  1. NIce pictures of Brunch at the restaurant at hotel le crillon ,which is known as les ambassadeurs.I was not aware that they have a brunch at 70 euros versus a regular lunch at 85 euros.
  2. ITs interesting to note that 220F equalled 33.5 euros in 2000.So prices have doubled in 8 years .So the inflation rate in resaturants is over 15% per annum.
  3. IN most Paris restaurants I ask for chateau de seine(tap water) In a carafe. NO problem what so ever. Its usually chilled. Incidentally I Have conducted blind water tasting .Its very hard to discern any difference in non carbonated water by most people.
  4. Petirenaud is definetly a good source for not only restaurants(bonnes tables) but also for patisserie ,fromagerie ,etc. Many of his recommendations are discussed on egullet ,others are not.For instance for the 7th arrondissement he mentions Gaya rive gauche,la fontaine de Mars ,which is talked about here ,but also la brunie or tante marguerite, which are not mentionned on this site.
  5. Of course its a personal opinion like everything else ,specially when it comes to food and wine .IT will be interesting to come up with a list of restaurants that are ranked based on rapport qualite /prix.Do you have some suggestions.? Here is a short list -L'epigramme -L'os a moelle -L'afaria -Le bistral -Les papilles -Temps au temps -Les clos des gourmets -Etc ,etc
  6. A few weeks ago i had dinner at this restaurant recommende by J talbot..ITs very small about 30 tables, almost a hole in the wall. When you enter you are greeted by a charming hostess/waitress and asked whether your table is OK and then given a menu ,where for 29 euros one has 4 to 5 choices from an entree ,main and dessert.ITs tradional cuisine cooked by a japanese chef. You also have a very reasonable wine list by the pichet from small proprioters. I ordered a foie gras ,followed by kidneys with mustard sauce and a tarte tatin. THe cuisine was tradional and yet it was different .I guess it was lighter.IT was deliceous .The wine ,a medoc, rich and velvety went beautifully with the meal. I could not beleive that I was eating like this for 29 euros ,around the corner from la place de l'etoile.ITs no question that this is the best bargain in Paris.
  7. With great anticipation John Talbot and I had lunch last week at agape. WE had the parsley root soup.the st pierre with oyster foam ,Desnoyer lamb and for dessert, the cheese plate and the carrot soup/orange sorbet. The above selection was the 39 E luncheon. At some point I asked John so what's the fuss all about.? Its a pleasant place with food that is forgotten the minute its eaten.I mean its not bad ,but its just neutral .ITs fine if this is a spa and one wants to feel that they have not eaten.Actually I was hungry a few hrs later .Even the wine a coteaux de roussillion, recommended by the maitre D ,did not have much character. I have to say that there were quite a few resonably priced decent wines on the list contrary to our preconception. This restaurant is a good example as to how beauty is in the eyes of the beholder
  8. I should clarify that by unaffordable i meant that people would have to cut on something else in order to pay for the event or that they don't have too much discretional income. Therefore I agree with you that if going to a 3 star restaurant for a special event is important than some people will economize in order to go.As you know that's the case with some french families
  9. I agree with the comment made by many that ones favorite in any restaurant is subjective,Therefore the views expreseed by an individual has merit if you share their values. What's interesting is that cost of a meal was not brought up. The average cost today is at least $300/person. For 99% of the people its unaffordable. So for the 1% its an opportunity to have a unique experience .Its pure theatre, created by the entrance ceremony, sumptious surroundings, the beautiful participants, the attentive service and 1st class food ,based on good ingredients served on fancy china and important visual content.THe cuisine definitely plays a role but what is important is the averall experience. So one does not go to a 3 star restaurant to simply eat but to have an experince that is different .

    Cannes

I agree.A simple fisherman's dish that costs an arm and a leg.It was quite reasonable many years ago ,but when demand increased ,prices soared. Excellent ingredients and wonderful beach location.I found the bouillabaisse tastier at Tetou than at bacon, except ,perhaps in Marseille ,where its also quite reasonable. So when is the day? PLease give us your take of the place

    Cannes

Bacon is closed Monday and Tuesday for lunch. Tétou on Wednesday. They are open for lunch the rest of the week. You need to call to reserve; if there is a congress or festival in Cannes, as there frequently is, they can be booked up. You don't need to tell Tétou you will have bouillabaisse; that is all they serve. I imagine that Bacon always has the ingredients fresh and on hand. ← Several people have cautioned that bouillabaisse for two is "quite expensive," and that they don't take credit cards. Can anyone tell me how much is "quite expensive"? How much should we expect to pay? ← Tetou is closed all day wed and lunch monday. Bouillabaisse costs 90 to 115 euros per person(cash).Langoustine accounts for the difference.Desserts and wine is extra.Incidentally, You'll find many cars with swiss plates. The ingredients are 1st rate.I find the bouillabaisse is better at tetou than at Bacon. Its an experience worth a visit if you like seafood.
  12. Well I'm an ex-fan and I liked it shortly after it opened and said I'd go back but have only been back once. ← I have eaten at Gaya a few times and Liked it.It's been awhile however. Stick to seafood dishes and the ones with gagnaire inprint.THey are not wildly inventive, thus easily likable.
  13. I have eaten a few times.. Last time with JT.You have better choices in Paris. ← For one of Pierre and my experiences - see here.As for suggestions (these are all lunch, as was Ze, where it's not noisy and American) try Passiflore, Clocher Pereire, l'Epigramme, Afaria, Repaire de Cartouche, Les Papilles depending on what you want. ← Wondeful choices. They are not alike and represent what eating out in Paris is all about.I wish someone will give me a list like this when I travel .
  14. I have eaten a few times.. Last time with JT.You have better choices in Paris.
  15. You seem to echo my reaction when i ate at ZE Kitchen a few years ago.Namely that it could have been in NY .However I was going to try it again as I respect JT"s opinion and I was hoping that perhaps there is less of that international feeling.

