    Dinner 2024

The recipe was meant to be served in hollowed out bread, just as you say. We did not have any bread in the house, no one felt like going to the store, and I did not feel like baking. So I guess it could maybe be called bunny chow filling? 🙂

Sunday was pasta night. I made a zucchini, garlic scape, and spinach pesto for myself, my niece and my sister My nephew cooked a spicy sausage pasta for himself and my husband. Yesterday was a very yellow dinner. Crunchy haddock with mango salsa, curried rice with raisins and carrots, and zucchini/summer squash

    Dinner 2024

Nephew cooked again last night since I am battling a summer cold. He made bunny chow in two versions, one with beef and the other with roasted cauliflower. This is the roasted cauliflower one. He also made chapatis and South African yellow rice. He hasn't offered to cook tonight yet, so I think I am back in the kitchen starting today...

Rice noodle salad bowl from Andrea Nguyen's Vietnamese Food Any Day. The protein on top is chicken thigh.
  11. I am having the same issue with my ooni. The top of the pizza is perfect. The bottom crust needs to be crisper for my liking. I will try waiting longer to rotate it next time. I do have the ooni peel, and have no issue launching the pizzas from it, or using it to rotate them once they are in the oven.

    Dinner 2024

Sunday night niece and nephew chose the menu. Nephew grilled chicken kebabs with peppers and onions (and a porterhouse steak, not pictured), niece made macaroni and cheese, and I tossed some broccoli in Monday was pasta night. Husband, sister and I had eggplant involtini with arugula salad Niece had beet gnocchi with roasted beet sauce, spinach, toasted pine nuts and browned butter. The gnocchi and beet sauce were already made and pulled from the freezer to quickly pan saute, so that was easy enough Nephew had a baked ravioli and chicken casserole, and I also baked a loaf of focaccia, but I did not get pictures of those.

    Dinner 2024

Catching up after a weekend away. Monday was swordfish fra diavolo. It needed something green but I had not gotten a grocery delivery yet. Tuesday (post grocery delivery) we had sesame tuna and veggie fried rice. I shredded the last lingering cabbage I had remaining from the winter CSA, roasted it, and mixed it in with the rice about 50/50. No complaints from the table so I will take it as a win. Last night, continuing my quest to clear out the winter storage root vegetables, we had a Madras curry with roasted Macomber turnip as the main component. My nephew was out for dinner last night or he would have objected to this meal, but everyone that was home enjoyed it. Only three more turnips (about 5 pounds worth) to go!
  16. I would say that the non fried squid was more tender. We all liked it a lot. I have a hard time sourcing good calamari near me, but would like to try and replicate it at home some time. I was hoping to get some at the fish market we stopped at on the way off the Cape yesterday, but they didn't have any. Here's another photo that explains why stuff tends to wash up in front of the house. This is at rising tide. The water washes in and creates a river of sorts in front of the house. The water runs in to the marshlands located on the right of the house. Depending on the time of year, the water can be quite deep. We've been here during a king tide, which only happens a few times a year. At that time, the water comes all the way up to the top of the barrier wall and poles you can see in the photo. Sunday we decided to try and go to the Beachcomber. We figured since it was not high season yet, we might be able to get parking. It is almost impossible to get a spot in the summer. Sure enough, we lucked out. Menus Niece wanted mozzarella sticks Nephew could not have any of the appetizers today. Sometimes he can, depending on what's on the specials menu and how many people they have working. Not today. He was able to have the french fries though, since they cook them in a dedicated fryer to accommodate gluten allergies. So, he was happy about that. He also got an oven baked quesadilla. They basically told him it was that or a salad. Luckily, he's used to it. We were going to get raw oysters but skipped them once they told nephew he could not eat them due to potential contamination from peel and eat shrimp on the same station. Instead, we picked stuff he does not like. Steamer clams Garlic steamed littlenecks Niece had a steak sandwich Husband got oyster tacos Sister and husband's brother both got an oyster po boy and I had a fried cod sandwich Husband's brother went home Sunday after dinner, and my sister, niece and nephew went straight home yesterday morning. My husband and I took a more leisurely route, stopping in Chatham on the way home for lunch. Lighthouse beach Mac's Chatham Fish and Lobster Husband got a lobster roll and I had a shrimp caesar salad That's it for this visit. We'll be back soon enough, when it will be a lot more crowded!
  17. Here's another picture of the house we are renting. It's really great. However, renting a house on the harbor comes with interesting risks. Here's what is in front of the house right now. Under that mound a sand is a large, dead, decaying seal. We have to go out after every high tide and cover it up again because it smells horrible. It's too big and heavy to move, but if you cover it with sand the smell goes away. We have arrived to find dolphin carcasses stranded in front of the house before and those are small enough to drag out into the ocean. There was a whale stranding in the harbor a couple of years ago, but thankfully we were not here for that one. We have also been here for live strandings and rescues. There's a team in town dedicated to conducting the rescues of stranded marine animals, and they have a pretty good success rate. Back to food. Last night we went in to Truro for dinner at Blackfish. Menu Cocktails We got some appetizers to share. Fried oysters A special of salt and pepper squid with chili sauce and beans pork belly Nephew had a burger Niece chose the short ribs I had a special of scallops with pumpkin and harukei turnips Sister and brother's husband each had the tuna bolognese and husband had the lobster gnocchi We shared two desserts. Chocolate tart with salted pretzel crust Lemon panna cotta After dinner we went for a walk on the beach for sunset
  18. We are in Wellfleet for the weekend, staying at the old house on the beach I have written about here before. It is beautiful, sunny and in the 70s, and is supposed to stay that way all weekend. I've already walked 10 miles on the beach today. Last night we had to have dinner at Mac's Shack of course, it is tradition. Oysters My nephew opted for an appetizer of stewed calamari puttanesca style. Niece wanted the spicy tuna mango martini app. Everything was shared My nephew and husband's brother got Ritz cracker crusted bluefish with creamed spinach and mashed potatoes Sister had green curry scallops Niece had her two favorite sushi rolls and my husband and I both had a special of bacon stuffed roasted halibut with roasted carrots. It was delicious. Mac's doesn't really do desserts, but here's a strawberry tart I picked up for my nephew at PB Boulangerie bakery

