  1. Unreal! No one has mentioned "Ice Water"!!!!!! Or "ahyce watah", rather. I can't have a glass of water without loading it up with ice and almost feel a bit of disgust when I see other people drinking warm water fom a Brita. UGH! In Memphis, you can drink from the tap as the water coems from Artesian wells...yum.
  2. I grew up in Memphis and lived a lot of my adult life there too and BBQ is one thing to me: A messy wet pulled pork sandwich with pickled slaw and spicy red sauce smothering it...on a white bread, soft round bun! I know there are famous ribs there, but I am not a rib girl. It amazed me when I moved out to the West Coast how WRONG they get it. The sauces are just plain bad and no one makes any inventive cole slaws. It is odd b/c there are a lot (relative term) of African-Americans who have family in the South living here and a lot of Southerners period have transplanted here. Still, no one can make a pulled pork sandwich that I have found edible. So yeah, I think everyone can appreciate BBQ, but no one but Southerners have the special bond with it that goes beyond comfort food. Transplanted Southerners always feel a little odd in other elements and I think the constant search for true BBQ and good Southern cooking is akin to finding the comfort we can only feel at home. I am sure New Yorkers feel this way about pizza and egg creams and Pennsylvanians about their "Dutch" food!
  3. Thanks! They all sound perfect---fresh and canned! I like the idea of the sour cream & Jiffy b/c that sounds like what the caterer did. Any other good Southern recipes out there? I miss home! I have a great baked cheese grits casserole and also a good biscuits recipe...any dinner recipes????
  4. When I was home in Memphis, we went to a catered rehersal dinner with a bunch of typically Southern dishes. One was this incredible corn casserole. It was sweet tasting and I believe had bread crumbs on top. Does anyone have a good recipe for this as I am craving it!!!!!
  5. First, what is LOW? As far as BBQ, I don't bother eating it in PDX anymore. I am from Memphis, so I am spoiled and I like it a certain way and if it isn't Memphis-style, I don't like it. I want smoky, cooked all day and night, spicy/sweet sauce with pickled cole slaw PORK. Oh yeah, it would be nice to get this with a side that cost under $8. That is one thing I can't get about PDX--the overpriced "Soul Food". Everytime I would go to Doris' or Soup n Suds, I would come out blowing a $10 bill on mediocre food...not a good feeling in the soul. But, as I am not in Memphis but once a year and I do crave the Southern cooking, usually I cook myself or hope someone fires up a grill and wants to do a potluck BBQ. I have to say I have enjoyed fried chicken from Doris and Soup n Suds and even the Delta. Yam Yams is awful everytime I have been. Can anyone reccomend a truly Southern-style place to rock this jaded Memphis gurl off her high horse???
  6. Was back home (memphis) a week ago and took my fiance to Payne's on Lamar...he said he could have easily eaten 2 pork sandwiches, they were that good!!!!! We got extra spicy too and the taste and spice of the sauce was in my mouth for a good 2 hrs! anyone know recipes for that sweet cole slaw they use at Payne's? it is like pickled cole slaw.
  7. i will have to disagree with Andrew's site being comprehensive---there are a few "joints" mentioned that he has never even tried! he also does not qualify Flying Pie in his definition of a "joint" which, according to the very definition mentioned, it is. It isn't the best pizza (more & more this is seeming like a big matter of individual taste), but it is better than Pizza Schmizza which is the Coffee People of Pizza in Portland. The "attitude" is more of a faux NY attitude--or maybe it is just typical blase surliness that comes from being 25, working at a pizza joint and making $8 an hour plus a split tip jar. Bella Faccia has good slices on occasion (when fresh)...my fave pizza joint is this place in Asheville,NC that has strict Neopolitan style--fresh bright red sauce, globs of fresh mozzarella and great flavorful thin crust! Gotta find the name---some Italian men's name.
  8. it is OK, the only really New York thing about it is the "attitude" they give off and the fact that it is thin crust. the best pizza i have had here has been Flying Pie and also Pizza a go go...but neither is the best pizza i have ever had! any other suggestions are appreciated.
  9. Sounds horrible and I am not intending to be snarky, but did anyone get up, look around and ask where the service was and if they were indeed serving or was the caffe entirely empty and wide open? Maybe I am pushy, but I would have been wandering about!
  10. Just using my memphis slang, Tom! To a native Midtown (and South and North et al) Memphian of a certain age, saying "joint" means "small, homey diner/restaurant/place to buy some eats." Where oh where did you get a delicious benedict in Memphis? I have had plenty of greasy meals growing up and going to college there, but never once an eggs benedict that wasn't made at home. I am looking forward to real BBQ pulled pork sandwiches (they aren't overrated!), good grits, good fried chicken and a Quik Chek on Madison deli sandwich...any other relatively cheap eats (inc. breakfasts) I need to know about?
  11. could be...we haven't gone there in about a month and it was still Krua Thai then. It is right up the street from the Detour Cafe and Nature's...
  12. Hollis, as you now know, the Krua Thai is now named (drum roll) "Appethaizing"
  13. The tacqueria at the corner of 42nd and NE Killingsworth...it always has a different name posted but used to be El Taco #2, had great salsas, taco salads, fish tacos and reportedly, burritos (I don't eat those)...I have not been in a few months, but everytime I go, it is packed. Agreed re: La Bonita vs. La Sirenita. Fish tacos at Sirenita were AWFUL and they don't even do tamales.
  14. I have missed Shakey's for YEARS so anyone that goes, report back!!! Being from Memphis and living on PDX for the last 4 years, I miss the following: (1) a good pulled-pork BBQ sandwich with cole slaw on an outrageously huge bun. (2) grits that are creamy with a dash of butter...not these dried-up baked monstrosities they serve here...baked grits are great, but no one has gotten em right here. (3) A place that really does Southern cooking right, you know, as advertised. Unfortunately, even the soul food spots aren't that great. Well, with the exception of the Soup n Suds on Mississippi, which ruled. But I heard they sold it to The Man. Wah. No more banana pudding with Nilla wafers, cornbread catfish and greens.
  15. I am going home to Memphis and bringing the fiance--any good breakfast joints anymore? Used to go to the old Buntyn's and also the Arcade...I really want something good, no junk!
