  1. thanks andrew! adding it to my list
  2. thanks katie, we will def have some of the spicy stuff for us but our 4 year old will just have to put up with han's insults lol. from looking at philadining's pics a) it all looks awesome b) son would love those dumplings (i suck the spicy sauce off at szechuan tasty house, so they are a little spicy but he loooves them) and he would love those string beans! can;t wait to try it
  3. probably a dumb question but are there things you can recommend that AREN'T spicy? I would love to try this place but we would take our son who has a pretty big palette but can;t do the spicy, and i think my husband would like one non spicy dish to mix it up as well i've already noted the spicy recommendations - thanks!
  4. ugh i just got there for the first time on my birthday and loved it
  5. it was awesome. the standout was the second course which was a poached lobster with an avocado grapefruit salad. soooooooooo yummy. and they were very kind my husband is allergic to lobster and wnated to do the tasting menu so they did the same sald with a few fried oysters on top which he loved and appreciated! it was the perfect amount of food for me. but my husband definately left a little hungry. i think if we do it again i'll do the tasting and he'll order off the menu. service was a little oddly spaced (some long waits between courses) but we were with friends and didn't mind. plus we sat and finished our wine for quite awhile after we finished dessert and never felt rushed out so that was very nice!
  6. dagordon - question for you - was it too much food? we are going tonite, and i'm afraid if my husband and i both get it we will be flat out stuffed! I am super excited to try it though, it's been far too long since we've been but that's what having a 3 year old does to you
  7. i'm pretty sure they (STH) don't deliver to me (i asked when i was there) at 23rd and mt vernon but i will DEFINATELY check again, gee wouldn't that be a nice surprise! failing that when we do order (which is rare since we found it not as good as chinatown and we found delivery mexican) we do asia on the parkway, square on square or trio (more thai than chinese). all are acceptable to good (light years better than golden chopstick)
  8. meeting my mother in law tomorrow, we are flying to orlando, she is driving from ocala. we are heading to port canaveral but want to meet her for breakfast to drop our son off (she is watching him while we take a weekend cruise). We are renting a car, would like to meet close to the airport but not in (so she can avoid parking and whatnot). Doesn't have to be fabulous or fancy, just close by, easy to find and serving breakfast. ideas? oh yeah we are meeting her tomorrow
  9. normally i would too, except these days i'm usually rushing to pick up a toddler somewhere next year i'll know and plan accordingly, i guess the first year always has a learning curve (i did sneak over to le bus to get day old bread for my stuffing though )
  10. hey to follow up. the turkey was wonderful, i prepared it very simply and it was really juicy and vursting with flavor. the pickup process at godshall's leaves much to be desired (even though you preordered you have to take a number and wait in line, i went tuesday at aroun2:30 and was there for almost an hour), but the turkey was lovely
  11. i wound up ordering at godshall;s cause i wanted a turkey and a breast and they could do both. I have to say the guy who awnsered the phone was a jerk (i had a question or 2 and he was real snippy with me). Hopefully the turkey is good, i pick it up tuesday
  12. thank you! now which type turkey from the farmstand? i will say 5.85 (for the heriatge) seems a bit much per pound for a turkey, but i'm willing to give it a go if it's worth it...
  13. thanks! i should have been more clear that i meant where to buy one (the cooking part i'm cool on), i had a 2 year old pounding on the key board while i was trying to type so the message was brief i'm in town and between work and a 2 year old it has to be close by (ie:reading terminal/south philly etc) mrbigjas - did you have to call to reserve or stop by? do they have turkey breasts as well? i'm haveing approx 20 people and was going to do a medium sized bird and a breast.... thanks for all of your help and suggestions!
  14. hosting thanksgiving this year for both sides of the family and would like to go fresh instead of frozen. suggestions?
