  1. Ahem, actually yes I do pronounce it Toron-toe. And I am a Canadian, born in Vancouver. ← OIC...you must live in a better neighbourhood than I ← Just down the street in the West End!?! ← Just joking, Anne...I honestly usually only hear that from foreigners, but I meant no disparagement...(I speak like who knows what, having lived here, back east, in the US...)

  3. Oh, and do any of you pronounce it Toron-toe? I've never heard a Canadian say it that way, always Taranna, really...
  4. I was laughing out loud at the waiter in the bushes scene near the end though. Does that really go on in Yaletown? I'm not usually out on the seawall after dark
  5. My mum got me one of those fork things that looks like a garden tool, and it works very well for me with the smaller Callebaut blocks. I am also a huge proponent of the put-substance-in-a-plastic-bag-and-whack-or-rolling-pin-it-into-submission method.
  6. Gourmet Warehouse has them from time to time, but they sell out quickly, so call first.
  7. OMG I think it's pretty bad. Pretty damn bad. Yeah I have to say, what the heck is going on in that kitchen? nobody's cooking much! and the little thing with the manager girl dancing before commercial...yeesh! She's never make it as a hostess at Earl's either! on any count! may be bad enough to be funny; I haven't decided yet.
  8. Too bad they can't spell barista properly...should have known that from that whole 'hood issue. (Oh, and this only applies if you didn't re-type it, Andrew!! )
  9. Wow, spoilerama! Is there anything she didn't give away?! Does anyone happen to know what time it's on? I'm not missing West Wing for that, for sure.
  10. I'm still recovering from my newest favourite place to drink: Celebrities on cheap highball night (Tuesday). Funnest best dancing, especially if there's a Punk Rock Boy™ to dance with you One of these days must try the Caprice 80s night (also Tuesday). Don't know if there are drinks specials though.
  11. Pretty sure you're talking about Ichibankan on Thurlow, they have a floating conveyor belt thing, my brain isn't functioning yet today
  12. You're quite right, I don't mind that either! Sorry, I was picturing another kind of metal altogether.
  13. I spent many a night at the Peel Pub, trying desperately not to "break the seal." I liked their pizza.
  14. I don't want to notice anything, in a "nice" restaurant. I don't want to see your pierced navel (I don't really want to see your navel at all, actually, or your g-string, or that oh-so-individualistic tattoo that you and every other person under the age of 30 appears to be wearing these days across the lower back). I certainly don't want to be able to know that your nipples are pierced (either gender). And somehow nose piercings don't do it for me in the dining room. It's all a matter of placement though, as none of those things would bother me in a bar or a cafe or on the street, although tongue piercings always make me think of infections, and skeeve me no matter where I see them. I'm 38, and most of my friends have tattoos and I think I have the fewest piercings (only one in each ear) of any girl I know...
  15. 40 for a cocktail party, 32 max for a sit down but the side section where you were the other night can hold up to 55. When exectly ? or did you put that down upthread. ← No, I didn't put it as I don't know...the cool thing about your room of course is the pool table, eh? I'm pretty sure they want a sit down, though. Hmm, I will add you to the list :) Gingerbread may outweigh the need to have those pesky other 8 people
  16. I actually already mentioned that to him, Andrew ...I will encourage them to look at it.
  17. Quel annoying website alors!!!! Almost as bad as Saltlik, which has lowered the bar to new depths. It sounds like a good possible location though, thanks Lee.
  18. Oh, and Neil, how many people fit in your private room?
  19. Picking your collective brains once again: A co-worker's niece is graduating soon, and her mum wants to throw a party for around 40 persons, family and friends, maybe a bit trendy, dinner and whatnot. They would like a private room if they could; I think they'd also like somewhere that won't entirely break the bank, but on the other hand, not the Spaghetti Factory. I'm thinking Fiction maybe? ...he was wondering about Brix. We would just like a few ideas to float with the mum (who will be the decision-maker). If you don't mind and I am also telling them about your service, Eric!
  20. Deborah (not Debra) is into Radiohead. Not sure how she feels about Beck. Think it's time to kill this tread A. ← How did I miss this for so long!!! Keith, I'm laughing out loud. I've seen Beck live more times than Radiohead, in fact. If seeing my name brings Beck to mind, hey, I'm cool with that. New album out shortly. On topic (kinda), does anyone know what Zankou Chicken is?
  21. They had better be the best steakhouse EVAR after foisting the torture device known as their website on an unsuspecting public. Ye gods and little fishes!
  22. I wsa thinking of Mu when this thread was originally posted, as the suffix -mu in Greek means dear or some comparable term of endearment: someone named Christo, you would say Christo-mu...I don't know if it means anything on its own though, and I'm not working with any Greeks right now so I don't have a Greek-speaking resource!
  23. Last night as I was dropping off to sleep (good God, why am I thinking of eGullet as I drop off to sleep??) I was thinking of the Flirt-as-a-restaurant-name idea, and wondered how a restaurant would do (probably in Yaletown or actually maybe in the West End) if it were called Flirt, and served items for two only: rather than small plates, only share plates, fondues, milkshakes with two straws...there would have to be an exception for individual wineglasses, but I think you get the idea. Only deuces, business would be great Friday and Saturday and Valentine's Day, but could it sustain the whole week long as a "date destination"?
