Hi y'all. I was watching a movie yesterday about a first generation Chinese girl (Double Happiness i believe it was called?) well in any case, it dawned on em as i was watching that everyone was using chopsticks with their right hand. I'm left-handed and Indian, but I have been using chopsticks since i was old enough to manipulate them. Indians have strong taboos on left and right handedness, but thankfully my folks threw most of the taboos out of the window when we came to the US, and let me be just as I am with my hand preference (except for which hand i use to put food in my mouth, and to give things to others). in any case - am i committing a complete blasphepy using chopsticks with my left-hand? I'm not very coordinated at all with my right hand, but I certainly wouldn't want to offend whilst eating out, or in the company of other people. thanks!

i went to Adelphi out on Long Island - the food was not memorable, obviously. i seem to remember living on breakfast - the best meal of the day, and a fabulous reuben they used to have. also chicken cutlet on a roll - something a junior i started chatting with during my first visit prior to attending told me to always remember. it was also my first exposure to black bean soup, which scared the hell otu of me, never having laid eyes on black beans ever in my life. it looked like the labrea tarpits to me. to this day i have never had black bean anything. another thing abotu the food - i don't know what the deal was, but it seemed like within an hour of eating the cafeterias meals (outside of breakfast) i wound up being forced to nap for about 2 hours. i'm not sure why as i've never been a napper. i was thrilled to move into my off-campus apartment and enjoy trhe splendors of customizing ramen noodels and lipton pasta and sauce, or rice and sauce dishes. joy.

hmm..i'm kinda lucky cuz my favorite grocery store has imported chocolate from all over the place - including british cadbury, so i get all the flakes i want! my favorites tho, would have to be fruit and nuts, creme eggs, lindt strawberry, and milky ways. i'm trying to track down my indian favorite - i thought it was made by cadbury, and really it's a sweet, not a candy bar - lactobonbons. was this a figment of my imagination, or did they really exist? also on that aussie site - if you do a searhc for chocolate packs, they do have a box of 15 violet crumbles all by themselves.

oscar meyer cheese dogs (the kind with the little gobs of cheesefood interspersed) nuked til it's almsot hard (on purpose) and dipped directly into frank's red hot sauce. have loved it since i was a kid. and it only got better when i realized the damage i could do to the dog by nuking it.

where is "here"? brewers yeast on popcorn? what an intriguing idea....i know nothing of it - altho it is an acquired taste - i usually just mix it with some juice or water and gulp it down. i have ruined a smoothie or two by addign it in, so i don't anymore. i can definitely melding better with savory then sweet.

yeah i've never heard rasbhari, but then again i'm south indian, so perhaps it is a difference in langugage. it was always either nellikai or gooseberry, and we typicaly used it to make juice from - or eat raw. also made into pickles if memory serves. so perhaps it's a regional difference, or familial for that matter.

well, i'm kind of in a unique situation as i have a fairly strict diet that i stick to day in and day out. it makes it difficult for me to eat out, so i prepare food for myself, almost allthe time. typically what i will do is cook a large meal for luncha nd an entirely different mealf or dinner on the weekend and split it up into tupperware to eat throughout the week. this way i know exactly where the food is coming from, what's in it, and the macronutrients. that being said, i LOVE experimenting and trying new things, so I look forward to menu planning and hoping it turns out well. a pelasant side effect has been that i save lots of money eating this way. I do this for 4 days out fo the week, and then friday i typically have a cheat day and eat out for both luncha nd dinner - this allows me to incorporate my social life as well. all bets are off on weekends - i'll eat whatever i feel like then, and it's very rarely home-cooked. when it coems to eating it, it's usually right out of the tupperware, whilst catching up on ttv, before headign directly to bed.

fresh coconut juice doesn't leave you thirsty for water either.

wow - yeah this has become a recent (in the last year or so) trend her ein Atlanta - it started with one restaurant down the street from me, and now it seems like most of the major neighborhood indian places offer chinese as well. actually here's a writeup on the place down the street form me: http://www.ajc.com/living/content/living/d...2/18daabha.html i haven't tried any of the chinese offerings yet as they are all unfamiliar to me, but i have tired their chicken makhni.

Phyllantus Acidus is what we call "aamloki" in Bengali. Extremely tart. Bengalis usually have them in a dried form (cut into wedges and then dried). The dried form looks black or very dark brown. Helps in digestion, I am told. I didn't realize they were called "gooseberries"...
-
nope.....we called them nellikai - looked like little yellow pumpkins....amla i guess is another word for it? here's an artisitic representation.... http://www.tropilab.com/phyllantus-acidus.html

hee - another reason as well cuz there's no way i'm spending 4 bucks of my own money on coffee, i don't care how fancy your sizing language is.

don't ever get the 3-way via drive-thru at 4am. i was tipsy and still had difficulty working my way thru half of it. and it smelled ghastly the next morning. the 5-way eating in isn't bad at all tho.

i do always feel funny ordering. especially when beforehand my coffee order used to be "coffee regular, please."

definitely lychees, rainier cherries, and cherimoyas. ooh and scuppernongs and muscadines which are in season as of 2 weeks ago.

i'm actually sorta thankful for starbucks. when i'm traveling and staying in strange cities with pallid complimentary hotel coffee, i'm always glad there's a starbucks nearby, no matter where, so that i can get some coffee that can actually help me join the living. this does not apply to NYC or NO visits, however. fabulous coffee to be had in those 2 cities.

i was going to mention nimboo pani actually - also one with gooseberry juice -but i've never seen those gooseberries here. sugar cane juice is an easy one to find in NYC, as well.
-
lassi! it's a yogurt drink usually either blended with salt or sugar or mango pulp.
-
mmm....chestnuts.

that's exactly what i do! 10oz soy milk +4 oz apple or orange depending on the fruit - it makes a nice creamy smoothie without having to add sorbets or yogurt. the biggest problem i find is that usin just soy you wind up with this bland not quite sweet not quite anything taste on the back end. just seems sort of blunted. the apple or orange juice or adding some pinapple to the mix solves that problem.
-
vanilla, raspberries and mint. you could also mess around with apple juice as a base. soba - pineapples are the best fruit for smoothies imo - they add thickness, plus just that hint of tartness ont he back end when you ened it.
-
are you trying to do strictly fruits and peppermint or chocolate or vanilla as well?

what kind of squash?
