New fossil evidence shows that prehistoric people throughout the New World were cultivating a wide variety of chilies. The earliest traces so far have been found in Ecuador and date back about 6,500 years. The discovery, reported in the latest issue of Science, suggests that early New World agriculture was more sophisticated than once thought.
