Did you buy the kid for two Zuzim? My father got one for two Zuzim at Costco, but then the Angel of Death came, which killed the butcher, which slew the ox, that drank the water that quenched the fire, that burned the stick that beat the dog, which bit that damn cat that ate the kid my father bought for two Zuzim. Chad gadya, chad gadya Sorry. Too late in the year or too early for Passover humor.

The wraps are their "new" product, I haven't recieved samples of those yet. They are made of the same teflon material, but instead of a bag, they fold over with a snap and open up completely so they can be cleaned easier and can accomodate thicker sandwiches.

Jason, do you remember the bagel place on the corner of Union Tpk and Chevy Chase (just east of the Hillcrest Jewish Center)? I'm not sure what the name was, except it said "Hot Bagels" on the outside of the shop. We would pick them up every time we visited my Aunt who lived nearby. My father grew up right across the street from the HJC. His dad was the orthodontist, Jack Perlow, who was the president of the Nassau County Dental Society during the early '70s and who was one of the group of people that bought the doors of the HJC. I remember my grandfather getting bagels from that bagel store (the one near St John's, right?), going to services at the HJC and also the many times I ate at King Yum next door (which, BTW, is still an excellent chinese restaurant, is the oldest operating in the state, and makes the best eggrolls, spare ribs, and subgum wonton soup in the entire tri state area)

While not technically an Indian rum, I understand Khukri from Nepal is really good stuff. http://khukrirum.com I havent found it in the US yet, though.

Pretty much all the Queens/Brooklyn places that once made very good bagels in the 70's now suck because they switched to the high-volume steaming process versus the old-style boiling process. That combined with aversion to crust doneness destroyed the artisinal bagel store.

Growing up on the border of Nassau County and with most of my family living in Queens we always got our bagels from places in Little Neck, Douglaston or Hollis Hills. Union Turnpike was the Bagel capital of the world. Back in the day I remember these bagels being boiled, they were chewy, dense, and they were more well done then most bagels are today. As far as I am concerned they kicked the crap out of any bagels in NYC today, even the "good" ones.

They are. To fine restaurants and hotels which move a lot of product, yes. To midrange and smaller restaurants, no. I witnessed (and was able to participate in) one of these training sessions by the Don Perignon people at a hotel in New Orleans, for example. But I can't imagine some mom and pop restaurant getting the same kind of personal treatment.

Call Warner up, I'm sure he'll send you new ones. But you might want to send that toaster back while you are at it and make sure you get one with the ultra wide bagel slots.

pale ale is a type of beer. Do you know if the beer that is called for in the recipe is a light-colored beer, a tan colored beer, a dark beer/stout or a lager?

MSN Lexus has an article about Hot Doug's: http://lexus.msn.com/id/2090163/

I hope that was artistic license, Stone! Seriously these types of bagels are an abomination... I once saw a "pannetone" bagel once at one of these shi-shi bagel places... I wanted to take a flame thrower to the place!

But, can you get a "Double Double Double Truffle, Animal Style" ?

You guys are just too picky, lol.

The mind reels at the image of a loud, brash Texan wearing a cowboy hat, smoking a big fat cigar and sitting down for dinner at El Bulli and harassing the waitstaff due to the lack of burritos. "What? No burritos? What about fajitas? Don't you Spaniards cook anything us normal people like to eat? What's this foam shit?"

This type of behavior among modern Jewish families is what I like to refer as "Kosher of convenience" so not as to make any impression on people that you are bad Jews even though they will conveniently break the rules of Kashrut as they see fit and make up their own weird rules what cannot be eaten and when. Rachel's family is far more like this than my own, which for the most part is totally secular and has no problems with eating anything at any time and will prepare pork, shrimp, shellfish, etc in their own households. Her family still pretends to be Conservative. At our own wedding, I had a major fight with my mother in law who flat out REFUSED to allow shrimp to be placed in plain view on large platters with cocktail sauce during the cocktail hour. Instead, the shrimp was "passed" around by waiters in small amounts as hourderves, because this was perceived by her family to be less conspicuous. God forbid the rabbi would see huge plates of shrimp sitting out there on the table, but passing it around like it was some kind of dirty secret was perfectly ok. I'll never figure them out.

Its not in New York. Its a restaurant in Spain. And it has a six month waiting list, at least.
