I only have OO in my house. For every day use I have Trader Giotto's EVOO. The good oil I am using right now is an organic olive oil called Olio Beato.

Is there a new meat market on Rt. 16?

Has anyone tried the gourmet food store at Amazon?

If any of the girls are doing the lowcarb diets the jello might be a big hit. I like the idea of donating it better though. Will you keep us posted on how the job is going? I feel like we have a spy on the inside! How many meals a week do you have to prepare?

Do people go just for the food? I would walk around in the cold for the food. Although maybe not this weekend.

With all due respect Joe, when your six and just walked about a mile and a half for some ice cream, it has the perfect personality

I don't know if there is an advantage since I have never used a mesh skimmer. (the one I pictured was a gift from a noncook). I have used it a few times and it works very well.

What do you have simmering on Sunday that tastes good all weekend long? With this cold rut the most country seems to be stuck in I have started craving stews, lentil soups, braised beef, etc. I need ideas, recipes, inspiration. I found nothing that looked good after researching ideas from the Cold weather food thread. Help! It sounds like many of you are eating very well and I want to join you. I am looking for great, rib sticking recipes that do not involve alcohol and take a few hours to cook. Thanks

I went so many circuits of Costco with a NZ lamb demonstration going on that I'm pretty certain the security was summoned. It was THAT good. But Costco is definitely the undisputed ruler for sampling here. I was once asked "to remember that others would like to smaple the lamb as well" Trying the free samples at WF makes a great snack. A few peices of cheese, some bread with butter, a few pieces of fruit and I am set until dinner.

I thought it tasted like cranberry juice, until I added some vanilla Stoli and Sprite. Diluting POM brings out the flavors for me.

I like mine with chambord

I grew up eating it on thick rye bread.

You must have served me ice cream. That's too funny. We used to walk all the way over from the SE/SW freeway. I always got milkshakes. I only went to Steve's once or twice. I liked watching them do the blend ins.

That is so sad. I loved their food. I was pumping gas at the station down the street one day when I followed the aroma into the restaurant. This was the only place I had found for southern food and it was take out

I forgot to tell you that I bought my calanders last week. I struck gold with a small Harry Potter for the classroom and sunflowers, which is one of my faovrite flowers. The kids are pissed because the big one came with stickers, but after three years of Harry, I needed a smaller version of that actor's head staring at me all day long.

Jenny, it pains me to say this, but I don't get Matchbox. Gratned, I haven't had the cheeseburgers (must try cheeseburgers, must try cheeseburgers) but the pizza wasn't that special. I went over the summer and I got the mushroom pizza. I don't know, I guess I am missing something. I have the same one in black!!!! It came out during New Years and been out since. I love that jacket. Right now it is my favorite piece of clothing. What ever is under the coat is perfectly warm. Keep in mind that I am only five foot two, so I am covered from my ankles to my neck. It has a hood that I am going home to to get from my parent's house tomorrow. My mother loves that I finally admitting to needing the hood. Grandma's hand knit hat was great, but this weather has gone on for too long now. This kind of thing happened to my sister and I all over Europe. Since we were from DC people thought we were interesting. They did not believe that we actually grew up on Capitol Hill

Welcome Jessker. Which Bob's did you work at?

Does anyone know if/when Carolina Kitchen is planning to reopen?

Pan, it's about 17 now. Hard to complain when there are places right now where this is warm! I was very bummed about the snow though. We didn't get a flake! Jenny, have you thought about taking classes at L'Acdemie De Cuisine? They are metro accessible and have one timers. There is a knife skills workshop that is suppose to be great. Otherwise, go with Roberto at Galileo. He is a complete charmer. In the early nineties I went to a lot of those charity events where they raise money buy getting a lot of fancy chefs to cook at one time in one place so you can gorge yourself. (Zoofair, held across the street from the Zoo bar, is my favorite.) By the third or fourth he recognized me!

When we cleaned out my grandmother's apartment a few years ago we found a box full She became angry when we refused to donate them to Goodwill. They were recycled instead.

Thanks so much butterfly! It's good to hear from you. No need to apologize, I always like to have a few "cheap eats" in mind. I hope to make use of your info. How is the food at Santa Rosa? It is one of those places I have always wanted to try but end up somewhere else.

Favorites and "not so"
hillvalley replied to a topic in eGullet Q&A with NASA Food Scientist Vickie Kloeris
I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. Over the years different eating trends have come and gone. The current no/low carb is an example. Also, American's have become more adventurous eaters in the last 50 years or so. Sushi, burritos and hummus are regular parts of our diet. How have these changes impacted food prep at NASA? By the way, congrats on the success of the Mars rover. The pictures are very exciting. -
Morella, I had to get a tetnus shot a few years ago. I can only imagine how awful that must have been at 5! The Roy Rogers (where I spent a good deal of time way back when) is now a McD's and the Swensons is now a Ruby Tuesdays. We always went to the Swensons in Georgetown. It is where I learned to love french onion soup. Shakey's! Yes, it was a Shakey's on Wisc. in Bethesda. Across from the Hot Shoppes that became the American City Diner that became an office building. Was their pizza square? For some reason I have square pizza associated with Shakey's, but I could be wrong.

I was five or six when I first dined at Dominic's. It was the very early 80's. I now know that my father had impressed some clients and they said take your family out to dinner. My parent's had waited for the right opportunity to introduce their already a food snob daughter to the world of fine dining. And they did it on a school night! It was fabulous. The hostest (Diane, I think) was the most beautiful person I had ever seen. She wore bright red lipstick and a black dress. At least in my memory anyway. And she spoke French. Did I mention that I was obsessed with the French in my childhood? I had steak. All I remember was thinking how big it was. I was a tiny kid, and it was was a big piece of meat. And the potatos. It was a whole new world after that night.

Right now it seems to be chicken soup. I am averaging a pot every week and a half. My long term ones are natto and black olives.
