  1. dimsumfan, it has been so long since I went to Oaxaca, but there was a lot of good food to be had as well as good beaches, on the south/west coast (not sure these are in Oaxaca or not). My most memorable meals are five (I started with three) 1) a little place on the town square in the city of Oaxaca, we ate the fresh salsa - I think they had several types but the pico de gallo was amazing ...we kept going back! 2) someplace written up for mole, the sauce was NOT to my liking, gritty and I was carefully keeping it seperate from my rice/chicken, when the proprieter came by and showed me how to eat it, but mixing i into my food! Oh well, I do recall being thinner then! 3) a spot that specialized in little snacks, we went there for a late lunch and had many small items, I seem to recall it is on the way out of town towards the ruins, but I could be wrong. 4), we went to the beach first Puerto Angel and then Huatulco. In Puerto Angel, we ate under the shade of a palapa on the beach, fresh fish simply prepared with local fruits and veggies. Beer out of an ice bucket - we thought we were in heaven! Lastly - In Hualtulco, we stayed at a big hotel, Sheraton or some such, and it was just getting built up. We had been travelling on the cheap until then, so the hotel was a big spluge. We went into town for dinner and every restaurant was trying to entice us in with tequila. Suffice to say, we ended up somewhere with delicious food, freshly grilled meats, fresh salsa and tons of shrimp! The proprietor was so happy we were eating in town and not at the hotels, because so many tourists just want a burger at the hotel! It was very interesting to discuss this. After dinner they brought us their signature drink something with kahlua, strawberries and tequila, sounds terrible but was really delicious. Fly out of Oaxaca, we couldn't get trains too many problems - best to just pay up and get there fast. Have a great trip and tell us what you find.
  2. If you will have a car, (or if renting one for some excursions), then I recommend heading out to Cape Ann or other north shore haunts, my favorite is Woodman's in Ipswich - get a lobster on a paper plate - it is the only way to do it! Also great things like fried clams etc. enjoy!
  3. Not only here but in other locations I'm suddenly hearing about Ba Guo Bu Yi. Last September they seem to have been replaced. If anyone knows where the chef has gone - let me know please! I really like the way they do dan dan noodles and certain Szichuan dishes... I miss that place!

    Coffee Man

Exactly the same as mine. Exactly the same as each other's ← Kind of funny, are you sure Gregory knows how bad his coffee is? Makes me glad I only have to trek across Vancouver and not across London for the great coffee I can get! Enjoyed the story, reminded me of how silly we all are about where to live!
  5. OMG, I'm still full! Thanks for blogging Deborah, it has been most fun to see and hear from your perspective (including the new Wolf!). You and have done an excellent job highlight Vancouver foods in a new way!
  6. I think of you when I see a whack of Pocky! ← hey, what flavor are those black and silver Pocky? Hmmn, can I T n T before they close tonight? Have you tried them yet? S your stove is making me drool - but I am getting my new dishwasher installed as I type - so I'm trying to be calm. ← Black Sesame! of course they're good! I'm not sure how late the downtown one is open. I think the one on 1st Ave is open till 9:00. A new dishwasher to go with your new fridge, eh? sounds like you're having a sweet little reno too! Blog note: due to either some strange wizardry or perhaps the contractor turning off the wrong breaker switch when putting a dimmer on the dining room fixture, my G4 is having some dreadful hiccups getting restarted after an improper shutdown...so I may be stuck with my laptop prepare for typos! ← How have I missed those black sesame Pocky until now? Hmmn, tomorrow a.m. will have to secure a box! yes, getting rid of crappy appliances our house' former owners felt the need to buy! not a reno, but our kitchen is like a different room with the new refrigerator and the new dishwasher is just an attept to have cleaner dishes - nothing compared to what you are doing! No Wolfe here, snif! Enjoying the blog and sorry to hear about your 'puter - if you need diagnostics we are well connected.

  8. Ok, it is crazy at work today, but I took five minutes out to see the first of the blog - go Deborah! Kitchen looks fab! I would be jealous but I just got my new Fisher and Paykel today - refrigerator bliss! These little things make life 'in the burbs' worth living! [for those who do not know Vancouver, Deborah is not really in the suburbs, just compared to downtown highrise living ...] Blog on - but I had to post - you need some real coffee (meow) for a kitchen warming present - I must spend some coffee time with you! Finger Foods for 30

Many successes and a few failures - 95% egg free and 100% sea creature free! To all who suggested, many thanks, I used ideas and merged into my own. We had a Spanish feel and theme, although not everyone noticed ... maybe the gold balloons fooled them. Food was definately a highlight for many - here is what I did: Roasted orange pepper hummus with assorted veggies for crudite skewers of fruit with mango, yellow watermelon, honeydew, pineapple and black and red grapes savory scones with smoked ham and some sharp sheep cheese served with a tomato chutney (homemade of course) phyllo triangles with minted spinach and feta phyllo triangles with mushroom / cream cheese filling - these were the best item! puff pastry roll ups with ricotta, sun dried tomatoe and olives puff pastry roll ups with cheese/ham and roasted peppers little home-made sausages (for the meat lovers) savory cheese 'cake' (purchased from local caterer) chicken salad in endive cups and on baguette rounds tea sandwiches for sweets, lemon shortbread (no eggs!) pistachio and dried fruit biscotti chocolate dipped strawberries - yum and fun! mini choc. chip cookies ginger loaf cake and (because of a special 7 year old) a chocolate ganache cake. Strangely not much wine was drunk, a lot of people had to drive, but fizzy water with a little fruit juice was a big hit. My cucumber water was a bust - oh well. I believe a good time was had by all - renewed experience in how much to make - e.g. how much not to make! Sent a lot of leftovers home with bride to be, and with mother of bride and with my 'hired' help ... plus we are eating mini heart shaped savory scones for lunch ...
  10. If you haven't tried Hendricks gin, I recommend trying before deciding on a house brand. It makes a lovely martini. I haven't done a good comparison, e.g. side by side blind tastes of several, but it is my new favorite. Have fun! And let us know what cocktails you come up with for your signature drinks. One of our local restaurants, uses house made sorbet in a number of their drinks. This really makes their coctails stand out amoung the crowd!
  11. Not only do I say CAKE! I would aslo venture to say those who are voting for pie may not have ever had a really good cake! ...that must be another thread
  12. There is a large jar in my fridge for the taking ! Just doesn't cut it compared to what one can find locally if one tries, I'm sure there must be some great sources in NYC!

