  1. Hopefully this is a temporary thing. This has happened before, also in Georgetown. It makes sense to rob where the money is. My wife and I have changed our walking habits a bit since this is our hood.
  2. That shocked me too, about Charlottesville. It opened during my second go-around in Cville (Darden) and it seemed to be a no-brainer success. Of course Charlottesville has a Spudnuts who speciality is a doughnut covered in ice cream. Now thats a good thing on a hung over AM!
  3. Joe I am not sure where you live your your age demographic but people living in Dupont Circle are very unlikely to drive down Richmond Highway (Groveton is where the old KK is) not to mention even know where that is. Having a doughnut shop like that in Dupont will be a big deal for the locals in Dupont who may be from out of town and never heard of KK before. I must disagree with out in the strongest terms about the quality of KK doughnuts. I think they are the absolute best doughnuts available and are so much better than the junk served at Dunkin'. Their glazed are a wonderous menagerie of sugar, air and pastry, while the 'Kreme' filling is such a refreshing take on the tired custard filling. Also, their coffee is better than most drip brew you get out there today. KK has closed a bunch of underperforming retail locations this year due to their stock taking a hammering. A classic case of over-hype from Wall Street drove the stock way too high and encouraged too-fast growth from management. That, the Atkins craze, and a pending SEC investigation have taking the air out of KK's stock price.
  4. I am not surprised. I assume from the factory on Rt 1? Used to live near there before the sadly built a new one next door. The old place was a classic, with only a diner-type bar where you could eat with a view into the factory. So how are these doughnuts 'hot' if they are trucked in?
  5. What kind of person takes a steak off of someone else's plate, even if they already left? Amazing.
  6. This could be tremendous. I hope she offers cheeses not seen at Dean and Delucca or WF. This would get me across the river no doubt.
  7. Perhaps Le gaulouis although it has changed locations and (sadly) ownership.
  8. Yeah after being called in idiot and having his journalistic credentials questioned he is going to post here?
  9. You mean quality food at reasonably prices? I'm glad to see more Thai in the area, since I'd like some healthy competition for Thaiphoon. (And a closer place that can rival Thai Tanic's quality). In other 18th street topics, has anyone ever been to the Mount Everest restaurant near 18th and S? (Or JoJo's around the corner at like 14th and U)? I can get some cheap gift certificates through restaurant.com and since they're in my hood, I'd like to give them a try if they're any good. I have been to both. Mt Everest is decent Indian. Not at the Heritage India level but very nice. I have not sampled the Nepalian foods beyond the dumplings which were a dissapointment. I have limited experience at JoJo's but my memory of one meal was excellent but inconsistent. They were brand new so I think the kinks have been ironed out.
  10. Why are you so intent on finding malfeasance? Since you have basically accused this writer of fraud, lets see evidence that the message from Albequerque is made up, not to mention the email from Nora. This writer may have made a poor suggestion. But the ire he has drawn from the Beverage managers is a bit above and beyond. This article is not going to start a trend is people expecting free wine unless you let it. Can you chill? The Wash. Post has had a good relationship with the DC board, why not keep it that way?

Being bashed by Fox news made my day, my week! Such an honor! Really, to be on the other side of those nutbags makes me think my initial instincts were right on!
  12. No offense but when hookah bars hit Chantilly the trend is played out. If its authentic you will be smoking shesha in a water pipe and drinking mint tea. They are quite popular in France where I first experienced it. Its quite fun and can be a good conduit for conversation.

Mark (not the columist): That is why I was against the name in the first place. Going to a certain southern school I was a bit shocked at all the outright use of the 'n' word amoung white students (behind the back of others of course). It took me a while to figure out how to respond to these cretins, this was part of my own growing up and development. But I did see that any opportunity to reinforce a sterotype was welcomed by these bigots and lead to more racail name-calling. Now I realize that Ms. Gillian is not responsible for policing the minds of these bigots. But I am sure DaSto is giving plenty of them a good chuckle and that makes me seethe. I don't think Don is going to close your post. This particular discussion long ago crossed over the line of EGullet rules. It now has no relation whatsoever to food, restaurants, etc. If the subject was the election, even if tangentially related to food, it would be long gone I think.

Not to mention that one can lie when registering. While they do require name, address and phone number I doubt its verified. The nice thing about this group is that our fairly frequent meetings provides plenty of opportunity to put a name to a face. Except for Don of course! Edit: From the Site Fourm I see that they do verify.
  15. I hope to make it too. Will try to firm up asap.
  16. Gillian: If you are reading this still I wanted to say that your paragraphs on raising children is an inspiration and excactly what I have been thinking for years. While I do not have children I watch the differences between children eating with the family in France vs. the US and it really explains many of the problems I see in kids today. Regardless, I am now committed to frequenting your restaurant more often.

Good point. This site has very stringent policies. However, Fisher could have read the posts without registering. Don, if he did register, is this something you are comfortable with. Having finally read the 'Chat with the Chef' I strongly do believe the Post article makes her look angry. Her chat shows her as a smart, gracious and committed woman which is clearly what she is. I think the latter is a better one for the public to read.

How does Chef look bad? Yeah, I think the Chef comes off really well. Certain posters look pretty silly, though I n the original thread she came off as thin-skinned, shrill and quite as eager to stereotype as anyone else on the thread. " a bunch of over-educated white people... a small group of snooty white people attempting to be politically correct foodies... Where DOES all this hostility come from anyway? What offends me are people that have never darkened my door, yet see fit to judge me and my store..." Until DonRocks convened the peace parlay I thought she had hurt her case, even though I agreed with her aboujt the name. Playing the race card sucks whoever's doing it. On the other hand, this is all old news. Al Dente this is what I meant. I have not read the other posts yet work has been overwhelming recently. Personally, I was someone regretful of what I said and I tried to make an apology to her. However, to see this in the paper is....well I guess its not exactly what I expected. Of course this site is public but perhaps we get fooled into thinking we are a private group of friends whose exchanges won't be put in the Post! I am expected hate mail any minute (really).

Gillian: Please send my commission checks monthly from the gross receipts of the store. This little post has bought you some incredible publicity. Congrats! PS: We ALL (Chef included) look bad in that article.
  20. Bill, you hit the nail on the head. Thanks Ms. H!

Ms. Clark: With the wisdom of a weekend between me and this post I would like to say good luck with your new store. Yes, the name rubbed me the wrong way but I sincerely hope it suceeds.

Tood, I found your post hard to get though (sort of like your columns [alert: JOKE]). But you make ALOT of assumptions. Are you projecting?

El Jeffe: I am just say one thing about the hostility: Where there is smoke there is fire BABY!
