  1. Words of wisdom. I too am a big fan of Montmartre, particularly the Hanger Steak -- have only had the lunch version though. The last time I was there just before Thanksgiving the soup was a saffron cauliflower with mussels -- delicious! Have to go back soon to try the Chestnut soup. Aren't turnips a mainstay of French bistro? Edited to apologize for being redundant concerning my fanhood.
  2. Anyone planning to be at Ray's tonight? I have res's for 8:30.
  3. Excellent -- so long as the quality has not dropped off! ← I arrived today shortly after noon and there was no line. Chef Donna attributed it to 1) the season/weather and 2) the fact that customers now are spacing themselves to avoid the crush just at noon. There was a modest number of folks in the back room munching down the sandwiches - and yes, the quality remains the same. I'm saving my canoli for later in the afternoon snacking.

  5. Anyone going to the grill for lunch today?
  6. Weekly Dish Weekly Dish features a blurb on Tallula by Sietsma
  7. I had forgotten all about Colvin Run Tavern. ← If you decide on this one make a reservation immediately -- they are frequently solidly booked days in advance and particularly on wkends.
  8. If you want to invest in the relationship -- Colvin Run Tavern on Rt. 7 at Tysons
  9. Mark: During the first year of its existence, Nouveau East had an excellent Sushi chef. He left to help his family with the Tokyo Japanese Steak House, so I have to assume they feature Sushi, and I'd be willing to vouch that if Jeff, the chef from NE, is still there it would be pretty darned good.
  10. After much urging I finally went for dinner at Mendocino last night with my daughter. Taking advantage of the 1/2 priced wines, I had a Turley "Rattlesnake Ridge" Zin -- WoW! My little girl, who's favorite refrain at home is "Oh dad, why do you have to cook so gourmet!" tucked into quail served on a bed of cabbage after she sucked down a bowl of the Parsnip soup. I had the braised short rib w/ribeye. Very succulent and accompanied the wine (really the main event) nicely. Melissa and another server who's name I didn't get provided excellent service, as usual. G'town was buzzing for an early Sunday evening -- must be the Christmas shopping season. Mendocino is a nice port for those who need a respite from the frenzy in the shops.
  11. Yes it was mystifying why they had the unused seating area unless they were short of servers. I am keeping an open mind and attributing the glitch (if it was a glitch) to opening week shakedown issues. It was too bad that it was so crowded at the bar when we were in there -- I quess it was around 8ish (the whole evening is a blur now ) -- that we didn't feel like fighting for some of the apps. I will definitely have another go at it in the near future.
  12. How 'bout 5 pm or as soon as I can get there if I walk from Foggy Bottom at about quarter of. See you all there!
  13. Cool -- almost across the street from Harry's, and I need to place anorder for a case of wine anyway. So now I know where Happy Hour, part deux will transpire.
  14. Anyone up for starting Happy Hour at Firefly today?
  15. For most people that's not a good trend. ← Remember it's not necessarily the meat...
  16. Are the chorizo corn dogs at Tallula mini? Put these two together and perhaps the new trend is the mini-weiner. The DG version being the analog to Nadya's deconstructed vision. ← Not exactly mini, although with the batter around them it was hard to tell the size of the sausage (I din't eat any due to overindulgence in carbs during Thanksgiving).
  17. That's one that I might actually be able to pull off. ← NB: Tallula opens its doors at 5:30 pm
  18. RELAX It's Virginia where you're allowed to take out what you can't finish. Just ask for the brown bag and you'll fit in on the late night Metro ride home.
  19. One theory about the reason for Whitey's demise was that neighborhood residents strongly objected to renewal of its liquor license due to the inconvenience of Whitey's customers throwing trash in yards, puking on the sidewalks, brawling, etc. Don't think that Blackie's has that kind of problem.
  20. I'm thinking that's where I'll begin my weekend roll. Perhaps making my way to Oyamel (haven't been there yet) with stops along the way at Tallula and/or Harry's -- nothing too ambitious, just a slooow gentle descent.....
  21. Don't be fooled by the lingering Whitey's exterior. They have indeed "scraped the burger muck off the walls." The space is very nouveau chic -- meaning steel bar, muted but well stated earthtones, dark lighting, good sound system, and comfortably and well laid out. They have both a non-smoking bar space and a smoker's lounge in the back which will eventually feature a humidor. OK now for the really good news -- the wines by the glass. They have more than sixty, wide variety and price range ($6-20+). Not as ecclectic as Jarrad's at Nectar, but a good selection nonetheless. They do serve as noted in the Reidel O stemless stemware -- something some may frown upon smudging the clarity of the wine inside and heating it up if you hold the glass too long, but for me less likely to spill. The appetizer list (build your own hors d'oeuvre platter) is interesting -- yay for oyster shooters served in tomato water. What a great idea to have chorizo corn dogs. The entree menu which you can see on their website appears to offer some interesting plates -- the proof will be in the pudding. Didn't see the Dessert menu, speaking of pudding. Service at the bar was very amicable. Charlie and Jessie are enthusiastic about the opportunity to assist in getting this operation off the ground. I assured them that there are many of us who wish this enterprise to succeed. The management needs to attend immediately to getting their own signage out on the street. At dusk the place is practically invisible, and the old Whitey's sign is still up on the front of the store. BTW it is being auctioned off on E-Bay by Arlington County for anyone with Whitey's nostalgic interest. You will have to remove it yourself, however, if you make the winning bid. Edited to add: Perhaps the same will be done with the Broaster, Rocks.
  22. This news about the long awaited opening in the space formerly known as Whitey's is terrific -- an alternative to Harry's -- nothing wrong with the Tap room for Happy Hour, but variety is the spice of life and it looks like Tallula has lots of variety. I plan to check it out this afternoon. Oyster shooters -- uuuummmm!
  23. That would be helpful, Little Wing, if it's not too much trouble. BTW, last time I went for the Grill, Chef Donna mentioned that he planned on opening a back room so that those who would normally eat on the premises out back would have some place more hospitable for Winter conditions. Anyone know if that has happened?
  24. No need to stop the discussion here, but I'm taking my wife and child to Corduroy, if Fero can help me out with a reservation. Many thanks for the other suggestions, but if I wanted to do the Chinese thing, I'd just have the little wife whip up some noodles, or go to Mark's Duck House.