  15. we had a nice time. it was 24.95, i wouldn't say it was worth it, meaning no way the 7 of us ate 175$ worth of food or even close. i thought the pastries were just ok. they had the chocolate fountain which was good, and lots of fruit and things to dip, and a gentelman was making fresh filled crepes. All in all i'd say the quality of the desserts was good. The atmosphere is beautiful (esp for us celebrating 2 very special occasions), nice music beautiful room. The value, eh. 25$ is alot for dessert and we each had a drink with it (not included) so all in all it came to 250 + tip for seven people to have desserts and 1 drink, kind of a pricey evening. Nice to try but i don't think i'll rush back
  16. oh well, it's for the best i'm sure there will be tons of feasting at the wedding festivities this weekend, and i still have to get in that bridesmaid dress
  17. I went about three years ago. I thought the view was beautiful. sadly, i don't remember any tastes and flavours, but everything looked very beautiful. and then the aforementioned view. i was as greedy as i could be, but just don't remember much. this is not a good sign. but it was a long time ago. and its kinda chilly, good weather for snarfing up chocolate and pastry....... let us know how it is, i'm curious as might want to revisit. ← I went there about five plus years ago for it. It looked a lot better than it tasted to be honest with you (think more style than substance....) ← ugh bluehens fan that is what i was afraid of. well i will report back either way
  18. Anyone been recently? I did a search and all the posts were 3+ years old. I am going tonite with my whole family to use up some gift certificates purchased by my sister last christmas and to celebrate my other sisters wedding this weekend and her fiance's 30th birthday. Just wanted to know what to expect, how good is it? should i skip dinner? thanks for the help!
  19. sara... we tend to stick to small ethnic joint s (like mexican on washington - garibaldi/veracruzana), chinatown, mikado in cherey hill, some neighborhood places in fairmount (that are pretty family friendly) etc.. aldso anywhere that has outdoor seating out front (not a courtyard) is good cause if we need to let my son stretch his legs we won't bother anyone (ie: sabrina's, radicchio). when my son was that age (he's 17 month and a ball of enrgy now so we are limited to at MOST above) we got to go to a few nicer places cause he slept in his car seat everywhere. But we still stuck to not too fancy or off times (like branzino for an early dinenr, matyson at lunch, etc..). Also i tended to stick to places that had highchairs (i asked when i called because i could rest his car seat in it (when flipped over) and i flet like if they didn't have a highchair they really didn't want kids there. I don't think le bec (or tinto for that matter) would have been wise choices, but i'm sure that some people i nthe restaurants we did frequent probably thought he shouldn't be there (even when he was alseep you will always get one or 2 rude stares). i know greg at rx tells me how family friendly his place is so we've been menaing to get back there once my son decides to sit down for 3 minutes
  20. I just finished 2 "community" sessions at the restaurant school (intro to culinary arts and intermediate culinary arts) and thought it was fantastic. Each session was 6 weeks (mondays nights 7-9:30) and wasn't that basic at all (even the intro course), they also have individual classes. (I'll probably take the advanced cullinary arts but not till it gets a bit cooler ;0) The chef instructor i had was lucia davis, she is/was a food stylist for the food network and a nutritionist. She was very sweet and very informative (and i'm still e-mailing her questions about some of the things we did). She teaches all the "culinary arts" classes as well as the healthy eating courses (and i think a few of the solo classes). here's the link, have fun! http://www.therestaurantschool.com/ (click on community education)
  21. wow thanks for all the links guys! Yes staying right in the town of sonoma at the el dorado, so walking distance for dinner would be fabu! And I'm from philly, and we love to eat alot of good food here (particularly italian), so i can't wait to try some new great things out there!
  22. Hubby and I are going on vacation to those 3 spots the second week in September. spending 3 nights in san fran (and the last full day till 10pm), 4 nights in Sonoma and 2 nights in monterey. Hubby and I like EVERYTHING (he is allergic to shellfish but i still eat it and he adores all other types of fish - that's our ONLY restriction - we love all different nationalities and types of food) Looking from low to upper moderate in pricing (we probably won't be at french laundry but would like a few nice dinners) and it would be great if they had a semi-reasonable wine list (as we are ameteur onephiles and would love to try some new things). Breakfast, lunch, dinner, I would greatly appreciate all of your suggestions. (for b-fast and lunch we are flexible with place but for dinner we'd probably like to right in those 3 towns to limit driving) Thanks in advance!
  23. right here....usually lurking though if you try it, let us know how it is :) (the butter pecan ice cream is pretty yummy)
  24. there is an ice cream place just off of 20th and fairmount (on fairmount - i think it's called philly flavors) that makes there own ice cream (and ain't 1/2 bad) the counter person told me they make their own water ice as well. Never had it, but the ice cream is good, so it might be worth a try.
  25. in the new hope area, i whole heartedly reccomend hamilton's grille room (i'm from the area and unfortunately there are a lot of restaurants, but many are lacking, at least compared to what we have in philly), but this place isn't. and BYOB to boot :) my parents have told me that the logan inn's food is vastly improved, they go often And go to the logan inn or havana to have a drink outside and people watch :) have fun!
