  1. Ok, that is one of the silliest things I have ever heard. So you mean even though a place has more than one outlet, if they "care" they are NOT A CHAIN?? What is you definition of "care"?
  2. I am originally from Toledo, OH where there is a complete smoking ban in all public facilities including bars, restaurants, and bowling alleys. This ban was enacted early last year and since then there has been a documented exodus of customers to the bars outside of Toledo, especially to South East Michigan. Many small watering holes have closed down and still many others are having financial difficulty. MInd you, Toledo is a completely blue collar town with lots of smokers. I am not saying that the same thing would happen here, however I am saying that the smokers are going to smoke and drink someplace, and here that place may be VA. I too favor a ban (even though I am a social smoker) simply for the reason that it harms workers to are continually exposed to smoke day in and day out.
  3. I have to agree: If you like bad service, overpriced for what it is food, and sushi that I am scared to eat then by all means have at it.
  4. I confess: I have never had nutella. Not a staple of the table growing up in NW Ohio. I ate skippy and grape jelly sandwiches, thank you very much.
  5. What is actually in this stuff? What are the ingrediants?
  6. I cannot even muster a single sip of this stuff. Waaaaaay too bitter.
  7. I like that there is no sign. Kind of like the 18th street lounge. Makes me feel like I am one of the people, "in the know".
  8. My man and I went to Bourbon in Glover Park last night for a few drinks. I had a remarkable Basil Hayden manhattan on the rocks with just the right amount of vermouth and he had a 10 year old Evan Williams on the rocks that he said was, "yummy". The place serves food as well with many of the dishes using bourbon as an ingredient. Just wondering what you all thought of the place. I have not tried the food, but they have a huge list of bourbons and TN whiskies as well as an extensive beer list. It is one of those places that you wouldn't know exists because there is no sign out front. However, it is next door to Heritage India. Anyone else tried this joint?
  9. Deep fried Ho-Ho's and Ring Dings. heaven
  10. I went to the Brickskeller for a recent birthday and that was pretty cool.
  11. I second the Harris Teeter. I think that they have a fairly respectable deli and you can buy wine there. Also, it is next to World Market which has a great food/wine/coffee selection.
  12. I'm sorry danzig, I seem to be reading a different thread, and for that matter a different forum than you are. Yeah, there are a few posts pointing towards happy hours, but I see just as many suggestions for good deals outside happy hour. What happens in your critique of us "hipster/foodies" when the happy hour/special deal is at a local place? Should we all wait until the deal is over to have the priviledge of paying full price? Does your prejudice against bargain hunting extend to bar menus? Just getting apps at the bar? While some people here have the cash to eat off the regular menus at places like Citronelle (to use an extreme example) some of us don't. The bar menu is the only way any time soon that I'll be able to afford to try the creations of Chef Michel. For those of us whose gastronomical addictions outpace our wallet contents this is the way to eat from excellent kitchens without breaking the bank. Too, if you look around at other recent threads, you will see a large amount of posts looking for that hidden "local" gem (see, for example, the stripmall thread). Everyone's entitled to air their opinions, I just happen to not really see a firm foundation for yours. Right on.
  13. I for one adore Pirmanti's, but I have to say for really good drunk food you have to go to the Original in Oakland and get a "bag o fries" with a tub of ketchup and have one of those big greeeeeeasy hoagies. I used to go there after hanging out in the Southside, around 4am. The place was always packed.
  14. Former P-Burgh resident here. I would second the recommedation of Kaya. I am not a vegitarian, but I always thought that the menu was inventive and tasty. I always liked the Church Brew Works. Is that place still around? It used to be near the Strip District, cross from the Iron Shitty brewery. I also think that you can have a wonderful meal up in Mt. Washington at the Tin Angel (I think that is what it is called), right on Grandview.
  15. I like the eggs benedict at Clydes in Georgetown. Not too expensive.
  16. Just wanted to pass on that I think the crowds have subsided. I was at Wegmans on Sunday afternoon and it was not crowded at all, barring the prepared food section which was a little crazy.
  17. Anyone know if the patio at Poste has opened yet?
  18. Not really in the same area, but in my hood (Woodley Park), the old Washington Park Gourmet on Calvert by the Omni Shoreham is going to be opening up this summer as a new Tryst. Tryst in my opinion is the best coffee house in DC (which in case you are not familiar is on 18th in Adams Morgan)and I am so freaking excited that there is going to be one in my backyard!
  19. I like Bistro Du Coin when it is nice outside and they open up the big door in the front. They have some great lunch specials on the weekends if I recall correctly