YOu have one of the best and most expensive bouillabaisse, around the corner in golfe-juan at Tetou. You're right at the beach(ask for a window table).Excellent ingredients and ambiance.D'ont forget to drink local wines such as Domaine d'ott . Remember you're no longer in vietnam where the cruise ship went and the insights you had .Bon appetit
  17. Every thing in life is subjective, specially when it comes to food and wine. I have enjoyed wine pairings at Senderens ,l'astrance and Il vino. The cuisine is definitely better at Senderens and L'astrance, and taken individually the wines were also better, however what i found special at Il vino was the pairing . The wines truly enhanced The food,Each one in its own category ,whether food or wine was not exceptional, but a focus on wine and dishes that complement, was unique and rewarding.
  18. The best place for wine pairing today in paris is EL VINO in the 7th. It received 1 star recently .I reviewed it when it opened so you may read about it.THe pairing is as good as Senderens and better than L'astrance.
  19. ITs been years since i have been to Passiflore.I am glad to note that he kept the same style of interesting modern cooking .Did you meet The chef?.He is very friendly. I'll be back
  20. PLease note that 2 of your recommendations ,Ze kitchen and les fables have received 1 star since then.Pas mal.

    Apicius

We had dinner in early june 2005 at Apicius at its new location ,a block from champs elysees. The restaurant is set in an 18th century mansion fronted by a garden , right in the middle of urban Paris. Our table was in the middle room, the best out of the 2 others.French windows(floor to ceiling),marble chimney with white orchards and a modern chandelier gave a clean/minimalistic ,yet luxurious ambiance. There were about 8 tables. We were lucky for beeing seated in this room,as mr vigato(the chef) was busy beeing charming to 2 of the tables of people he knew.WE did not order any apperitf,so we asked for the menu and made our selection and requested the wine list ,which arrived together with the sommeliere. So we had our amuse bouche with no wine. The AB was a heavenly lobster bisque, quite generous. There were no 1/2 bottles on the wine list,as i prefer to drink 1/2 with the amuse and as an apperitif. After about 20 minutes we had our wine which was a minervois, white grenache.Refreshing with nice acidity and fruit but a bit oaky. Our entree was foie gras de canard et d'oie in 2 servings ,cold and hot.The cold serving was Very high quality pieces of duck foie sprinkled with sea salt and aged balsamic vinaigre followed by another serving of warm foie in 2 forms ,one was covered with a ginger/quince marmelade & the 2nd was in a mousse of foie d'oie in a cup.The experience was rich and to die for.The main was rotie de turbot.presented on a small table ,prepared and served by a team of 2.We each received a generous piece of fresh turbot.cooked just right and surrounded by tube shaped potatoe fritters. The sauce was meat based and odd enough it enhanced the fish flavor. However it was quite rich and delicious. To be honnest it was too heavy a dish, specially after the foie gras. The maitre D had assured me that wiil not be the case when i had inquired while ordering. For dessert my partner had " tout chocolat" and i had "tout caramel".Each came with 7 different versions of the dessert.Delicious.Followed by mignardises or after dessert. So as usual in a 2 star restaurant one has an oceam of sweets.Total bill was 250 euros for 2, including wine .For that price you can't beat the setting and the food ,service however was not 2 star .Its classic cuisine with high qualty ingredients and as such good for its type and enjoyable.
  22. . Eh bien ,cher ami Tu peux consulter le www.guidegantie.com/fr. Bonne chance
  23. I had never been to guatemala .Its always been its neighbor to the north ,Mexico ,where i have been at least 30 times. Guatemala is a very interesting country ,with its mountains, lakes and mayan history. Also its very reasonable.Dinner in their best restaurant is $15-25/person, depending on the chosen wine. The country is mexico of 30 years ago..NO malls, major freeways ,etc so it's untouched ,fortunately. Overall the food is OK,but nothing special. The best is local cuisine ,rather than an attempt for sophistication. In guatemala city i went to Jakes ,presumably the best restaurant .IT was a mixture of american, italian and contemporary. i ordered blackened fish and ceasar's salad.THey were OK ,not bad. However i enjoyed more Hacienda Real with its open air seating and succulent local steak, tender and juicy and cooked right.SErvice in both places was excellent . IN Antigua one of their best restaurant is Welten, which provided international tradional cuisine.Again OK and in very nice surroundings. My favorite was la fonda de la caille real, where i ate 3 times since they offer local specialties consisting of meat cooked in chillie and coriander, served with rice and frijoles as well as tortillas.Simple but tasty .I ususally drank Moza a german type local dark beer.
  24. I also loved my dining experience at Sensing .I admit I was seated in the rear and treated well perhaps because i was alone and showed interest.Who knows.
