  1. Scout. I'd second Ganache too. Taste stuff, friendly owner and good pricing too.
  2. This is the draw for me. Ketupat (rice cakes) is not very easily found in this city. Glad someone is making it! Thanks for the review. We'll be going this weekend to check it out! ← No sweat. Be curious to find out what you ordered and what you liked.
  3. For casual Malaysian? I must have up-sold the restaurant a little too much... FYI, it is no French Laundry.
  4. At Capones, we will be extending the dine out menu through Feb. 8th. As of Feb. 9, we will be offering a Valentine's menu that will run through Feb. 18. Ian ← Our one and only DOV visit was to RARE (2 kids & another on the way...). Service was attentive but understated (just how we likeit) . We had our 1 year old with us and left our 3 year old with a baby sitter. (she was screaming as we were going out the door so we had to bring her...) Had the deep fried oysters (yummy), veal cheeks and pudding(delicious). Wife had the cauliflower soup (flavourful), striploin & chocolate (another hit). Ordered the mushroom ravioli after reading the rave reviews here (great flavour for the mushrooms compote, but the ravioli was a tad dry for my taste. still yummy, though). Dinner came up to $150 per couple (there were four of us, excluding our toddler) with drinks , taxes and tips. All in all it was a good experience. Will definitely recommend and revisit when the folks come back into town and offer to baby sit.
  5. The aptly named Italian Market one block west of Donald's Market, south side of East Hastings. Very clean, well-kept store, good turnover of goods and just about the nicest people you could imagine. On Saturdays, there's usually three generations (family-owned business) working behind the counter. ← Love that store. Lena & Claudio are the owners. Grandma, that's what my son calls her, is a fixture there. And yes you are right, you might see both sons helping there on weekends (Stefano & don't know the name of the other). Super friendly people, with outstanding QPR for their meats. Love their sausages. Just wished that they could make the store bigger and stock more items.
  6. Banana Leaf is to my taste a very solid provider of Malaysian cuisine. My only beef with them is that it is sort of downtown and that they once overcharged me for their "chilli crab" special (ie. got charged 2.5lb for what was obviously a 1.5lb crab...). As well, it is a weeee-bit "westerned" for my tastes. Have tried Kedah House 3-4 times since they have moved to their new location. The 1st couple of times was pretty good (when they still had their buffet lunch & dinners), followed by a takeout order that was horrendous (satays tasted like they were from the night before) and an okay visit on our last visit. It is too much of a hit and miss situation, especially for us North Shorers... So for 2 for 2, the food at Seri has been outstanding. Wife remarked that the peanut satay sauce is the best in Vancouver (although she said that the rice cakes were a little soft for her tastes... but what does she know.... )
  7. Second, Shiro if Tojo is not available. Not in the same class, but very good QPR and also way better for the pocket. Second, Kintaro for cheap ramen. Second Diva @ the Met for dessert. Lumiere is way over rated, IMHO. (Feenie for brunch is okay.) Better bet is West or C. Parkside is another one that I'd propose. Sun Sui Wah for dimsum or chinese dinner. Pear Tree is doing interesting stuff.
  8. No probs. We shop at Donalds Market across the street. What other recommendation do you need? Just picked up some roti, mee reebus (yes, I know....I am predictable) and some chicken satay for dinner. The kids are munching on them as I type. They were out of the beef. Darn these are tasty. Still nice and moist after the 1/2 hour car ride home. The rice cake are fresh and the peanut sauce pretty much bang on. Darn. I feel like a walking advert board....
  9. Hey. No sweat. Like I said, it is a little self-serving. The more people that know the more business they get. The more business they get the higher chance of them staying float in the long run. Orchid Delight is a couple of blocks away from my studio. Do stop in time to time for some Char Kuey Teow. Agree on the oyster omlette although I haven;t had one in a long time. Cholesterol and all, you know...
