Interestingly, in English slang "horn" indicates an entirely different (male) body part. So when I first read the "chicks with big horns" comment, I thought you were talking about hermaphrodites. How about "bodacious ta-ta's"?

I ran into the wine shop in Pioneer Square last night. Pretty nice place. Not a huge amount of stock, but they have every price range. The owner was very friendly and nice. They have tastings on most Saturdays at 1:00-4:30. I don't know the name of the store, but it's underground next to the flora/fauna bookstore on 1st. Kathy

The Nickerson Street Saloon has served an excellent burger. I don't know anymore because I haven't had one there in a while, and I noticed that they took the garlic burger off the menu. I do like Red Mill. I don't like most fries, but love onion rings. Too bad Dick's doesn't have 'em. I once stood behind a drunk person at the Dick's window, demanding the order of rings he thought he had paid for. They tried strenuously to explain, "Dude, we don't even *have* onion rings," but the guy wouldn't listen.

LainerX had the prosciutto/fig/goat cheese sandwich there recently as well and said it was delicious. I hope they will have it the day we go!

Ahh. I've been there (now that you note the whole name of the place). Isn't that where you guys took Tony Bourdain when he was here?

Pacific Inn is terrific. Their jukebox kicks butt. Where in the U District is The Pub?

It seems like every Asian restaurant now charges for rice. Good rant, mamster!!

There is a review this week in the Seattle Weekly. http://seattleweekly.com/features/0227/foo...-lightner.shtml Kathy Edit: Oops, sorry Ben. I just realized you already pointed that out (slaps forehead).

Yes, but Rich did not indicate that the fellow he was thinking of, whose name starts with a "P," was deceased. He said Pierre Franey was deceased. Kathy

I think you might mean Paul Prudhomme. Kathy

John Dean sure hopes you'll purchase his new book to find out.

Eh, I see her face almost every day. Luau is one of my favorite places. It's a required spot for me because I am big into collecting vintage tikis and 50s/60s cocktail culture stuff in general. Thanks for mentioning it! The food is very good, the cocktails mixed skillfully, and the service very cordial. They've recently opened an addition; it's called something like the Zanzibar Room. That may not be their name for it, but that's immediately what popped into my mind when I saw it. Kathy

Absolutely. Wonderful idea. I believe it was eGullet member lizziee who noted recently that she does this quite frequently.

Once again, bringing back the sushi thread. Yummm. I had to work at On The Boards all weekend, so I went to Shiki 3 times last week! Of course, Yamamoto commented on that and now recognizes me. On Tuesday, my friend ordered toro, but they didn't have any. The chef explained that since some of the World Cup games had been played in Japan, the toro supply was short and too expensive for him to stock. I found that insight very interesting! On Saturday night, he had bluefin tuna in stock that was divine! He then gave my friend and I some regular maguro AND some toro to compare it to. If he still has some bluefin left, my recommendation is to skedaddle over to Shiki ASAP!

I've often thought of sending a letter (of course, I haven't ever done it, but I might some day ). You can't hang up on a letter! Kathy

Jeff Smith still lives in the Seattle area. I see him frequently at Pike Place Market, and I've seen him at our Asian megamarket Uwajimaya (buying a bunch of kimonos!!). He seems to walk and stand perfectly well, but charges through Pike Place Market in a battery-powered wheelchair, barking at people to get out of the way (it's usually wall-to-wall crowded in there). He's more than a little nuts. The charges against him, BTW, were a lot more serious than a little staff fondling. As for Caprial, I only saw one episode of her second show, and it stunk worse than Emeril. Didn't think it was possible. I believe she owns a restaurant in Portland, OR.

Sounds great! Thanks for the report.

I'd also love to find out. There are zillions of rats-with-wings, er, seagulls in my neck of the woods. It's nice to know that they're good for something. There's a great dairy store at Pike Place Market -- I think I'll ask them.

Bulent's friend has emailed me back. She can say only that he is still being detained and the restaurant is still closed. I told her to let him know that some food-loving folks were wondering how he is doing and wish him well. Kathy

I find the Pink Door to be one of the most pleasant places in the downtown area. As far as food is concerned, I think the antipasti plate is pretty tasty, and big enough to share. I've had an excellent greens/beets/walnut salad there as well. I've never eaten in the restaurant area, because that's not why I go there. So maybe I'm the wrong person to even comment. As far as the magic combination of food quality/atmosphere/service is concerned, my boundaries are very fluid. I could probably have a great time eating at the taco truck if the food was really tasty. I like eating at good barbecue places, but you're usually eating out of a plastic basket lined with paper. Not very glam. My favorite Chinese restaurant has really lousy ambience. I guess I just don't exactly get what you're driving at, what you're trying to get people to say. As they say, YMMV.

There's a website (bistroantalya.com), but there is zero INS news on it. I have just written an email to them asking if there is an update. If I get a response, I'll post it. Kathy

We've eaten at Galerias easily several dozen times. I'm sorry to say, though, that they've gotten really lazy and have managed to let the food slide. And why should they even care? The new location seems to be very popular. In case you didn't see it, here's a Nancy Leson review from 5/02: http://datebook.seattletimes.nwsource.com/...l&venue_code=85 Kathy

A friend attempted to take me to Toyoda last night, but it's closed Mondays. So I steered him to Shiki -- my friend's first time there! He had never eaten amaebi or scallop nigiri. Needless to say, he found it delicious. The chef made some really elaborate dishes for some other folks. In one dish, he took a whole small fish (maybe 6 inches long), cut out the belly meat, and then put the meat back on the fish body to serve it. This was surrounded by some other sashimi and lots of garnish. I also saw him hollow out some tomatoes and fill them with what looked like fish, asparagus, and mayo. Klink, any idea what the heck he was making? Yamamoto mystifies me. I couldn't reconcile my plain nigiri omakase experience with the fanciful dishes I saw him prepare last night. Is he schizo?
