  1. Just an update. Its been almost a year since construction started. Today our GE Profile French Door fridge is being replaced(free of charge). We got a lemon!! Since last October, I've had repair people out here 8 times. We've also been reimbursed 100.00 on 2 separate occasions for lost groceries. I hope this new one is better!!
  2. Yep, there were mashed spuds on the shepard's pie. What can I do though? They expect it for Thanksgiving. The squash casserole is from the Kraft.ca foodmagazine( it is sent out free). I'll be changing up the recipe though as it calls for Miracle Whip( vile) and ritz crackers. I found the recipehere.. Christine gave me some panko, so I'll use that, and some mayo, maybe a few warm spices too. The last few years I've made Stove-top and dressed it up. They loved it. At our meeting, we were told to use bread so I've been buying day-old bread and freezing it. On Wednesday, I'll dice it up and stale it in the oven. I'll use broth, butter, celery and onions. I'll probably use poulty seasoning in it as well.
  3. Next week is the Thanksgiving meal( Canadian Thanksgiving is Oct 13th). It seems kinda dumb that we're cooking a Thanksgiving meal on a Thursday and then these folks will probably eat another one on Sunday( all the people I know here have their Thanksgiving on Sunday rather than the official Monday). But, since I dont make the rules, I have to go along with it. I've already ordered turkey roasts( light and dark meat) from a local turkey farm. Last year, they were 3.69lb, this year 4.75lb. I've ordered 18lbs for my program and I expect about 32ppl. I'll be roasting them on Wednesday and reheating on Thursday, The rest of the menu Mashed potatoes stuffing butternut squash casserole Green bean casserole cranberry sauce( scratch) and a Jello salad. eG member Pookie gave me a church recipe book from nearby Crediton( her mom grew up there) and I found a recipe for a Cherry supreme salad. It sounds good to me. I'll go make that the day before as well. Dessert is purchased pumpkin pies from M and M meat shop. They're 2.50 each. I can't even make a pie for that. They had them last year and they like them. I was going to make Libby's pumpkin roll cake, but the coordinator said that on the survey they had mentioned pumpkin pie. So I though " why go to all that trouble". Comments?
  4. Cook's Illustrated has a recipe from NY crumb cake. Its sooooo amazing. I'll PM you the recipe.
  5. I'm sure it was better on the second night anyway!!
  6. I've had a huge bag of russets down in the basement since June. They're still good. I did see a neat trick in an old issue of Cusine @ Home magazine. Use two of those magazine storage holders( find ones that are plastic, with holes in them). It looked pretty cool. Like this
  7. I'm Jewish and the only time I've ever had it was @ Passover!! eta: 6.99lb for baby carrots???? Puhlease!!
  8. I did xmas baking last year. I offered S, M and L tins of cookies or squares or mixed tins. I also offered English Toffee in S, M and L tins. I visited an eG member and she helped( more like she did all the work) with the toffee. I used E. Guittard chocolate and it was VERY popular. I also offered a couple different cakes and cheesecakes as well as dog treats. Lastly, I did banana, pumpkin and cranberry breads. I took orders for a good month and set a pickup date of Dec 16th. I froze some extra tins too, just in case. After buying ingredients, I made about $500.00. There is a pic of one of my tins in the Christmas Cookie thread. eta: Pic PM me with your email address and I'll give you a copy of my flyer. Last year, I had so many requests for Christmas Cake( fruitcake). I plan on putting an ad in the paper this year for that.

  10. Wow, I wish I had that problem. My very old cuisinart( with a new blade) never fully proccesses any cookies/crackers for crumbs. I always have chunks.
  11. Yes, I really really do( it might be a texture thing). I love cooked tomato sauce though and I dont mind the odd piece of tomato in a stew. I also love tomato soup.
  12. Thats a great idea. I have a huge sage bush outside. Thanks!!
  13. For me, I'd have to say its canning. I love canning jams, salsa's, sauces etc because I'm thrifty like that and I love giving them for gifts. But, I hate raw tomatoes and I dont really eat that much jam.
  14. I should probably start thinking about my seniors in those terms eh?
  15. That sounds yummy. Do you remember what issue the recipe was in? I have C@H annual issues(2005, 2006 and 2007)
  16. I'm friends with the butcher!! Seriously though, pork is really, really cheap here. This was a special order the store got in and I was sold a case of them( 12 packages, 2 in each pack) for 24.00.
  17. I got this info from CH. What do you think of this UWS tour? Start at Grandaisy bakery on 72nd and B'way and try the pizza bianca and whatever else might appeal. (Check out Grey's Papaya next door for hot dogs.) http://www.grandaisybakery.com/ Walk a block up Amsterdam to Jacques Torres chocolates http://www.mrchocolate.com/ Head west to Broadway to check out Fairway and Citarella. Don’t miss Zabar upstairs for cooking equipment at very good prices with a very knowledgeable staff. Keep walking north on Broadway to Zabars, passing Grom, Beard Papa, and H&H on the way. Then over to Barney Greengrass at Amsterdam and 86th Street. Don’t know where specifcally—or when—about the Super Taco Truck; maybe someone else can add more info. Hit Murray's Sturgeon (90th and Broadway) for any of their smoked fish or Barney Greengrass (Amsterdam and 86th St) whose lox, eggs and onions are amazing as well as their fish too! Magnolia Bakery at 69th and Columbus. Soutine Bakery on W 70th between Broadway and Columbus (closer to Columbus) Then on to Silver Moon Bakery at Broadway and 105th. http://www.silvermoonbakery.com/ Add the new Grandaisy Bakery on 72nd off of Amsterdam for a slice of potatoe/rosemary pizza. And I think Absolute Bagels on B'way around 106 are the best bagels on the UWS.
  18. Yes, Yes, Yes!! You do understand.
  19. There are non-spicy items that are done very well at Grand Sichuan, though you do have a point. It depends how non-spicy is meant by not spicy, I suppose. There are lots of good items at GS that aren't spicy, including veggies and that lamb dish. ← well..it's kind of a castrated way to eat Sichuan food. long experience has taught me that when someone says they don't eat spicy food it means that they REALLY don't....and that they'll even notice heat where chiliheads can't even detect it. consider that about 75% of people who say they "like spicy food" can't actually handle Sichuan heat. ← This is one point I'll totally agree with you on. I can't handle ANY spice at all.
  20. I might be interested in some really good fried chicken places. I'm not a big fan, but Robin loves it.
  21. There are non-spicy items that are done very well at Grand Sichuan, though you do have a point. It depends how non-spicy is meant by not spicy, I suppose. There are lots of good items at GS that aren't spicy, including veggies and that lamb dish. ← This is a good point because I dont eat spicy. The Friday dinner at Heartland Gathering in August was held at a Sichuan place. I initially questioned whether or not I should attend, and I was told that there will be "mild" items. Wrong, nothing was mild, I ended up having to order something " gringo" from the regular menu so I could eat. Besides the spicy, it was very red meat heavy( including lamb). I much prefer Cantonese or Hunan type of Chinese food.