  10. So after about 3 months waiting and anticipating, I finally noticed the "open for business" sign at Seri Malaysia restaurant. Walked into a clean and no-frills dinning area that had another table of 4 occupied. This was at about 2 in the afternoon. Took a look at the menu, which had a ton of dishes (been told will probably be pared down over time according to popularity of the dishes). Was in the mood for Roti (a dish that I use for gauging the quality & authenticity at every Malaysian restaurant I visit) and also order the Mee Reebus. Service was warm/inviting and efficent/quick (a good sign). The roti arrived and serving size was slightly larger than other places in town (eg. Tropica). The key was the curry that goes with the dish. Spot on for flavours without excess oil or being watered down (unlike someother places in town). This was followed by a steaming hot bowl of Mee Reebus, which is a egg noodle dish with a sweet potato/yam gravy. Delicious! Not made in the Malay/Penang style, but more in the Singapore style where the gravy is nice and thick. Again another generous serving. All in all based on these 2 dishes, IMHO my most authentic Malaysian meal in 15 years in Vancouver. (other that when mom comes back into town... ) So, I chatted up with the owner, Jamel. Found out that he was one of the co-owners of the original Kedah House on Fraser Street. Seemed like a friendly and laid back kind of fellow. On a selfish note, thought that I might want to spread the good word around even though I don't usually post. Anything to support a new and much needed entry for Asian cuisine in the East Van/North Burnaby area. Hope that word gets around and they get busy enough to make this one work. For my sake anyways.... Anyways here is the info. Seri Malaysia Restaurant 2327 East Hasting Street (right across from the Churchs Fried Chicken) Tel: 604-677-7555 Hours are everyday 12noon to 8pm. You might want to call ahead in the evenings.
  11. Thanks! ← If anyone is interested, this is a great all round thread to bookmark for dinning in the Portland area. http://www.extramsg.com/index.php
  12. Thanks for the tips! If you can think of some downtown spots, it would be much appreciated too!
  13. Hi All, Need some recommendations on kid friendly dinning in the Portland downtown area? Would prefer to stay way from restaurant chains. As well, are there any cool Thai, Vietnamese or Mexican places you'd recommend? A good family pasta joint would be awesome too. Will be in town for a couple of nights next week with the family (1 & 3 year old). They are pretty well behaved for the most parts.... Thanks in advance. Jeff
  14. Thanks everyone. =) Was suppose to read "I am Hungry". Must be the drugs.....LOL 2nd day is much worse, as the swelling has increased. =/ So far I'm on a diet of watermelon juice and soup. Just worried about getting bits stuck in the stiches.... Thanks for all the helpful tips. ` Just wish I can get rid the craving for a nice piece of steak. Best, Owzer
  15. Just had all 4 of my wisdow teeth taken out.... Swelling seems to have gone down. But I have HUNGRY and I do not want any more fruit smoothies, congee or soup. Any helpful hints? Owzer
  16. Or you can use the excess fat to make croutons.....Hmmmmm Wen
  17. Yup. Louie, the GIM mushroom man. Anything fresh that is in season. Most anything dried. Worth a look. Best, Owzer
  18. Oyama's for $4 each. How can you pass that up? Wen
  19. Dragon ball definitely has the best in town, IMHO. Always order the mango without milk. (kind of like a fruit slurpee) With pearls (aka bubbles) only if it is fresh. Otherwise they are tough and chewy.... Best, Owzer
  20. How about ShiruBay ChopStick Cafe in Yaletown. They have a HUGE table that comfortably seats 15. Wen
  21. My wife & I always order crab cakes whenever we visit a new restaurant. Both of us think the best we have ever had was from Fresco's in Kelowna. Best crab cakes. Period. Wen
  22. Brian, Are you refering to the hotdog stand by Mac Cosmetics? If so, I second that! If I am not wrong, they have the largest variety of fixings in town. And fixings is what makes a great dog for me... Wen
