  1. Where is the best Middle Eastern market in PDX???? Ya Hala?
  2. ah-ha! Does pomegranate mollasses have bits of pomegranate in it? I seriously doubt they are using fresh pomegranate...it has a darkened color to it.
  3. I am addicted to the Pomegranate Vinaigrette at Detour. I gotta make it myself...where do I buy pomegranate juice? I am not about to deal with fresh pomegranate unless I have to...seems incredibly time-consuming.
  4. I am addicted to a local restaurant's Pomegranate Vinaigrette and now must have some on hand for myself. BUT where oh where do I buy pomegranate juice??? I live in Portland OR and we have some good groceries but I have no idea of where to start...
  5. Go to Tomato Head on the Mall Downtown--good brunch as well as dinner pizza, sandwiches and salads. I really think Knoxville may be lacking in the "fine dining" experience area--I lived there for years in the 90's and when I was there last October, not much had changed.
  6. When is "mushroom time" exactly? And is this place worth bringing the parents to? It is beginning to sound like I need to convince them they want to go somewhere else...
  7. It was delicious! The bread-soaked-in-sauce was a neccessity too. And we made a great caesar salad suggested on another thread...GREAT DINNER, Hollis! Thanks everyone for the tips, keep em coming!
  8. I think the main goodness of this dish is that it is sweet and starchy, not salty with the pork taste.
  9. That does sound good--since we will be using our oven--anyone have an easy, good grilled fish recipe? We are in the Pacific NW. Then again, we could blacken some catfish...
  10. Hollis--please follow the side ideas of Busboy...since I will be whom you are cooking for!
  11. I am finally going to make this tonight and was wondering what I should serve with it...it is a good dish but a taste you need something else with. THANKS!
  12. WHERE can I find this sort of site for Multnomah County (PDX), Oregon??????
  13. Glad to see this has turned into such a big discussion. SInce I last wrote, I sent off dor the Saveur sub and then realized I had already agreed to a so-called free "trial" to CI which was really just a fish for a sub from the Americastestkitchen.com site...very sneaky. No free issue, just an assumption you will subscribe after they send you and issue with a bill. I am still getting it though cos the boy likes the tech-y nature of CI. Very Consumer Reports but there are some good recipes. I have to say their salsa recipe is NOT "the best salsa" the way the writer pimps it as...it is more like a "good Pico." But oh well! And to answer again to those who keep inquiring, BOTH mags about food and how to cook. THANKS.
  14. It is 21 miles from my house in near NE Portland. Still, worth it!!!! It would be a great drive but you have to drive down 26 for awhile and then through Beaverton which is pretty crowded suburbia. The last few miles of the trip are nice, wine country, berry picking roads, however!
  15. We got there right at 4PM for re-opening tonight and there were 4 other tables waiting outside in 98 degree heat. Yes. It is THAT good. We got the Classic Margherita with Italian Sausage...perfect fresh red sauce, delicious parmesan, sausage was fantastic and the crust was simply perfect. I am typically a two-slice girl and easily wolfed down three along with half a terrific Cesar (sic) Salad. YUM!
  16. I meant "Thee" as in the Kingly "the" best... Hmmmm...looks like I may wanna puruse the newstand before I go beyond Saveur. I like the recipes in Saveur as well as its focus on travel and food history. I don't think purely tech mags are very interesting but since Hollis is whom I am trying to get the sub for, maybe I should ask him! I will read Saveur myself...he's probably like a tech-y type mag come to think of it!
  17. Thanks! I will definitely be checking some out, esp. Cook's Illustrated as that seems to have the general consensus vote! I am getting a sub to Saveur cos it is like the National Geographic of food.
  18. We like to cook real food, nothing gourmet and extreme...I like Saveur but are there others I should also consider?
  19. hollis would agree with you MSG, but they had one delicious dish not on the menu--something like hot & spicy tofu with asparagus...and even though you in particular are a total restaurant snob, it was undeniably delish to many who tried it!!!!!
  20. Hollis and i live in this neighborhood and always make fun of the name "noodlehead", but looks like we will check them out. Saigon Kitchen is now Chino Saigon and though they claim it is the same kitchen & wait staff, I doubt it. They were TERRIBLE the only 2 times I went after the change in ownership and inflexible (before you could make up stuff to order not on the menu, etc)...
  21. Yes, let us know. My dad is coming out from Florida with his "lady friend" and is interested in checking it out. Is there another restaurant/s that people can reccomend to take a 50-something great cook and his woman for a nice dinner with the kids? They have never been to this area (PDX).
  22. I'll be by the stand at 6th & Hawthorne soon! BBQ cookoffs give me bad memories of Memphis (when the whole Downtown smells so much like smoke and you can't get the smell off your clothes & hair for a whole day!!!)...
  23. I definitely said that everyone can appreciate BBQ, but as a Southerner it is just a little bit different than being a "favorite food", it is a reminder of home. No slights on NYC, half my family is from there! I am willing to give BBQ a shot anywhere I go and I have, but even in cities like Chicago, Oakland and NYC where there are many Southern transplants cooking good food, the BBQ is DEFINITELY not the same. Sometimes it is pretty good, but nothing has ever reached the heights of a Payne's pulled pork sandwich or a BBQ cornish hen from Cozy Corner. Try as they might!
  24. I hear you, but Memphis adds a hefty sales tax and still, stuff is CHEAP. Even at the popular joints like Ellen's, a meat and 3 sides (hefty servings too) with tea is no more than $7. Maybe food in general is cheaper there than here, but still. Hollis had a good point when he said, "If it was good food, you wouldn't care if you paid the $10...its just that it is a mediocre attempt so it doesn't feel worth it." Anyway, one place I haven't tried is The Tropicana on Williams--it is all fixed up now, anyone been?
