    Lunch! (2003-2012)

I had an incredible grilled vegetable sandwich and a cup of potato soup.
  2. I live in a community that was completely "dry" until 2000. Now we have liquor by the drink, but all establishments selling liquor must have a 70/30 profit split in favor of food. I think it's silly, cause it seems to encourage people to overcharge on food and have really cheap drink specials. I wish the town would just relax so I wouldn't have to drive 20 minutes each way (and across state lines) for a bottle of wine.
  3. Brownies and other squares usually get torn. Small cookies I'll bite. Today for lunch I had a large chocolate chip cookie--it got snapped in half first. I never really thought about it too much as an etiquette issue, just the way I prefer to eat them.

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

Hummus, with carrot and celery to dip and two oranges on the side.

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

Southern cooking for me today. Chicken pot pie, carrots, cabbage, fresh rolls with honey butter. I couldn't eat like this every day, but once in awhile it's quite nice.
  6. I dumped a guy who insisted that all three meals must come from a drive-thru. He'd grown up on Chicken McNugget happy meals and French toast sticks, and apparently his taste buds never developed beyond that point. I think it ended when we tried to go to a reasonably-ok Italian place and he actually started whining because there were no chicken fingers to be found. He was 21 at the time. It took him entirely too long to find something he'd even consider eating, and he was cranky the rest of the night.
  7. I take comfort in learning how to properly handle meats. My mother is a terrific baker, but cooking is another story. Chicken with two lemons. My mother has never made a whole roasted chicken ever, but it's now my preference. Pork chops that are still moist and tender. Rare steaks. Anything with rice. Growing up, rice was reserved for those post-stomach bug days, and served plain or with milk and sugar. In the same vein, pasta. We were very much a meat, canned vegetables and potatoes family and pasta or rice were a rare treat for me.
  8. Don't leave the plastic utensils milimeters from the in-use stove burner. In the same vein: don't preheat the oven unless you're sure it's empty.
  9. Coke was booted off my campus earlier this semester, but it's strictly because of money, not student protesting. Pepsi offered a few thousand more to the University, so the Coke machines are now a thing of the past. I was always happy about the fact that we did have soft drink choice on campus, but now the lack of Coke is not a huge deal. Diet Dr. Pepper was and is my drink of choice if I'm forced to buy from the office machines.
  10. Have another meal to add to the list. One of my friends from work invited me to his house tonight, and said he was going to cook something from home (Indonesia). I eagerly accepted. I was served a rice-noodle dish (good), a curry-flavored version of tater tot casserole (not so good) and some sort of cake that managed to be salty, rubbery, yeasty and sweet at the same time. I choked down a bit and attempted to tell him it was good, but I think my expression gave me away!
  11. Revisiting this thread. Raisin Squares were a part of my childhood that I apparently forgot about until now. Mmm. Right now the only cereal I eat on a regular basis is Special K, and only at night.

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

Bland chicken and rice (I made it, so it's my own fault!). Mini-bag of M&Ms for dessert.

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

Turkey club and a small bread pudding from Victor's. I haven't had bread pudding in forever, and today's is delicious.
  14. Cereal, with lots of milk and sugar....so you can drink the sugary milk out of the bowl after you wolf down the cereal while it's still crispy. Floppy bacon. I worked midnights for quite a long time, so I used to wake up my roommates by cooking "lunch" at 4 or 5am. It's still normal for me to be eating an actual meal in the middle of the night. There's a local restaurant called the Log Cabin that is best eaten after dark or when intoxicated--I've been known to dash out for a to-go box of Biscuits and Gravy.

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

Today, a homemade plate of pad thai with shrimp and a big iced coffee. Mmm. I love not being in the office at lunchtime.

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

Caesar Salad (with pasta in it for some reason) and a cup of potato soup from a little place near campus. Not bad, not outstanding and under $6 with tea.
  17. I grew up in rural Nebraska in the 80s. Salad was somewhat rare for dinner. When it appeared, it was often nothing more than iceberg lettuce with dressing. Anyone familiar with Dorothy Lynch dressing? I can't remember exactly what flavor it was supposed to be. It was orange with lots of black specks and made somewhere in the state. That was my parents' preferred salad-drencher, while I rotated among the many flavors of Kraft. In the summer we had homegrown tomatoes on top. When I was 14 I stayed for dinner at a new friend's house. They had spinach salad, with homemade dressing. I fell in love. In the past ten years I've convinced my parents to give up iceberg for romaine and spinach leaf experimentation, but they still love their bottled dressing.

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

Battling a cold, so I had more chicken barley soup, with a bit more red pepper.

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

Double Cheese Melt from Quizno's on wheat, a diet dr. pepper on the side. It's all right--my food options in and around campus are very limited, and I forgot to pack my lunch.

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

Eating as I type this... Homemade chicken and barley soup, pita and hummus and a slightly bruised apple on the side.

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

Coworkers brought in lunch, so it ended up being chicken tacos and chips with guacamole, with some very bland sweet potato bread on the side. I felt funny all afternoon.
  22. Citrus, but especially lemons. I want to do curd this weekend. Beef. I rarely eat it, and would almost never plan a meal around it (normally), but the last two weeks have been loaded with it.

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

Some sort of vegetarian pot pie with black beans (Yay college cafeteria food) along with roasted potatoes, red pepper strips and a Diet Dr. Pepper.
  24. Guacamole doritos. Hash browns, started from raw potatoes, and left sorta soggy, just the way my Mom made them, alternately smothered in cheese and sauteed onions or just a big squirt of ketchup.
  25. I worked at Hardee's, Wendy's and Burger King during the summer after my freshman year of college. Hardee's was gross. There's no other way to describe this one. I quit after a grand total of 4 hours. Wendy's wasn't nearly as bad. It was pretty clean, the people were nice. I was working 4pm-2am, on drive thru. I remember one of my coworkers had a thing for putting plastic salad boxes in the deep fryer. The salad containers would shrink up to little 2x2 discs and get tossed about the kitchen for the rest of the night. They used to let me take home leftover pitas and tomatoes at night, and I lived on those and "borrowed" cups of Frosty while I was working there. I went to Burger King for July and August because they paid better. They were even cleaner, to the point of wiping down the little playground area with bleach water every night. We had the fastest drive-thru time in the district while I was there, and as long as we held that record we could have free meals during our shifts.
