  1. Go back to Zaytinya for some of Steve Klc's creations -- unusual and fabulous. When you leave to go to the game ask them if you return, would it be possible to get a table to have dessert. Otherwise other possibilities: Jaleo, Zola...
  2. Yes, I would find it demeaning to be described merely as "a poster on a certain message board" (had I been one of the recipients of the comped hot chocolate), when we are now a society devoted to upholding the culinary virtues, and therefore worthy of whatever that gets us wherever.
  3. Congratulations to you and your Mrs. It's great to see the future of eGullet emerging from the mists of time. BTW -- Morphine ain't all it's cracked up to be (no pun intended). Deadens the pallette and the appetite.
  4. I went for a post-prandial walk and stopped in for a spot o' wine at Kinkeads yesterday and also perused the RW menu (lunch only). Today I went for lunch. The menu features three apps: Lobster/something bisque, salad, ravioli. Three main events: Cod cakes, parmesan crusted swordfish, crusted salmon (don't know with what). Two desserts: chocolate souffle w/vanila ice cream and raspberry cheesecake. I had the bisque, swordfish, and souffle + 1/2 glass Mosel, 1 glass Muscadet, and then more Mosel. And as Pepys would say now to bed.... ZZZZZZ Edited to rewrite on the basis of actually dining
  5. Dining with friends at Mendocino on Friday night. First time for them.
  6. How will I know you I'll try to hang around til you get there, but I may have to make an early retreat in order to see my daughter's dance team perform at the Basketball game tonight at FCHS. Go Jags!
  7. It really is quite a space...although in some areas (stairway, other highly trafficked areas), it was looking a little threadbare. I stopped in there for a drink, maybe a snack, and although I was impressed with the surroundings, I felt somehow uncomfortable. Could be that it was 80% empty (it was a Tuesday). Could be that I didn't like the singer's voice. What do you all think? Is it worth trying again, perhaps on a Thursday or some other night when Ortanique might be livelier? What dishes are recommended? ← Jenny: somewhere in this subforum I think I saw a comment that Ortanique was a place to go for drinks, but not necessarily to eat. I've done plenty of drinking there -- it's been fairly hopping by about 7 pm (can't remember what day(s) of the week) at the upstairs bar. Never sampled the food though.
  8. DG Happy Hour Menu: Not bad at all! ← OK, DG it is! Note that Three Little Pigs not on Happy Hour menu. Must be an entree. Dig the $4.75/glass Perlat!
  9. I could be -- Any chance of venturing into Arlington for Talulla? Or should we do Corduroy or Firefly, or someplace else?? How 'bout Mendocino in G'town and perhaps crossing over to Sea Catch for their Happy Hour oysters? Hmmmm...
  10. I am reminded of Michel Richard's comment on his own weight in the recent Gourmet article, "I am too busy to think about what not to eat."
  11. While I will happily defer to all those singing the praises of Hoagies and other subs in places like Philadelphia and elsewhere -- in the interest of practicallity -- I will add a vote for Mangilardos G-man on the hard roll (bread baked by Ottenberg's Bakery).
  12. More like the bumper car ride at the amusement park with a lot of out of state vehicles
  13. ← Yeah, I always figured Larry was getting comped for the free advertizing -- not that Duke needed it. Crabcakes anybody? Edited to add that I went to school with Bob Thiele's son -- didn't realize that was his Dad's work. Bob Sr. was a noted Jazz producer.
  14. Duke Zeibert's? Edited to add that I realize Duke's has been defunct for a long time, but I mention it in this thread to see if anyone has any reminisces of interest -- remember Larry King always ended up there after his radio talk show ended in the 70s.
  15. Joe: What about "upscale" dining establishments in DC circa 1960-1970? (There weren't that many -- the Senate Dining room was one.) I remember my Dad taking me to Harvey's on one of my early visits to the city, where I consumed my first whole lobster when I was about 5. My old man bragged on that for a long time afterwards.
  16. Here's another idea: Mendocino Grille. On Sunday's they feature a half-priced wine list which has some nice selections, e.g. a Turley Rattlesnake Ridge Zin.
  17. D'artagnan Geese Agree that D'Artagnan may be your best bet. My Thanksgiving Turkey was a D'Artagnan bird and it was excellent: Geese You might also try Balducci's (formerly Sutton Place), but they probably are priced like Dean and Deluca
  18. Let's hear it for the Bourbon Club! ← Yes, this is what I aspire to: A brass plate with my name on it prominently displayed in a popular public place so that the whole world knows what a lush I am!
  19. Excellent choice. I may start out at Mendocino for some vino, but then head up the street for some good bourbon. In which case I'll see you there.
  20. Okay so I'm starting early, but WTH, Friday before Christmas, totally dead in the office and I don't know how long I'll stick around. Anyone got any happy hour plans -- Firefly? Tallula? Corduroy? Somewhere else?
  21. mdt is correct the Clarendon stop is slightly closer than Court House (I've done both). Edited to add: Unfortunately the street maps you can look at by clicking on the link to Metro (in mdt's post) and then going to a specific station and then clicking on the bottom link to the "station masters street maps" do not provide the intersection where Tallula is located -- Pershing and Washington Blvd.
  22. Here's a thread on the same subject: Dining out on Christmas edited to add: Corduroy is featuring a fixed price three course, but for this and other options, prompt action to acquire reservations is needed
  23. Schneiders on Mass Ave NE, near Union Station, although better known for its wine, has a decent selection of whiskey
  24. Colvin Run is where I had my last Birthday Dinner and where I would hope to have my next
