  1. Copy of my post on DR.com: Stopped in yesterday during the arts festival for a quick lunch. My husband and I each had a small cod and split a small order of fries. I was trying all things to dip including the Kitty O'Shea, Cheasapeake, malt vinegar and ketchup! (I'm a dipper, what can I say?) Along with 2 soft drinks it was $16. It was plenty and plenty good. Although the place was jumping, we waited less than 10 minutes for our order and managed to snag a couple of stools along the wall. What a great addition to Old Town. ...2 big thumbs up, folks!
  2. As Bilirus noted above, McCormick and Schmick in Reston Town Center. http://www.mccormickandschmicks.com/index....pageid=96&id=40 see sample menu
  3. DiBruno Bros. lists it on thier website, but I'd call to see if they stock it, or only have it online. http://www.dibruno.com/Detail.bok?no=8
  4. I haven't tried this yet, but it sounds like it makes sense to me. And, please everyone, don't throw tomatoes my way for suggesting that Rachael Ray (I apologize) grates raw onion into her burgers and she stands by it saying that it does the trick for a moist burger. *exits quickly*
  5. OK, here goes a possible solution since the emulsification might not be as good as it could given thier method. And I believe that buttermilk is usually no more than 1% fat, so you're ok there. Reference from foodtv.com: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/cda/articl...L-PRINT,00.html I suggest you try blending all your ingredients except the oil and buttermilk. Slowly stream in the oil to get a nice emulsification. Lastly add the buttermilk until just blended and stop. Hope this works! BTW....I would recommend that this dressing stay refrigerated because it may spoil/ get contaminated at room temp. I could be wrong, but just a precaution.
  6. I've gotten strange looks when I put ketchup on my mac n cheese. The cheap kind, not homemade. I also love to dip cold leftover chicken in ketchup.
  7. I love that pic from your balcony. Oh heck, I wish that would happen here in the DC area!! Both of your blogs are wonderfull.Great job and thank you!
  8. I am having bad luck with my tomatoes. I'm growing 2 plants in containers. One grew freakishly tall and is just now showing tiny fruit. the other one has about a half dozen tomatoes that are far from picking. I"ve moved them to full sun and am giving them the proper food< so that helps>
  9. That is too cute! Great food pic! ← Oh thanks! We actually have found that he begs LESS if we put him on our bench and allow him to look. Oh of course! he gets little scraps as do our other two dogs who are far more well behaved to beg like the little white one.
  10. Tonight I made a salad of leftover flank steak, tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, onions carmelized with balsamic, cheddar cheese and carrots. Tops with bottled blue cheese dressing and coveted by my little white dog: Leftover cheddar corn chowder:
  11. I think that this was hte first time they had ever eaten bottled BBQ sauce, I usually make up my own ose a recipe from one of Ina Garten's (Barefoot Contessa) books. I found the recipe you were referring to, right here. I am going to have to give it a try. My dad uses BBQ sauce like ketchup, just today for lunch he ate the leftover rice with some of my fried chicken all covered in a sauce he 'created' with BBQ sauce, ketchup and salsa mixed together. When I was a his favorite sandwich was a thick slice of gooseliver with mayo, peanut butter and pickles... ← I make Ina's bbq sauce a lot. It is my absolute favorite. But I also change it up from time to time and use bottled. I use the recipe from Foodtv.com "chicken barbecue". It took me forever to find it due to the "barbecue" spelling. Being from Philadelphia (and Polish) I have had some really great home made pierogi's. They are not seen too much in the DC area where I live now. I've ordered from Buffalo and Pittsburgh so far. It's very much worth it, for me! Are there any good pierogi places who ship from your area? anyone? Thanks. edit to add: I love your blogs Kris and am going to read this one cover to cover!

  13. Roast Pork Italian from DiNic's in Philadelphia's Reading Terminal Market: And a pannini from DiBruno Bros, also Philly. This HUGE sandwich was roast beef with a horseradish cream sauce and cheese. Along with salads it was wonderful:
  14. Big plump shrimp and fresh cilantro? Yum! Bring it on. Did it taste bad or something? Because, it looks very appealing.
  15. Regarding Louisa's, they take reservations beginning Tuesday at 4. You can only reserve from Tuesday to Tuesday. I called last night and was told since I asked for a ressy for NEXT Tuesday, I'd have to wait until next Tuesday at 4 to make it. We'll probably be going back to Gecko's and the Lobster House. The Black Duck is on our list as well.
  16. I was just involved in a shoot for a food TV show last week. They DO wash their hands, you just never see it. Everything that's not foodfoodfood gets edited out. And they take like, a million takes of every single step, so something as seemingly mundane as hand washing doesn't ever make it on screen. Also, I found it interesting that the director, the camera guys, sound guys, etc etc, weren't food people AT ALL. Not even a little bit. They don't care about showing stuff like washing hands, all they want are the pretty shots. There was lots of other surprising stuff I learned about how those food shows get made, but that's another post entirely. ← I assume that RR's 30 minute meals is done in real time, or am I just being naive? I realize that other shows need multiple shots for close-ups etc, and can be painstaking.
  17. Daniel, I love, LOVE your road trips! Will you be doing I95 around the Richmond, Va/DC area?
  18. Thanks Sandy for this wonderful blog, which to me is truly a gift as a native Philadelphian. I don't know if I'll ever return for good, but I do visit often and when I do, prefer to visit the classics and local places that bring back old memories, vs. eating at a SS restaurant or whatever tragically hip place is lurking beyond the velvet ropes . I would have liked to have seen the Crystal Tea Room as well. Growing up, my Mom would take me into CC, from the Bethayers Station to the old terminal. We'd go and see theater shows at the Academy of Music, shop at Wannamakers and always have lunch in the Crystal Tea Room. I can never eat a club sandwich and not think of that place*getting misty here*. That was my de facto meal. Perhaps your next blog, which I look forward to immensly. Cheers.
  19. I'm sure they'll taste even better today. Mmmmmmmmmm....tamales!
  20. Oh how comfort food, with the gouda mashed taters! Let us know how it turns out.
  21. Wow Sandy, this blog is great. I love that you are covering culture, transport, architecture, education as well as food. I'm a native Philadelphian, and having grown up in the NE section, it is quite an education for me even, to learn about the other burbs I'd never been to. Looking forward to the rest! Cheers.
  22. Jaymes, Scalloped potatoes and ham was one of my absolute favorites that my Mom made! Takes me back...
