  1. If one reads Daniel Okrents book about prohibition one would see that he dispells the rumor of the Kennedy family being major bootleggers. He says it is the single biggest myth about prohibition and he spent lots of time investegating it.
  2. And those folks are clearly barbarians who should be held, as your tone suggests, in contempt. I am pretty much stunned by the suggestion that the time folks eat Thanksgiving dinner has deep sociological roots. In most cases I think the time has to do with several things with travel plans and the amount of kids involved being high up on the list. However, what the hell do I know? I'm just an afternoon eatin' rube.
  3. Interesting theory. I'm not sure I get your point. I'm even a little puzzled as to your reason for posting this. You seem inexplicably irritated and annoyed about the time that others choose to have their big holiday meals. It seems pretty straightforward to me. As you say yourself, it's common in American agrarian families to have the largest meal in the middle of the day. It seems to me that this has influenced the timing of this dinner. And, in my experience anyway, it is much more common for large holiday meals to be served "early" in the central parts of the country, which still maintain many customs derived from American agrarian practices. Since I don't come from a tradition that has any connection to this, eating "dinner" in mid-afternoon doesn't make much sense to me. In the spirit of the holiday I say eat whenever you like to. Happy Thanksgiving to all and I will defer my real thoughts on this post
  4. did mine today as well I did roast the turkey backs and the aromatics. It came out nicely and I now have 5 quarts of liquid gold some for Thursday and the rest frozen for later
  5. Yes i amgoing to make gravy. So I like to have stock to do so as the drippings in the pan often don't give me enough as my crowd like gravy, so I will make the stock ahead to have to addd to what I can scrape up from the roasting pan. Roux is what I use to thicken it up.
  6. I got a couble of turkey back yesterday to use for making stock on Sunday so i have it ready for Thanksgiving. What is the word from everyone regarding roasting the turkey and the vegtables before they go into the stock pot? I have done it each way and to tell the truth i don't notice a big difference. What say you?
  7. Bone in yes. It was the best city style ham I have ever had. The ham came from a locally butchered hog.
  8. I'd love to serve around 6pm, but we have folks coming from out of town. So, it will be 3PM so they can eat and relax a bit before departing for home.
  9. I was wondering the same thing. Although I do not have one going for this year it worked great for me
  10. Mu wife has informed me that we will be hosting this year. The last several years we have gone to her sisters house. I would always smoke a turkey and take it along to go with the oven roasted one my BIL did. This worked fine as I love the smoked but my wife does not. She also likes the stuffing done in the turkey and I do not. My problem is that this year I can't do two turkeys. So guess which kind we will be having? I'm debating the family style or the buffet style. The buffet would be a lot eaiser to do at our house. But the family style is tradition. I guess we will see how it works out.
  11. Proving once again that my taste is plebeian, I think Reeses Cups are cool stuff. Of course the ingredients are not top quality, at the price i doubt they could be. Guess I am just some sort of rube.
  12. The OP asked for obsessions. The person you speak of certainly is.
  13. You mean if you go in a place and order a coffee to go it will have milk and sugar in it unless you ask not? I mean that, if you order your coffee "regular," that's what you get. If you state "regular" or if you order a coffee and the server says "Regular?" and you say "Yes," for sure; if you provide no modifier at all and they don't ask, that's what you'll likely get as well. It's the assumed default. I note that because I've been to other places where "regular" meant "black." but my question still is, they put it in BEFORE they hand it to you? Or they give you a creamer and a pack of sugar with it?
  14. You mean if you go in a place and order a coffee to go it will have milk and sugar in it unless you ask not? Around here you get coffee and if they don't have a bar for you to fix it up they give you sugar and one or more of those little creamers. At McDonalds drive through they will put the cream in the coffee for you.
  15. Thanks to all for your replies. we live on a quiet street that is well it and has sidewalks. Every year we see less and less kids. All my neighbors, save one, have the lights on and have treats for the kids. Just seeems that less and less kids are out. At least in our area.
  16. I drink mine black. My wife likes half and half in hers and the only thing about it that I think unique is she puts the half and half in the mug than pours the coffee on top. No stirring necessary that way. I use a presspot at home for our coffee and really like it. Lots of drip I get out is ok, but lots of it sucks.
  17. Tonight I am in charge of handing over the ransom to the little bast... I mean the little darlings when they pound on the door. Actually, I very much enjoy seeing the kids out in their costumes. It always makes me smile to see them. I give them what they want. CANDY!!! And the name brand stuff too. Nothing healthy or wholesome hits their sack from my hand. How about everyone else? Anyone make stuff to give them? Any of those hated people who give out apples or grapes or something? The other year some of the kids came by and said the lady down the street was giving out little bags of broccoli. I could not believe it. Broccoli?? Give me a break. She is lucky they did not burn her house down
  18. I've always leaned to the citrus twist. Cucumber is fine as well. I have never cared for olives in martinis. I think this came from having too many from that gallon size jar of olives that some bars have that has been sitting on a shelf for a year or so. And as discussed on another topic I guess my preference in gin leans towards the citrus as opposed to the juniper. And I won't restart that discussion, I promise
  19. What is the attraction of the products offered by the Amish vendors? I live in lancaster County and I can tell you that the growing process of the Amish is not in any way superior to any small local farm. In particular any animal products. There is nothing wrong with their stuff. But it is no better than that offered by many non-Amish vewndors. Do people think that what they offer is of a higher quality or better some how? When I visit the RTM I observe the Amish run baked goods stand and always say to myself, Whats up with that? Nothing special there at all. I guess in the city the Amish are seen as something special. Where I live, they are just like everybody else. Trying to make a buck or two.
  20. Thw Wild Turkey remains my standard everyday rye. When i travel to Maryland I always pick up a bottle of Pikesville which I find to be my favorite rye. I love the Rittenhouse but it is not an easy thing for me to get. Again, I think the Wild Turkey is widely available and offers good value for the price paid. I enjoy it in my Manhattans
  21. If one searches the internet one could find places were KA mixers with non-standard attachments are used. These uses are not really of a culinary nature, however.
  22. When I was growing up we did not have much variety at our home. It was healthy cooked meals, but not much variety. As I got the opportunity to try various other types of flavors and textures in food I was thrilled. There was nothing I would not try. There were some thing I did not like but bring it on, offal, stinky cheese, whatever you had. And the heat! Loved the heat in foods. Now as I get older, I seem to be regressing. If I see something on a menu I have not had, chances are I will go the other way. Give me the meatloaf and mac and cheese. The same seems to be true with wine. There are a few I like but just don't care to try new things. Is this a sign I am just turning into an old fuddy duddy? Are these changes physiological or psychological? Can anyone else relate to this?
