for the holidays.
As you mentioned, I purchased this machine mostly because of my dad (age 90). He can use this machine easily and not get too confused with it.
The K-cups are expensive, but I buy from Coffeewhiz.com and they give you free shipping on orders over $50. They are located in New Jersey and give excellent service. Amazon gives you free shipping on orders over $25, but their selection is poor compared to Coffeewhiz. (I am not affiliated with Coffeewhiz in any way - I just like their prices and service.)

Which of these recipes are crispy or crunchy cookies? I don't like soft or chewy cookies. I'd love to try some of these recipes (easy ones, please). They sound so good!!!!
Another question: if a recipe calls for rolling out the dough and cutting with cookie cutter, can I adapt the recipe into a drop cookie? Any suggestions how? Meaning how much dough, how to adapt cooking time, temp, etc.????
I have never rolled out a dough in my life (can you tell I'm not an experienced baker? )
My Dad's 90th Birthday
in New Jersey: Dining
Posted
Yes, on Broad Street. They have a room big enough for 75 (buffet only) guests and a DJ. It was the least expensive place I found, PLUS they had an elevator (my dad can barely walk). I am going there tonight for dinner.
Thank you everyone for your help!
