And I do note, Rachel, that you aren't necessarily saying that he is affiliated with the place, just that if he was there would be nothing wrong with that. Exactly.

jhlurie amply defended my post already (and correctly pointed out that I was saying it SK's post was appropriate), so the only comment I'd like to add is that your quoting the words "out of line" make it sound as if I said those words (and you were quoting me) which isn't the case. Do a quick search of this thread and you will find that Nutley Resident is the first to use those words in this thread. Please try not to put words in other's mouths. And, like viejo majadero mentioned, we don't mind people with restaurant affiliations tauting their places, however we do request disclosure if that is the case. Thanks for your participation on eGullet.

Actually, since you claim that "The Petite Cafe is one of the finest, if not THE finest little "gem" in (Nutley)" and ask "does anyone else agree?" It is perfectly appropriate for someone else to respond that they have other places they consider "gems" in Nutley.

I'll allow the post to remain here if you agree to copy it over to an appropriate thread on the NY forum.

What is your favorite Vietnamese rest. in NJ?
Rachel Perlow replied to a topic in New Jersey: Dining
There have actually been several threads about Vietnamese restaurants in NJ already. Perhaps you would care to continue the discussion on one of these: Vietnamese Restaurants in NJ, much discussion of Little Saigon in Nutley, a couple of Jersey City places and a place in Atlantic City. Kim's compiling the numbers, tommy. Kim? JIC, for Jason & Rachel: Sat 31: yes Sun 1: yes Sat 7: yes Sun 8: no Rosie & Lowell are only available on the 8th. If it ends up being the 8th, Jason and I might stop by to say Hi after a big family party in Brooklyn, but I doubt we'll be ready for a Chinese banquet.
-
Just found out, we can't do the 8th. Heh, we could always have two smaller dinners. There's no need to pre-order a banquet if it's under 15 or so people.
-
Since you don't have a stove to practice with, maybe you could practice shelling the fava beans over the weekend?
-
Heard from Rosie, they can only do the 8th.

I was listening to Food Talk with Arthur Schwartz yesterday and heard about watermelon ice cream from his guest's cookbook. Joyce White was discussing her new book, Brown Sugar : Soul Food Desserts from Family and Friends, which includes this recipe. She was very clear that it was an ice cream and not a sorbet or sherbet. I don't have the exact recipe, but she says she takes 6 pounds of watermelon flesh, purees it, half gets reduced to a syrup and is used to flavor the cream base and the other half gets mixed in to add a fresh watermelon flavor. She says it is very similar to other fruit based Philadelphia style ice creams, but this is one I'll have to try to believe it works. If anyone has an actual recipe for this, I'd love to have it.

Dog? Garbage disposal? Neighbor's garbage can? Shovel?

s'kat- I checked out your website, and if that's you and your hubby in the June Wedding photos, anyone who wears a fluorescent, ultrasheen jacket should be suspicious of no one!!! [off-topic] The blue coordinated outfits weren't bad, but him in the orange-yellow swirly jacket while she's in that red-peach-mauve, equally swirly number, now that's dizzifyingly clashy! Beautiful wedding dress though. [/off-topic]

Yeah, we went to Stancato's a few times when we first moved to the area, and were usually underwhelmed, and the restaurant was never busy. After we discovered a few other Italian places we liked better we never returned.
-
Wait, June 7th is a Saturday, I thought we were doing June 8th of that weekend? Rachel & Jason have no life and are available all three dates.
-
Welcome to eGullet, GoodEater! I'm curious, have you ever been to Kinchley's and if so, how do you compare it to the places you mention above?
-
Well, since we live in the area, and we can make both the 31st and the June 8th, we can always do both dates. Sorry, I guess we can't please everyone.
-
I didn't even know that Stancato had closed. I called and indeed their number has been disconnected. We recently tried Max's in Tenafly and it is very good.

I make that spicy beef salad from Hot Salty Sour Sweet so often that the book opens to that page automatically. It's great for using up any left over bits of meat.

Current RSVP list seems to be: 201 =Mark tommy (mrs?) glenn Double 0 (guests, mrs?) jhlurie Perlows Join us and show support for a place that does good food right.

Let's go with the 31st. Rosie hasn't responded to my email yet (to be fair she may be out in the real outback and incomunicado), but probably wouldn't have been able to make that whole weekend anyway (just getting back from Australia and all), so since many want a Saturday, let's just plan for that date. Youse got any problem wit dat? PS - my god, tommy's over 10000 posts.
-
Saturday, May 31st?

Another reason to buy American. I just replaced a headlamp and a couple bulbs on our old Caddy. Bill was $30. I've emailed Rosie and asked her when she's getting home and if she can make either date. For the people who have already responded, is June 1 good for you too?
-
Sorry =Mark, the following week is Father's Day and we'd like to do this as soon as possible. I figured June 1 is too short notice for people. Yes/No?

As discussed on another thread, we are having an emergency NJ eGullet Dinner on Sunday June 8th, to support and hopefully promote China 46.* After they were reviewed by the New York Times ("Very Good" by David Corcoran, 12/30/01) and the Bergen Record (3 1/2 diamonds by Rene A. Mack, 3/8/02), the restaurant became very popular, and we frequently had to wait for a weekend table. We expected the crowds to die down eventually, but the sudden and dramatic downturn in business over the past few months can only be attributed to the SARS publicity. No menu planned yet, but figure about $40 per person for a great banquet. Everyone should BYOB what they want to drink and share. RSVP by June 1, please (yes, I know, redundant). *We may have another one at Hunan Cottage (Fairfield) in the near future too, as they are also very good and possibly in need of support as well.

I'm starting a new topic and will move the RSVP's above there in a few minutes. And I'm making it 6 PM so Paul and Dee won't be late.