I found it replicated on the Food 52 site. Here: https://food52.com/recipes/84238-vegetarian-laksa-recipe-with-rutabaga The main difference is that the Macomber turnip took longer to get browned than the original recipe. That was fine, I just keep it roasting until it looked good. I think I would have preferred rice to the rice noodles, but that's just me.

  22. Yes, that's right, warm seared goat cheese. Sorry for the delayed reply!
  23. Our last day of the visit was spent doing more of the same. Snorkeling of course! A couple of pictures: we found the school of blue tang again Puddingwife Honeycomb cowfish For dinner, we took the boat over to St. John and had dinner at La Tapa. Menu I started with the goat cheese salad and husband had the mozzarella Then I had the tuna. I seem to get this every time And husband had the shrimp and langoustine pasta We split the pineapple for dessert. Sunset from our table And that's it for this visit to St. John. See you on the dinner thread.
  24. I went in an ambulance, so no choice. I have an exciting medical life haha. I seem to be fine now and will follow up with my care team once I am home. And yes, that is the Lady Lynsey out of the Ritz Carlton on St. Thomas! Lovango is a pleasant sailing distance from where the Ritz is located on St. Thomas. They do sailing excursions to St. John for dinner as well, though I am not sure if that is a coordinated thing with a particular restaurant or just a shuttle service to get people over to the town. We spent the day snorkeling at the two swimming areas on Lovango. The front of the island doesn't have a beach per se, you get into the water from a dock. The back of the island has a rocky beach. We spent today at the rocky beach, called Crescent. Here are some pictures. It's pretty rare that anyone else from the resort comes by when we are there. Once you are finished, you text them and they come get you in a golf cart. You can walk back up too, if you want to....but why? Here are some underwater sights. Trio of permits Corals Dog snapper Blue Tang For dinner we ate at the resort. View Specials Menu Husband got the tuna noodle appetizer Followed by the lobster schnitzel I had the special tomato salad and the shiitake tortelloni We shared some mint ice cream for dessert.
  25. Friday we did not have diner because I ended up having to go to the hospital equivalent on island. I'm fine now. Saturday was our day to transfer from the house we were renting over to Lovango Cay. This time, we rented a "treehouse" instead of a glamping tent. The treehouses have air conditioning of a sort. It can only work so well because the slots in the floor are open slats. Here are some pictures. We hung out by the pool while waiting for our cabin to be ready. They upgraded us to a pool cabana and comped a bottle of some sparkling wine that my husband had a glass of. Dinner was at the Sandpit. There's live music and various other entertainment, but we were pretty tired, so just had dinner and were shortly asleep. Menu Tuna nicoise (I really liked the pickled okra) Lobster pizza