Does she have a problem with eggs as an ingredient (such as in egg wash) or is it just eating eggs as eggs? My husband will not eat eggs, but he has no problem with them when they're used as binders (like in meatballs) or as a glaze. I would guess that she probably won't know the difference if you used egg wash, but it is still a no no, I suggest using a little cream. ← It is an alergy or food sensitivity ... I just realized that besides fruit I'm not any dessert is on a list of things she can enjoy ... I was going to make some 3 nut biscotti, but I need egg whites at least for that. Not sure what to do, but will use cream for closing/brushing the puff pastry.
  14. Eatrustic, you have inspired me to call KnifeEx too - I was sadly unable to hit the Granville store for sharpening, well sad before I read your post! Does anyone know if the person who travels to the farmers markets (last year) knows how to sharpen?

is this just for taste and texture, or is there another reason? (curious as i've never heard about this rule before) ← My experience is in texture and ability to sit out without getting runny at room temp. Daniel may have different experience/knowledge.

Daniel - Thanks so much, I appreciate those finger sandwich ideas! All, I'm wondering how to 'glue' the puff pastry without egg. Is water the best idea or a little butter?

Thanks everyone, lots of great idea! I'm starting to short list the following items: phyllo triangles with different fillings mushroom and spinach/feta; puff pastry pinwheels -mediterrean fillings (e.g. Spanish) but can't decide exactly what; savory scones with tomato jam/chutney; tea sandwiches - one version with cucumbers, one with avocado and ? and a third ...; curried chicken salad in 'edible cups'; bruschetta; a cheese thing - either a small cheese plate or possibly a goat cheese and sundried tomato molded item - something fun; veggie crudite and dip - just in case people actually want something healthy; fruit skewers; chocolate dipped strawberries biscotti and maybe thin ginger cookie sandwiches filled with lemon cream possibly one more dessert Am I crazy? Most of this is make ahead except for a few things that need to be done day of etc.

    Finger Foods for 30

Good idea Rebecca, my plan is to make everything 100% finger food so no utensils needed. I don't actually know the brides top five foods (I don't even think I know my own top five foods!), and I don't want to bug her with little details. So, I'll keep researching. Ideally I'm looking for interesting and make ahead items, things that use a food for a container are good, like the use of cucumber cups for little bites of gazpacho etc..
  20. Please help, I'm reading through the various threads in search of ideas for a spring party - it will be a bridal shower and the bride does not eat any fish or seafood, nor does she eat eggs. So can we still serve these things? AND ideas of easy to prepare or purchase, not too costly but fun finger foods are most welcome. thanks in advance - S
  21. I was shocked to see Buddy's gone from GI market today too ! I hope it is not just for seating, and that someone else takes up a permanent space, although I did notice more seating on the other side near the Stock Market today too - maybe the extra seating is a trend. Re; Stuart's they do have extremely good Hamentaschen, not sure where they get them from though - if anyone knows PM me please.
  22. I'll get me travel journal out on the weekend and send you some names of spots. Beware in Venice, there are oh so many tourist traps! Favorite sit down spot is La Zucca. I also know of a fabulous pizza and foccacia bakery. The thing the locals do is eat little plates at the bars for dinner. I know of a great Sicilian place in Rome - in my mind it is a must dine at location - I am sure I have posted on it, but not sure which thread. PM me if you don't see a post in a few days.
  23. new Pho in town ... anyone been to the place on the corner of 30th and Main - it was philipino and recently reinveted itself as a Pho house, just noticed it yesterday (I guess I have been walking past with my eyes closed! Let me know if it is good, and if I don't here, I'll treck out for lunch one of these days.
  24. Shelora, I have definately purchased Gaeta olives here in Vancouver. I'll look around next time I shop, I think it was from the Mediterrean market on Commercial. Le Amis probably has them too - they have a lot of olives, but no display space for them so I always forget to get them there! Olives here in N. America are just not the same! It is sad, but I eat few olives here because they are just not as good as the ones you can purchase anywhere in Europe or other lands ... in fact I never liked olives until I travelled to the middle east! Alphonso is a far cry from Gaeta - so the dish would be completely different ... in my opinion.

    Savory Oatmeal

dockhl, seems you have experienced steel cut oats, and other oat shapes and sizes, but for your original idea, and for general eating, oat groats are great! They are the whole oat and I do not understand why they are so hard to find. We have them here in one of our bulk stores, organic to boot. They look like medium brown color of med-long grain rice but with more tapered ends. Worth looking for.
