  1. Thanks - I keep meaning to ask.
  2. Family and friends have been to Cafe Claude - all I got was a postcard. They all thought it was great for a touch of Paris in SF - but it can be smokey (or was - no smoking in California bars and restaurants anymore?)
  3. Maybe some trial runs at operation?
  4. Currently on sale at the pharmacy downstairs (Seattle- Bartell's) for $0.99 a box - 4 or 5 flavors.
  5. Bought 'em from Southern California to the Canadian border. They've been mentioned a few times throughout this thread...
  6. Now open 11:30 - 7:00 Monday-Saturday. The menu is still sandwiches and salads - but these are special. Here's the scoop, if my recall is good - Sarah was at Le Gourmand for 10 years (manager?) and partner Tim, is from Two Bells. Both have been in the biz for a long time. She received some counter stools as a gift - and took it as a sign that it was time to do it. And they did it the hard way - permitting and constructing the place themselves! They know food and product. Currently sourcing from Farmer's Markets - produce, cheese...mostly organic, lots of extra nice touches. Roast their own turkey, corned beef, make homemade soup...side choices include a good potato salad, the bean salad mentioned by tls, leeks vinagrette, Tim's Cascade Chips (why?), and maybe, soup. I had a Spicy Coppa sandwich ($7.50), grilled with Mama Lil's peppers, fresh tomato, and fontina, with the potato salad. And the sandwich theme continues to dessert - the only choice - a seasonal ice cream sandwich ($3.50), fresh peach ice cream (a little icey) between two delicious homemade chocolate wafers. Baby. They have hit the spot with the neighborhood - first name basis with almost all the customers and people walking by checking the place out. No beer/wine, yet. The place is colorful, casual, air conditioned (!), and friendly.
  7. Nope, just 2 cookies - neither macaroons. Ummm, gingersnaps and something else...
  8. Rover's Owner/Chef has just returned from a long vacation in France - probably a great time to go (not that I have been...)
  9. bringing this up for a new poster.
  10. Chef Shop has peppers: http://store.yahoo.com/chefshop/wholpiqfromn.html I thought of The Spanish Table too - but it isn't browser compatible for some reason. Luckily, I can walk to the original store.
  11. Striped shortbread. Which brand? Mother's aren't bad, but I want some that are better. These have enhanced appeal due to good memories of road trips with a friend.
  12. Better - the ones with DARK chocolate.
  13. Just bought 1 lb 10 oz dispenser of Spanish Sea Salt for $0.99. And some fine fresh pork shoulder for grilling.
  14. I think the recipe is in the first cookbook. I'll check tonight and report back - unless someone has their copy at hand?
  15. Formica is a brand name of high pressure decorative laminate as are Nevamar, Wilsonart, Pionite, Abet Laminati (very cool patterns) and others. All are intended to be used over a structural substrate. Some have solid color throughout, so you don't see the edge in contrast, some are chemical resistant, fire rated, or static-dissipative. Melamine is a thermoset decorative overlay - pre-laminated to substrate and far more limited in color and pattern. Too much information - but since we are supposed to pay attention to copyrights and registered brand names....
  16. Admiral reporting. Thanks!
  17. Wow - 3 blocks from where I grew up! But a long way from Seattle. (TMI?)
  18. TMI? (My text messaging vocabulary isn't very good.)

    Portuguese wines

I didn't get enough data off the bottle - I think it was a reserva - I recall checking when they went through the decanting process. Didn't get the year off the label either. I think it was pretty mild. He may have been trying to introduce us slowly. I know we sampled from a far number of regions, intentionally.
  20. Six degrees of separation - a friend used to date his ex-partner!

    Portuguese wines

I listed as many of the wines as I could remember to scribble down on my trip last March/April. But didn't give much qualitative information. The second half of the trip - in the Algarve - all the wines were selected by a knowlegeable Portuguese foodie. The last two (on the last night in Sangres) didn't please anyone at the table - otherwise, we were very happy with his selections. All fairly young, though the '98 was more memorable. Vinho Verde Casal Garcia Maria da Fonseca, Periquita (served with much ceremony) Caves Velhas, Dao Vinho branco seco reserva 2000 Douro Planalto Douro Doc Casa do Doura Reserva Douro 1999 by Sogrape Jose de Sousa 1998, vinho regional Alentejano (very good) Alentejo Borba Montes Claros Reserva 2000 Palha Canas Vinho Tinto 2001, Estremadura Casa Santos Lima (too tannic for me) Quinta dos Murcas 1999 Douro (too robust?) My own "house reds" by the half bottle - I was very happy with all them! Have a great time!
  22. I would have guessed Roy's would have been first. But think Tighe is right on the sushi abundance. Kimo - how'd you hear this - posted or written up?
  23. I was charmed by: A Tasquinha Chloe and all had some great sounding recommendations in the Northern area - see the thread from early 2003! There are a couple of planning at trip to Portugal ones.
  24. So what is pan-african? There is a new place on First Avenue - within the Market bounds - North of the Crumpet Shop a few doors. Also, up on Greenwood at 74th - another indi coffee house with Top Pot donuts and wi-fi. Groovy. Herkimer Coffee, if my memory serves. Open a few months already.
